Be Wary When Walking
Walking is free, easy and a great way to get from one place to another. Yet walking, whether to school or for exercise, isn’t without its risks. Consider these statistics:
- An estimated 6,200 pedestrians were killed in 2018, an increase of 250 from 2017.
- Pedestrian fatalities in the U.S. have increased 41 percent since 2008, accounting for 16 percent of all traffic fatalities.
- 60 percent of people texting while walking veered off course, according to a study by New York’s Stony Brook University.
