Record-setting year for named storms saw increased claims

2020 Hurricane Season Exceeds $1.9 Billion in Claims Paid

Last year saw a historic hurricane season with 30 named storms, 12 of which made landfall in the continental US, breaking the record of 28 named storms in 2005. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 thru November 30. However, the 2020 season began with Tropical Storm Arthur on May 16 - a full two weeks early.

To put it in perspective, in 2019 State Farm received around 6,000 claims from named storms, totaling approximately $26 million. In 2020, claims filed neared 163,000 and exceeded $1.9 billion in cost.
