Tricksters can take the treat out of Halloween as vandalism spikes on Oct. 31 compared to the rest of the Fall month. Based on its 2024 auto claims data, State Farm saw an average of almost 27% more auto vandalism claims across the country on Halloween compared to the rest of October last year. Knowing that some characters walking the streets will not be looking for treats, here are some practical ways to help reduce your chances of living through a nightmare this Halloween season that could end up costing you money.

Tips to Help Protect Your Home

Keep your home brightly lit indoors and outside.
Consider setting up a home security system with cameras. You might even qualify for discounts on your homeowners insurance.
Try to keep shrubs and bushes trimmed so burglars have fewer places to hide.
Clear debris and other obstacles from your lawn, sidewalks and steps.

Tips to Help Protect Your Car

Park in a garage. If you don't have a garage, consider using motion lights that can help deter vandals and alert you or your neighbors of activity.
When you're away from home, park in a well-lit, populated area — preferably a gated lot or secure parking garage.
For added protection, park in a spot away from objects that might conceal vandals, such as large vehicles, dumpsters or shrubbery.

There is some good news regarding your vehicle depending on your coverage. According to State Farm, vandalism on a vehicle would be covered under your auto insurance policy’s Comprehensive Coverage. This coverage would apply to losses caused by theft or damage from a break-in, fire, glass damage, falling objects and other non-collision-related damage.

Things to Consider before Halloween

Eliminate temptations by removing valuables from your vehicle.
Bumper stickers may also tempt vandals. If someone doesn't agree with your expressed views, you could become the target of vandalism.
Consider adding an alarm system and/or surveillance cameras to your car to help make it a less desirable target. Sometimes, simply having a security system decal is enough.
Also remember to close your car windows and lock the car, even when you park at home.

Tips to Keep Trick or Treating Safe

According to Safe Kids Worldwide, children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than on any other day of the year. Here are some things to consider before heading out on foot Halloween night.

If you're going door-to-door

Always accompany young children.
Exercise great caution during the "scariest" hours - between 5 and 9 pm. It is especially dangerous for pedestrian accidents between 6 and 7 pm.
Stick to neighborhoods with sidewalks. If you must walk on the street, keep to the far left, facing traffic.
Practice safe crossing procedures - use crosswalks; wait for corners; and look left, right and left again before crossing.
Stick reflective tape onto costumes to make your child more visible. Also have them carry a flashlight.
Make sure costumes and shoes are the correct size to prevent tripping.
Use face paint and leave the masks at home. They can obstruct vision.
If an older child is venturing out without supervision, ask them to go with a group. Discuss the route and agree on a curfew. Give older kids cell phones so they can stay in touch.

If you're driving

Drive slowly.
Be alert for children and eliminate in-car distractions.
Practice extra caution at intersections and corners.
Pull in and out of driveways carefully.

Strategic Collaboration Rebuilds Classic Vehicle Coverage

The nation’s largest insurer of private passenger vehicles, State Farm^®, is collaborating with Hagerty to introduce new coverage for classic vehicles beginning in 2023.

“We’re thrilled this strategic alliance will position State Farm agents to help customers protect their classic vehicles while giving them an opportunity to connect with a community of car enthusiasts,” said Rand Harbert, State Farm Executive Vice President and Chief Agency, Sales & Marketing Officer.

Hagerty is an automotive lifestyle brand and a leading provider of specialty insurance for classic, vintage and enthusiast vehicles. The company is known for its outstanding service and for its breadth of knowledge about collector vehicles.

“We are especially pleased to offer State Farm Classic+ customers access to popular Hagerty features and services,” said McKeel Hagerty, CEO of Hagerty. “We are excited to work with State Farm and their incredible agents.”

The State Farm Classic+ policy will be offered through State Farm Classic Insurance Company, a new wholly owned subsidiary of State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company, and may be subject to state regulatory review and approval. This policy will be available to new and existing customers through their State Farm agent.

State Farm Classic+ is expected to be available in most states in 2023.

State Farm Issuing $400 Million Dividend to California Auto Customers

Due to better than anticipated claim results, State Farm is returning $400 million to California mutual auto insurance customers. The dividend applies to approximately 3.5 million private passenger auto policies in California. Through this dividend, customers can expect to receive a check of 18% of premium, or averaging about $100 per policy, for the time period June 1 to December 31, 2020.

“State Farm is once again returning value to our California customers while remaining financially strong to keep our promises now and in the future,” said Tom Conley, Sr. Vice President, State Farm. “This additional dividend is another way we’re making adjustments based on driving behaviors to minimize impacts and help our customers.”

Last year, State Farm announced the Good Neighbor Relief Program, which included a dividend for the period of March 20, 2020 to May 31, 2020 as well as auto rate cuts in every state. Together, these actions provided $4.2 billion in savings for State Farm customers. California State Farm auto customers received an average 27.5% dividend and 6.5% auto rate reduction.

Customers do not need to take any action to receive this dividend, which will be mailed in the form of a check as early as May.

State Farm® to Acquire GAINSCO

State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company, America’s largest property and casualty insurance provider, and GAINSCO, Inc. announced Sept. 17, 2020, that they have entered into an agreement pursuant to which State Farm will acquire GAINSCO for approximately $400 million in cash.

The transaction is expected to close in early 2021, subject to approval by GAINSCO’s shareholders, the expiration or termination of the applicable waiting period under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act of 1976, obtaining regulatory approvals, and satisfaction of other customary closing conditions.

GAINSCO concentrates on the non-standard personal automobile insurance market, specializing in minimum-limits personal auto insurance.

The transaction is the first acquisition of an insurance company by State Farm in its 98-year history.

Transaction Details

Under the definitive merger agreement, upon closing State Farm Mutual will acquire 100% of the stock in GAINSCO, Inc., the holding company of MGA Insurance Company, Inc., a Texas-domiciled insurance company, and GAINSCO shareholders will receive approximately $107.38 per share in cash. GAINSCO will continue to operate as a separate company and brand with continued focus on its current objectives. Over time, the parties expect to provide State Farm agents the opportunity to distribute GAINSCO products in addition to State Farm products and services.

Barclays Capital Inc. was the financial adviser to State Farm, and Mayer Brown LLP served as legal counsel for State Farm. Sherman & Company was the financial adviser to GAINSCO, and Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP served as legal counsel for GAINSCO.

State Farm Cuts Missouri Auto Rates 9.6% totaling $85.8 Million

Driving behaviors across the country continue to evolve during the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on current trends, State Farm is working to reduce auto insurance rates in Missouri by an average of 9.6%. This rate reduction will save 1.1 million State Farm customers a total of more than $85 million.

“Current State Farm driving data and claims experience show a considerable decline in miles driven and fewer accidents,” said Phillip Hawkins, Sr. Vice President, State Farm. “As a result, we’re looking for ways to continue supporting our customers while we monitor and adjust to trends.”

This applies to current customers at policy renewal, as well as new and returning customers.

As part of a move to reduce auto rates nationally, State Farm has also recently filed rate reductions in Illinois and Kansas. State Farm reduced Kansas auto rates 9.3% totaling $32.9 million for 515,000 customers and in Illinois, State Farm reduced rates by 13.7% totaling $320 million for 2.8 million customers.

As more Americans look for more ways to keep money in their pockets, State Farm agents in Michigan look forward to helping drivers do just that. Michigan’s new Auto Reform Law goes into effect this summer and drivers can now determine how much money the change could save them on auto insurance costs. State Farm wants to make sure consumers know their choices before they have to make decisions on car insurance coverage.

Since 1973, mandatory unlimited Personal Injury Protection (PIP) has been in place for all drivers. Beginning July 2nd, consumers will have a choice of PIP medical coverages and may save money, instead of paying some of the highest rates in the nation.

State Farm agents are assisting drivers with quotes on future auto coverage. There are several options drivers can choose from, and having a conversation with a State Farm agent can break down the options so you can make the best choice for you and your family. PIP options include:

Option 1: Unlimited Coverage (this would be the same as you have today)
Option 2: Up to $500,000 in coverage
Option 3: Up to $250,000 in coverage
Option 4: Up to $250,000 in coverage with some or all persons excluded from PIP medical. For instance, you may qualify for this option if you have qualified health insurance. That means your health care policy does not exclude auto injuries and your deductible is not greater than $6000.
Option 5: You can choose $50,000 in coverage if you’re enrolled in Medicaid and meet other eligibility criteria.
Option 6: PIP Medical Opt-Out. You can choose to have no PIP medical if you have Medicare Parts A & B and again, if you meet other eligibility criteria.
