• Non-renew approximately 30,000 homeowners, rental dwelling, and other property insurance policies (residential community association and business owners). (A rental dwelling policy insures rental home owners. Renters insurance is not affected.)
• Withdraw from offering commercial apartment policies with the non-renewal of all of those approximately 42,000 policies. (A commercial apartment policy insures apartment owners. Renters insurance is not affected.)

These actions are California-specific and will occur on a rolling basis over the next year, beginning on July 3, 2024, for homeowners, rental dwelling, residential community association and business owners policies and on August 20, 2024, for commercial apartment policies. Combined, these policies represent just over 2% of State Farm General’s policy count in California.

This decision was not made lightly and only after careful analysis of State Farm General’s financial health, which continues to be impacted by inflation, catastrophe exposure, reinsurance costs, and the limitations of working within decades-old insurance regulations. State Farm General takes seriously our responsibility to maintain adequate claims-paying capacity for our customers and to comply with applicable financial solvency laws. It is necessary to take these actions now.

We also recognize the Insurance Commissioner’s proposed regulatory reforms, such as streamlining the rate application process, accounting for catastrophe modeling and reinsurance costs in rates, and addressing FAIR Plan vulnerabilities. We will continue to work constructively with the California Department of Insurance, the Governor’s Office, and policymakers to actively pursue these reforms in order to establish an environment in which insurance rates are better aligned with risk. 

We will notify customers impacted by this decision in advance of their policy expiration to provide information on other coverage options. State Farm independent contractor agents licensed in California will continue to service policies not impacted by these decisions. State Farm General’s May 2023 decision regarding new applications remains unchanged. We will evaluate the need for any additional business actions as market conditions change.

Teachers didn’t have a choice. Nearly all the Teacher Assist applications acknowledged the emotional challenges posed by the pandemic. Some took it a step further and sought an assist that would help their students address the mental strain many of us have been feeling.

“It’s a huge challenge to manage stress and engagement while learning. My school’s students have been taught on Zoom since last March,” said Monyca Currier. “Many of our families have been affected traumatically by Covid-19 – social isolation, death, sickness, loss of jobs and income – the list goes on and on. The repercussions won’t go away overnight. Students need to learn coping skills not only for the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, but also coping skills for everyday life.”

Teacher Assist grants will be funding mindful breathing and movement, social and emotional support tools and resources, and even a therapy dog! Monyca Currier (Monte Verde Elementary School – San Bruno, California)

Monyca has been exposing her third graders to mindfulness concepts all year. Her grant will allow her to complete 200 hours of Breathe for Change training. She’ll earn certification to allow her to teach yoga and the program’s other strategies and techniques not only to her students, but to other teachers and adults – expanding the social-emotional wellness and learning experiences beyond just her classroom.

“While I am in the early stages of my coursework, I've been teaching mindfulness and breathing techniques all year,” Monyca said. “My students have learned that when they feel nervous or anxious about something, they should pause and take a few deep breaths. It’s helped them develop a stronger growth mindset and the ability to self-regulate some of their emotions and behaviors.”

Ryan Ledlow (Northern High School – Portage, Michigan)

Ryan is using his grant funds for a second Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) therapy dog. It will join @hobbsthehuskie to address the social-emotional needs of students (and staff).

Hobbs, a golden retriever, has made a huge positive impact since coming to the school from Paws with a Cause.

“The pandemic has been very difficult for students (and staff.) Hobbs has provided social-emotional support, and truly does make people feel better,” Ryan said. “I start every day by saying to Hobbs, ‘Let's go make some smiles!’ He does that very thing all day.”

Research shows in addition to helping decrease anxiety and improve physical well-being, SEL dogs help ease social isolation and help students learn social skills and gain confidence.

Incidentally, Paws With a Cause provides dogs for the State Farm Arson Dog Program.

Terry Tucker (Lancaster ISD – Lancaster, Texas)

As the school’s guidance counselor, Terry Tucker has noticed the negative impact the pandemic has had on his students. He realizes they need more social-emotional learning (SEL) support, especially the African-American and at-risk students.

Even before the pandemic, emotional and social learning has been his focus and students in his at-risk school have benefited immensely.

“Negative experiences of our at-risk students create trauma needs. They often act out to get any kind of attention,” Terry said. “When we focus on supporting their emotional and social wellness, we see test grades go up. When you see those positive results, it’s addictive.”

He is using his Teacher Assist grant funds to expand that impact through the purchase of the SEL curriculum resource, School Connect. It will help students tackle real world problems through learning inter/intrapersonal skills, mindfulness and emotional management.

In addition to classroom activities, students can access the resource anytime virtually. The program’s tools allow them to take positive ownership in the areas of character, self-awareness, anger management, showing empathy, responsible decision making, social awareness and relationship skills.

Terry is excited to be able to offer the platform in the coming school year. It will help students understand and define their feelings. That helps them put a name to what they are feeling. With tools to practice at-home coping scenarios, students become less stressed and more self-regulated.

For teachers, lesson plans address bullying, self-worth, self-esteem and respect. The focus is on life skill development, problem solving and goal-setting that will set up students to deal with whatever life throws at them.

“State Farm is once again returning value to our California customers while remaining financially strong to keep our promises now and in the future,” said Tom Conley, Sr. Vice President, State Farm. “This additional dividend is another way we’re making adjustments based on driving behaviors to minimize impacts and help our customers.”

Last year, State Farm announced the Good Neighbor Relief Program, which included a dividend for the period of March 20, 2020 to May 31, 2020 as well as auto rate cuts in every state. Together, these actions provided $4.2 billion in savings for State Farm customers. California State Farm auto customers received an average 27.5% dividend and 6.5% auto rate reduction.

Customers do not need to take any action to receive this dividend, which will be mailed in the form of a check as early as May.

Ben's spent his entire life around horses. Riding since he was five years old, Ben’s passion is thoroughbred horses, taking them off the racetrack, rehabilitating and retraining them before finding them new homes. 

So with the wildfires raging in California, Ben found a way to marry his passions and quickly moved to help. With his truck and horse trailer, Ben volunteered his time and resources to help rescue horses caught in the path of wildfires. 

“These fires are devastating,” Ben said. “We are doing everything we can to help.” 

His life-long experience working with horses has been a huge advantage.  

“I showed up at one farm to help a gentleman with 10 horses that needed to evacuate,” Ben said. “There were no halters and the horses hadn’t been in a trailer in years. There were people there to help, but no one had any experience or training in knowing how to get the horses into the trailer.”  

Ben was able to load the horses on the trailer and moved them to safety. He has moved more than 30 horses to safety on his farm and continues to assist where he can.  

In his day job as a State Farm agent in Walnut Creek, California, Ben stresses how residents need to be aware of the severity of the fires and take any necessary precautions.  

“Get out early, listen to evacuation orders, and have a plan in place,” he said.

Already through July 7, there have been 26,321 fires in the United States*. Though they have burned more than 1.5 million acres and are above last year’s pace, the numbers are lower than the 10-year average.

There's still time to get your property more wildfire-ready. And, it can be completed over the course of a weekend, leaving you time for your summertime pool parties or backyard BBQs.

Wildfire risk exists in all 50 states. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) suggests a three-stage process to reduce wildfire fuel and fashion a buffer around property. To create defensible space and reduce your risk:

• remove dead vegetation
• trim tree branches overhanging your roof, and
• remove combustible materials around structures.

“Preparing our communities for wildfire is more critical today than ever before,” said Lorraine Carli, NFPA vice president of Outreach and Advocacy. “NFPA and State Farm work closely together on this yearly campaign in a continued effort to raise awareness and educate homeowners that they have the power to save their homes and communities before a wildfire ignites, and we have the resources and information to help.”

Break your property into three zones.

Zone 1: the five feet closest to your home or business

• It requires the most careful selection and management of plants and materials. Maintaining this zone reduces the chance fire will ignite near your building and lead to a direct flame contact exposure

• Maintaining plants in this zone helps prevent fire from climbing into the top portion of trees or shrubs. It stops fire from burning directly to your home.
• Wind-blown embers can still ignite individual islands of plants in this zone. It makes plant selection and maintenance in Zone 1 and plant spacing in Zone 2 critical. NFIP suggests removing dead materials and lower tree branches.

Zone 3: the remaining space of the property

• Maintain vegetation and be mindful of the spacing. This will reduce the energy of a wildfire, slowing its advance on your building. Proper spacing of trees and brush should force any fire in the tops of the trees, brush or shrubs to fall to the ground.

And don't forget...

• Maintain your decks. Remove debris and vegetation from on top of your deck, and do not store wood on or underneath it. Store combustibles, like patio umbrellas and furniture, inside.
• Don’t neglect rain gutters. Clear leaves and other debris from gutters, eaves and porches. This prevents embers from igniting your home.
• Assess your wildfire risks and review your insurance policy to make sure you’re covered in the event of a wildfire.
• Create a home inventory to assist in the claims process if wildfire does strike.

“When startups find out I work for State Farm they’re surprised,” says Chan.

State Farm Ventures determined that the idea provides a valued service and peace of mind. In fact, it’s not just for customers facing transportation challenges for their children; there may be future alignment to customers with elderly parents facing similar mobility difficulties.

State Farm Ventures is a wholly owned subsidiary of State Farm. It launched in 2018 with a $100 million investment commitment and has already provided funding to nine companies.

“We try to find companies that are strategic to us. They must benefit our policyholders or advance the interests of State Farm. They must also provide a competitive advantage,” concludes Remmes.

Don't Get Burned Twice: Hire a Reputable Contractor:

• Contact your local home builders association or remodelers council for a directory of reputable contractors.
• Make sure the contractors are currently licensed, registered and insured.
• Get at least three different estimates.
• Insist on a written contract that includes: contractor's contact information, project timeline, payment schedule and permit requirements.

Signs of Poor Business Practices or Possible Scam Involving a Contractor:

• Pushy door-to-door sales tactics or unsolicited calls are common after a disaster.
• Promising discounts for using leftover materials or for referring other customers.
• Insisting on a large deposit or cash payments in full.
• Asking you to secure building permits.
• Unwillingness to provide local contact information.

Aaron donated $1 million to the North Valley Community Foundation and challenged others to #Retweet4Good. State Farm Neighborhood of Good^® also donated $1 million. Countless others joined in. All told, $3 million was raised. 

Now, a year later, the Aaron Rodgers NorCal Fire Recovery Fund is actively making grants. The funds are supporting kids' programs, youth and high school sports, and transitional and permanent housing. 

Rodgers was recently a guest on the Pat McAfee show. McAfee complimented the work he and State Farm have done promoting wildfire relief.

“I just got all of the stats sent to me about what you and State Farm have been able to do for California Wildfire relief,” McAfee said. “Incredible work.”

When wildfires devastated California communities in 2018, Aaron Rodgers' hometown of Chico was among them. He teamed up with State Farm^® to help the area's long-term recovery.

Aaron donated $1 million to the North Valley Community Foundation and challenged others to #Retweet4Good. State Farm Neighborhood of Good^® also donated $1 million. Countless others joined in. All told, $3 million was raised. 

Now, a year later, the Aaron Rodgers NorCal Fire Recovery Fund is actively making grants. The funds are supporting kids' programs, youth and high school sports, and transitional and permanent housing. 

Rodgers was recently a guest on the Pat McAfee show. McAfee complimented the work he and State Farm have done promoting wildfire relief.

“I just got all of the stats sent to me about what you and State Farm have been able to do for California Wildfire relief,” McAfee said. “Incredible work.”

• Advanced up to 75% for total loss of content coverage limit without an inventory.

Does State Farm homeowners insurance provide coverage for debris removal?

• State Farm homeowners insurance may provide coverage, subject to policy terms and limits, to remove debris from the residence premises. We recommend you contact your claim handler, as they will be able to determine if coverage applies and how much State Farm will pay.

• The choice of who to hire to remove debris from your property is yours. Make sure any removal company is licensed and bonded. Some cities, counties or governmental agencies may offer debris removal in exchange for an agreement that you pay all the money your insurance company pays you for this service.

• State Farm does NOT negotiate debris removal expenses with the county, vendor, or any other entity. It is understood that the county, vendor or other entity is hired by you, our insured, and that they work for you – not State Farm.

• If you receive invoices, estimates or other documentation for debris removal, contact your claim handler.

Who pays for my living expenses?

• If damage is so extensive that your residence is uninhabitable, then Additional Living Expenses (ALE) may be available. Generally, ALE reimburses you for increased living expenses you incur as a result of your home being uninhabitable and is subject to deductible and the terms and conditions of the policy. ALE is available to you while your home is being repaired, replaced or up to 24 months*, whichever is shorter.
  • With a recent change in California law, losses arising from a declared disaster occurring after September 21^st 2018, Additional Living Expense (ALE) is available for no less than 24 months and may be extended to 36 months for good cause. Additional 6 months extensions may also be granted for good cause. For the 2017 wildfires that occurred in California (e.g. North Bay Tubbs Fire) State Farm's contract provides ALE coverage for up to 24 months.

How do I replace everything I have lost?

• California law (Insurance Code Section 2071) requires homeowner’s insurers to document customer’s losses and specifically requires an itemized listing of damaged and destroyed property and the value of those items. State Farm’s contract complies with this provision and seeks a listing of all damaged and destroyed property so that an insured is paid for items that were actually lost.

• The requirement to complete an inventory of personal contents has been a part of the California insurance code for quite some time. It ensures that each amount paid to a customer after a loss complies with the terms and conditions of their policy contract.

• For personal contents (the Coverage B portion of your policy), typically, you are paid actual cash value upfront. Then, when you actually replace the damaged personal contents, you will receive the difference as a replacement cost benefit. This assumes the replacements occur within the designated time frame of the contract (up to 24 months)**.

  • ** With a recent change in California law, losses arising from a declared disaster homeowners have up to three years, from the first substantial personal property payment, to replace items per Department of Insurance requirements. This law was effective 09/21/2018. For the 2017 wildfires that occurred in California (e.g. North Bay Tubbs Fire) State Farm's contract allows for items to be replaced up to 2 years from the date of loss

• State Farm regularly reminds customers about the importance of completing a personal contents inventory before disaster strikes. The reason why we emphasize this is we want to pay what we owe and an inventory is a tool for customers to make sure they get the full benefits allowed to them within their policy contract.

How do I complete a personal contents inventory?

• Claim resources are available to provide a personalized experience with the customers by offering a face-to-face meeting with the customers to assist them with completing their inventory. Customers who do not need a face-to-face meeting can provide their inventory to their claim handler for processing or submit them electronically directly to their claim file 24/7.
• Customers do not have to wait until their entire inventory is completed to submit to their claim. We encourage submitting inventories by rooms to make it easier for our customers to compile.
• Contrary to the myth that State Farm requires accounting for every single spoon and pencil, State Farm recommends grouping items of similar quality/price/age: For Example: clothing-jeans-20 pair/shirts-30/etc, cleaning supplies, food, over the counter medication/kitchen utensils as this can help expedite the process.
• Again, if you need any assistance with the contents inventory process, all you have to do is ask your claim representative for in-person support. We will be there for you for this and all other aspects of your claim.

Do I get an advance on my personal contents so I can begin replacing items?

• State Farm provides advances to address the immediate needs of our customers.
• The advances are designed to provide you flexibility to begin the recovery process.
• Generally, customers are initially offered the same percentage of an advance based on the circumstances of the event.
• In some cases, advance amounts are increased based on the individual needs/circumstances of the loss.

• The tragic wildfires are an important reminder to meet with an agent at least annually to review policies and coverage.
• It’s critical to understand that market value​ is different than the replacement cost to rebuild your home. Market value is the amount a buyer would pay for a home, including the land, regardless of how much it would cost to rebuild the home. Replacement cost for this purpose is the rebuilding cost necessary to replace your entire home.
• We recommend that you purchase an amount of coverage at least equal to the estimated replacement cost. But the choice is yours. Since it is impossible to predict today what the exact cost will be to replace your home in the future, it's important to have enough coverage to account for unforeseen circumstances.

How can I figure out the replacement cost of my home?

• The amount of insurance coverage selected is up to the customer.
• Ask if a replacement cost estimate is available when you have the home appraised or consult with your local builders association or a reputable builder for an estimate.
• Building contractors or professional replacement cost appraisers are a good source for obtaining an estimated replacement cost of your home. Estimates from these sources should reflect your home's features. When you upgrade or improve your home, you may increase your home's estimated replacement cost.
• Be sure to inform your agent about any changes to your home that may impact your insurance coverage needs.
• Replacement cost estimates are influenced by supply of labor, demand for labor, and the cost of construction materials. Keeping up with the current market conditions in your area and changing your home insurance coverage amount accordingly, will help you maintain coverage at least equal to 100 percent of the estimated replacement cost coverage for your home.

How long does coverage last for a typical insurance policy?  

• An insurance policy is a contract. You pay for coverage for a specified amount of time defined as the policy period (for example six months or a year). The contract protects you for that specified amount of time and for losses you incur under that contract.
• Coverage is not cumulative year to year, meaning your premiums do not add up like a savings account to be used when there is a claim.

Will my insurance policy be non-renewed?

• There are several laws in California that address significant losses to homes and homeowners insurance policies. For example, following a declared disaster, California law requires that home insurers renew the impacted homeowners’ insurance policy at least once***.
  • ***With a recent change in California law in 2019, insurers are generally required to renew the policy for at least the next two annual renewal periods, and no less than 24 months from the date of the loss. For the 2017 wildfires that occurred in California (e.g. North Bay Tubbs Fire) State Farm is required to offer one renewal for policyholders that suffered a full loss.
• Many factors are considered when underwriting a homeowner’s insurance policy because each customer’s circumstances are unique. We look at each customer’s situation on a case-by-case basis and try to make sure we treat similar cases fairly and in a consistent manner.
• Losses resulting from weather events or catastrophes are included when re-underwriting a policy for continued insurance coverage. Depending on numerous characteristics that are specific to each policy, State Farm may elect to simply renew the policy, send a caution letter regarding overall claim activity, recommend or require repairs/loss mitigation measures or non-renew the risk.
• Our customers are our top priority, and we want to be able to meet their needs. It is our intent and obligation to fairly and responsibly manage our business, provide the best possible service, and provide homeowners insurance for all of our customers over the long term.

• Rates are determined based on our anticipated need to pay future claims, not to make up for past losses. It is important to note that many factors are considered when underwriting and pricing a homeowners insurance policy because each customer’s circumstances are unique.

• State Farm’s commitment to our customers is the same for all claims. That commitment is to pay what we owe promptly, courteously, and efficiently.

• After an insurer has paid its customer on a covered claim, it may seek recovery of such claim payments from a legally responsible third party. This process is called subrogation.

• Subrogation is a common insurance industry operations practice and is pursued in a wide range of losses from auto accidents to large scale disasters. This process helps State Farm recover the costs associated with claim payments made to affected customers and may also result in the reimbursement of the customer’s deductible.

Smart Living, features a spooky twist that raises the question, “Can a Smart Home be too smart?” Smart living is also a way of life for most Asian Americans, who are among the first to embrace and adopt new technology. In the spot, a voice-controlled device, SAL, is a menace to an Asian American couple as he masterminds a series of comedic accidents. But with State Farm agent Amy on their side, the couple knows that State Farm is here to help life go right.

Intuition takes the familiar story of parents-know-best and gives it a humorous Asian Indian cultural perspective. When parents come visiting, their advice doesn’t always get the most enthusiastic response. In the spot, the parents’ advice leads to comedic results and even unwanted accidents, but State Farm agent Anu has their back when things go wrong and is there to help life go right. The spot will be released on September 3^rd.

“We are always looking for ways to build meaningful relationships with multicultural consumers through cultural insights,” said Ed Gold, Advertising Director, State Farm. “This creative work strikes a balance of providing information while recognizing and respecting cultural nuances.”

The City of Los Angeles’ Vision Zero initiative has added a new member to its roster: L.A. Rams Pro Bowl punter Johnny Hekker.

Hekker, the Rams, and State Farm are joining with the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) to help educate fans about Vision Zero, the city’s initiative to eliminate traffic deaths by 2025. Through a PSA campaign with Mayor Eric Garcetti, Hekker will be supporting education efforts about the traffic safety initiative during the NFL season. Vision Zero makes human life the highest value in the City’s road system, and has two goals: a 20% reduction in traffic deaths in 2017 and zero traffic deaths by 2025.

Hekker’s talents in having his punts downed inside the 20-yard line – he set an NFL record with 51 such efforts in 2016 – will help remind Rams fans about the city’s 20 percent Vision Zero goals during games this season. Through a promotional partnership with State Farm, each successful Hekker punt will trigger a reminder to fans both in-stadium and on Rams radio broadcasts to drive safely and take the Vision Zero pledge at visionzero.lacity.org.

In recognition of Hekker’s participation in the program, he will be feted as the city’s first Vision Zero Hero.

“I’m honored that our city has asked me to participate in this program,” Hekker said. “There’s nothing more important than road safety. This is a unique way to remind Angelenos that everyone using the city streets – whether driving, walking or bicycling – should have the chance to get where they need to go safely.”

"The flames were outrunning the smoke. If someone wanted to know what the gates of hell look like, I think this is pretty close," said Bob Pratt, as he reflected on the two year anniversary of the Valley Fire. Bob and his wife Kathy are survivors.

The Valley Fire struck Lake County, California on September 12, 2015. The fierce wind-driven firestorm had an insatiable appetite for destruction. Residents had little time to react. According to Cal Fire, the Valley Fire consumed 76,067 acres, destroyed 1,958 structures and damaged 93 more.

Individuals, families and the community at-large were changed forever once the wildfire made its indelible mark. Two years later, the wildfire’s scars are still visible. Though progress has been made, it seems the whole county is under construction.

The Pratts live in the small town of Cobb, California, north of the Napa Valley wine country. The destruction of their home was complete. They lost their home, photo albums, and cherished possessions but they survived.

As with any wildfire, the damage sustained by individual homes varied. Some homes were completely destroyed. Others were left untouched and many more homes suffered a range of damage somewhere in between. No matter the final fate of a home, the evacuation process during the Valley Fire was traumatic for those impacted.

Tom and Linda Moran live in a beautiful home in Hidden Valley Lake with panoramic views. They watched the wildfire from their patio as it moved from across the valley. It traveled along the hilltop ridges and suddenly the flames were licking at nearby property lines.

"It was panic,” said Tom. “We had five minutes to get out. It was incredible.” Linda explained they “drove out with flames on both sides of the road. It was surreal.” The Moran home survived the fire with a relatively small amount of damage.

The way a community pulls together in times of need is impressive. The people of Lake County are no different. The Moran and Pratt families received tremendous support from their friends and broader community, including complete strangers. The people of Lake County have suffered together, are recovering together and have learned a lot in the process.

Lessons Learned

When asked about what they learned in all this, Bob Pratt didn’t hesitate. “Make sure whoever your insurance company is, that they do what they say they'll do the way they say they'll do it and that you can rely on them,” Bob, a State Farm policyholder, shared. “Because if everything goes,” he continued, “that is where you start. So, make sure you have an insurance company that understands your needs and that you are covered.”

With two little dogs to care for, Bob’s wife Kathy chimed in to remind us that it is important not to forget your pets and their needs. Indeed, pets are members of the family. In your emergency kit, pack dog food and treats, medication and favorite toys. This will give your pet a sense of stability in a stressful situation.

Some other tips the Moran and Pratt families shared are:

• Create defensible space on your property (grass down, trees trimmed, natural fire breaks). It is a key step for the safety of your home and firefighters.
• Have a bag with key items prepared. Create an A, B, and C list to organize your priorities. Depending on the amount of time you have to evacuate, work your way down your lists.
• Take digital photos of your home and personal possessions. Keep the digital photos off site or on the cloud. Also, use a scanner to digitize your printed photos albums.
• Hold on to receipts you accumulate during evacuation and recovery. They are very important in claims process.
• When it comes to filing a homeowner’s insurance claim, the relationship you have with your agent and claim representative matters. Communication is a key to resolving any claim.

Once Lived, Never Forgotten

Not every hardship and wound resulting from the wildfire will find closure but, a lot can be fixed, rebuilt and renewed with fresh optimism for the future. As Bob searched for personal items in the ashes of his home, he did find the melted remnants of his gold wedding ring. It was right where he thought it would be.

He has since set the gold into the handle of his walking stick and moves about his daily business with confidence. Bob carries a reminder of the wildfire with him everywhere he goes. That isn’t unusual for those that experience such a life altering event. The wildfire experience becomes a part of you; you never look at your home and community the same way.

That’s what Nancy Kapko and Trauma Intervention Program (TIP) volunteers do every day.

“TIP volunteers provide emotional first aid and practical support to survivors of tragedy to help ease their immediate suffering and facilitate their healing, and long term recovery,” shared TIP Founder Wayne Fortin.

Nancy knows what it’s like to receive help and support in a time of need. Before his freshman year of college, Nancy’s son Brian was killed in a car crash outside of Denver, CO.

Following the crash, Nancy received an outpouring of support from family, friends and strangers. In addition to her faith, the support from others helped Nancy on her journey of healing.

She learned the power of compassion and a strong support system. As her heart began to heal, she decided to become an Orange County TIP volunteer. Now, she could help people through traumatic experiences, like she was once helped.

When Donna Kline’s husband, a retired police officer, passed away while driving home from a doctor's appointment, she was shocked to find TIP volunteers at her doorstep. “They totally calmed me down and stayed with me during the entire ordeal. They were extremely helpful. I don’t know what I would have done without them,” she added.

“Sometimes people can’t believe we are volunteers. And we’re there just to help them," added Nancy. “Aside from raising my family, being a TIP volunteer is the most rewarding and worthwhile thing I’ve ever done. I want to give more to others than I’ve ever received.”

TIP volunteers are available 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They work with first responders, hospitals and those who render medical aid. The impact Nancy and other TIP volunteers, with the financial support of State Farm, are having in communities is immeasurable.

“TIP volunteers provide healing for survivors. They also offer first responders a sense of closure. Our officers have a peace of mind knowing they aren’t leaving someone broken and alone. There is such gratitude to TIP volunteers,” said Orange County Assistant Sheriff Linda Solorza.

Elizabeth relied on friends and busses to get her children to school and herself to doctors' appointments. Every day was a battle.

In 2016 things started turning around. In the form of a 2012 sedan. The Gomez family became one of the more than1,000 families across the country who were handed keys to reliable transportation from the National Auto Body Council.

For nearly a decade, the National Auto Body Council's Recycled Rides program has provided reliable transportation to families in need. Nearly 300 cars were donated by the program in 2016 alone; 30 of the cars were donated by State Farm.

The Recycled Rides program brings together business partners in the auto industry such as insurers, auto body shops and dealerships with community organizations to identify families in need. Damaged cars are brought back to near showroom condition for their new owners.

Scout's Honor

Camping is an important part of being a Boy Scout -critical to learning and experiencing the great outdoors. The biggest challenge for the largest Boy Scout Troop in the world is just getting there.

In November 2015, the Recycled Rides program provided the troop much needed transportation. A 4x4 truck was delivered to Atlanta’s Boy Scout Troop 100. But they didn’t just fill it with firewood and tents, the troop delivered gifts and care packages to needy neighbors.

Connected by Good Neighbors from coast to coast

Jennifer Castro, a single mom from the Los Angeles area, recalls the day she was presented her car as a day she’ll never forget. In 2016, the single mom was presented the keys to a new Nissan Altima, but also a key to a better life for her and her daughter.

After moving to Dallas in 2012, following two deployments and an honorable discharge from the Army, Henry and Quisha Darcus were barely adjusting to their new metro area when a string of bad luck hit. On her second day at work, Quisha was in a crash and their car couldn't be repaired or replaced.

What made this crash more difficult, the couple's seven-year-old daughter has critical, regular medical appointments. The family needed a car. Fortunately, the Iraq War vet and his family were presented a new sedan to help them navigate Dallas and get their daughter the help she needs.

While many take transportation for granted, this program brings together businesses and community groups to provide vehicles to needy families. Together, they make helping a routine.

Eleven days later, the house burnt down when a candle caught a box of clothing on fire. Luckily, the smoke alarm sounded in one of the bedrooms. The entire family escaped to safety thanks to their gift from the Red Cross and State Farm.

Home Fire Preparedness Arms Families

The American Red Cross Home Fire Preparedness Campaign rolled out across the country in October, 2014. The goal? To reduce the number of deaths and injuries from home fires by as much as 25 percent over the next five years by installing smoke alarms for families who need them.

Across the country, the Red Cross, along with local fire departments and community groups, are canvassing neighborhoods and teaching people about fire safety.

Dr. Davidds knew her mother had the strength, she just had not found it. So, Dr. Davidds made it her life’s mission to help other women find their strength.

Dr. Davidds is the founder and CEO of the Latina Global Executive Leadership and Entrepreneur Institute at the University of Southern California (USC). It is a unique leadership development program that addresses the sociocultural realities of today's emerging corporate Latina leaders and helps them reach their full potential.

With an undergraduate business degree from the USC, a master’s degree in women’s studies from San Diego State University, and her doctoral degree from USC, Dr. Davidds inspires women across the globe to take control of their lives, education and dreams.

She believes in empowering women to be leaders. And she has had help along the way too. She is a graduate of Hispanas Organized for Political Equality (HOPE) Latina Leadership Institute. The goal of the institute is to train Latinas in leadership and advocacy skills, allowing them to create vital change across California.

“HOPE has had a profound impact on my leadership identity and my life. First, serving on their board of directors for 10 years taught me the true sense of sisterhood,” shared Davidds. “HOPE’s Leadership Institute curriculum elevated my competencies as a community and civic leader and instilled a sense of pride of being Latina.”

HOPE and Dr. Davidds have helped create positive change in California, encouraging young women to graduate high school, go to college, be leaders in their community and promote civic engagement. State Farm has supported HOPE for nearly 20 years.

“The pipeline of Latina leadership in California HOPE has developed is impressive and I am extremely proud to be a product of their hard work and dedication,” Dr. Davidds continued. “The advocacy skills the Institute taught me enabled me to create fundamental change within my community, my business and those I lead.”

Dr. Davidds took a risk, rejected the status quo and followed her heart. Now her life reflects her passion for helping and empowering others. She is a Dream Achiever.

Dr. Davidds inspires women across the globe to take control of their lives, education and their dreams. These accomplishments and her continued work empowering women is why Davidds was honored on the Together stage as LA’s “Dream Achiever.”

“A ‘Dream Achiever’ is a woman who rejected the status quo and refocused her life to reflect her passion,” shared Michelle Hare from State Farm Marketing. “She is a woman who takes chances, follows her heart and believes in empowering others.”

Together is a six-city tour convening women across generations and backgrounds for six nights of storytelling focused on creating community, well-being, purpose and action. State Farm is a primary sponsor of the tour and will honor a Dream Achiever at each stop along the Together tour.

“The Together tour is about bringing women together to celebrate love, build community and take action. Through storytelling, Together aims to help people feel less alone in their lives,” said Jennifer Rudolph Walsh, who leads WME’s Literary Division and is producing the tour. “Our work with State Farm to honor Dream Achievers is the ultimate culmination of the Together mission. Dr. Davidds is inspiring and courageous -- a true example of what it means to live in your purpose and follow your dreams.”

More than 2,000 women gathered at the Pantages Theater for friendship, empowerment, and action. Core speakers included Glennon Doyle Melton, Seane Corn, Dr. Jacqui Lewis and Valarie Kaur, with celebrity guest appearances from Abby Wambach and Geena Rocero.

“Together is a movement bringing new ideas, influencers, and organizations together,” shared Hare. “Yasmin is the epitome of a Dream Achiever. She personifies what we hope for all the women attending the Together tour.”

Jonathame Wang was a highly educated and successful businessman in Taiwan. He immigrated to the U.S. with his family in 1982. Unfortunately, many employers did not acknowledge his college education or prior work experience.

He worked in sales, retail and real estate. Then, in 1993, he found a position that offered stability and allowed him to own the business. It also offered the ability to help people just like him. As a State Farm Agent, in Irvine, CA, many of his customers were his neighbors and immigrants like him. They too were seeking to make a better life for themselves and their families.

When Jonathame Wang first opened his State Farm Agency, he leased a 1650 square-foot office. He found it was too large, so he split the space, and created an office half the size and rented the other half.

Jonathame’s son, Steven, spent time at the office as a child. He began working at the Agency while he was a student at Cal State University, Fullerton (CSUF). During his time as a team member, Steven learned three important life lessons from his father:

• Always put people first. Be nice.
• Rich or poor, you must give back to your community.
• Don’t sell something you would not buy yourself.

People First

In March 2001, Steven Wang decided to follow his father’s example. Steven became a State Farm Agent. He knew from his father what it took to be successful. In his Orange County office, people came first.

In 2008, Jonathame Wang unexpectedly passed away.

After Jonathame’s passing, Steven decided to move into his father’s office space. Having built upon his father's success, he was able to expand the office to its original, larger size. What once was too big for his father was the perfect size for Steven and his team. With that expansion, Steven fulfilled his father’s initial vision for his Agency.

Rich or Poor, You Must Give Back

Jonathame valued insurance education. He also believed it was important to help others. So in 1998, when CSUF launched its Center for Insurance Studies (CIS), he drove to the university. He hand-delivered a check to CIS Founder Dr. Weili Lu. That donation, and those that followed, support the CIS mission of preparing future insurance and financial services professionals.

Steven Wang continues to give back to CSUF. He has a life insurance policy that yields dividends and builds an endowment. This policy will allow the university to continue helping students when Steven passes away. He also established the Wang Family Scholarship. It honors Jonathame’s memory and helps students pursuing a career in the insurance industry.

Just like his father, Steven also participates in the State Farm matching grant program. This doubles the impact of his charitable giving.

Don’t Sell Something You Would Not Buy Yourself

For Steven, his father’s passing was tragic but he used it as a life lesson. He saw first-hand how life insurance provided for his family when Jonathame passed unexpectedly. He now shares his own family’s experience. It demonstrates the importance and value of life insurance to others. For Steven, it’s much more than delivering a check.

“Yes, I deliver the check. More importantly, I sit down with survivors. Like I did with my own mother, I discuss things like budgets, expenses and income,” Steven said. “My role as an Agent is about helping people live confidently. I do so by helping them plan for their future."

And so Jonathame’s good neighbor legacy lives on. Steven honors his father by living the three life lessons. They allow him to help life go right for his customers every day.

Thousands of local youth have participated in The Boys and Girls Club of South Coast programs over the past half century. They have learned the value of education; character development; and athletics, focusing on positive sportsmanship and fairplay. Lucy Vega is one of those youth.

“Lucy is a compelling example of someone who began as a member and transitioned into a mentor,” Boys and Girls Club CEO Allen Reese said proudly.

Meet Lucy Vega

Tell me about yourself.

I’m Lucy Vega. I’m seventeen years old, and I’m a senior at San Clemente High School. I’m involved in the College Bound Program at the Boys and Girls Club. I’m also on staff as the Youth Development Leader.

How were you introduced to the Boys & Girls Club?

I remember my sister and I coming here when I was six years old. My mom has been working here since she was nineteen, and my dad started working here when he was young too.

What are you responsible for as the Youth Development Leader?

I lead the Club’s Power Hour. We group the students based on grade level, and I’m in charge of third grade. During the Power Hour, I help students with their homework. I teach students, and I’m also their mentor.

How has seeing your parents on staff influenced your current role?

Since I was young I would observe my mom’s leadership skills, and I learned so many tips from just observing her. A lot of the kids adore her, and I hoped someday I could be a leader just like my mom.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

Seeing the kids every day and making a difference in their lives.

When I was younger, I remember staff members making a big difference in my life. So now, being on staff, I know I’m making a difference in students’ lives. And that’s rewarding.

Is there a particular staff member(s) who made the biggest difference in your life?

Yes, there were two: Azadeh Ghafari and Katy Storch. When I met Katy I was a sophomore in high school. She helped start the College Bound program here. Before meeting her I was not interested in school. I was getting all C’s. She helped me realize my full potential because I’m now getting straight A’s.

Azadeh was also someone who helped me with homework and encouraged me to study for college entrance exams. She helped me become disciplined so I would become better prepared to apply for college.

What are your future aspirations?

I have been accepted to Grand Canyon University, and plan to attend this fall. My dream is to one day own a forensic lab.

What do you hope your impact will be with students from the Boys and Girls Club?

I want them to believe they can accomplish anything they set their hearts and minds to.

Lucy Is Making A Lasting Impact

Just like Lucy Vega will have a lasting impact with the students she currently mentors, State Farm Agent Chris Dolkas was reminded of his impact when he was recognized by one of his former student athletes. When his young children were Club members, Chris taught fair play and positive sportsmanship while serving as a volunteer coach.

Recently, a former athlete recognized Chris and thanked him for being her coach when she was young. She told Chris the hour of sports was the hour she looked forward to the most during her challenging childhood.

“After all these years her words reminded me of why I gave back then, and why I continue to support the Boys and Girls Club now. It makes a profound difference in these students’ lives,” Chris said.

Insurance provided by TNCs may be limited in scope and coverage. Personal auto policies generally do not extend coverage to the use of personal cars as taxis or livery vehicles, including their use in TNC services.

To adapt to changing customer needs, beginning March 21, 2016, State Farm will offer a Transportation Network Company Driver Coverage endorsement in California.

"Adapting and innovating to our customers' changing needs is critical," said Tom Conley, State Farm Senior Vice President. "This new product is an example of our commitment to our customers and provides them coverage, and peace of mind, when they use their personal cars to provide TNC services."

TNCs in California provide $1 Million liability coverage while a paying passenger occupies the driver's vehicle or when the driver has been connected with a passenger and is on the way to pick up that person. However, TNCs provide a much lower limit of liability coverage when drivers are just available for hire and may not provide the drivers with any medical payments, comprehensive, or collision coverages at all. The TNCs may be providing no coverage for injuries to the driver and no coverage for any damage to the driver's personal car.

The new, optional State Farm TNC Driver Coverage endorsement (California) enables a policyholder to have his/her personal auto policy fill in the coverage gaps left by TNC-provided insurance. This cost-effective endorsement provides the driver with the full liability coverage limits(s) he has under his/her auto policy during the period of time when the driver is "available for hire." Additionally it provides the driver with all other coverages applicable to his/her auto policy during all periods of TNC driving.

California customers who drive for a TNC should contact their local State Farm agent to learn more about and see if they are eligible for this new State Farm TNC Driver Coverage endorsement.

Searching For Help

Brian’s wife Shannon was familiar with programs that helped veterans get into homes, but didn’t know of any programs that helped veterans with necessary home repairs. That is, until she heard about HomeStrong USA’s Heroes Home Repair program.

Brian and Shannon recall the moment they learned their home had been selected for construction assistance. They were filled with overwhelming gratitude, knowing that fixing their dryer ventilation, attending to some electrical and mold issues, and installing maintenance free landscaping would change their lives drastically.

The family watched, with awe and appreciation, the transformation of their home. Shannon was very grateful. The HomeStrong USA volunteers even invited their children to participate in the work. “To this day, Cody and Allison still point out to me, which plants they helped plant. I love that. After all, it’s their home too,” said Shannon.

Over the Fourth of July weekend, as the work was wrapping up, HomeStrong USA arranged for the Ladd family to be honored. Family, friends, and neighbors gathered to celebrate the completion of the home repairs, as State Farm Agent Marshall Scott, presented the family with a new American flag.

State Senator Jeff Stone (R-Riverside County) shared, “Efforts like this by HomeStrong USA not only improve the quality of life for a brave Marine, but let’s all our veterans know their sacrifice will never be forgotten.”

“Seeing these projects actually get completed and turn out so great, really gives me a new sense of pride in my home; one that I haven’t felt in a long time. I’m truly grateful for everyone coming out to help our family,” Brian shared after the ceremony.

“Every one of our active duty military service members and veterans deserves a safe and healthy living environment for themselves and their families,” says HomeStrong USA CEO, Jed Davis, “We are honored to give back to those who make the American dream possible.”

HomeStrong USA was a 2015 State Farm Good Neighbor Citizenship grant recipient, which provides funding to support education and volunteerism, and the Heroes Home Repair program.

From an early age we are told, "Don't judge a book by its cover." This holds true for man's best friend. "Bully breeds" in particular have a bad reputation. Fortunately there are passionate dog owners making it their mission to shift the conversation. They believe all dog breeds deserve a chance - a chance to have healthy and fulfilling lives with their owners.

Here are their stories...

Aria the American Bull Dog

Wanting a family dog is a common request from kids and the Terraneau crew was no different. Josh Terraneau, Riverside, CA State Farm agent, and his wife decided it was finally time and brought the whole family to the shelter to find their new family member, an adorable puppy.

"The moment our family walked through the local shelter and met Aria...it was kismet," said Josh. "My youngest son was 18 months at the time and Aria began sniffing him. It was obvious there was a natural connection and curiosity to one another."

The family asked if Aria could be let outside to play to see if they were a good fit. Josh describes the moment of seeing Aria running around the yard as witnessing the dog "blossoming." At that moment, the Terraneau family knew they had found their puppy.

As the one year anniversary of Aria's adoption nears, Josh shares, "I cannot imagine my family without her. She's just such a big part of our family"

Santa Paws and Fido

A passionate owner of five dogs and an advocate for dogs and safety, Linda Newell, a San Diego, CA State Farm agent, works hard to educate her community. She teams up with local veterinary offices and school educators to teach children about dogs. She distributes an activity book, Fido! Friend or Foe to the children.

"I love meeting the members of my community – the dogs and their owners," said Linda."And it's so important to teach the kids about dogs and how to be safe."

Linda also teams up with Santa Paws during the holidays. Together they provide her new customers, who are dog owners, with doggie goodie bags, and the opportunity to get a holiday photo with their pets.

Hundreds of people take advantage of this unique opportunity including a local military wife whose husband was deploying in a few days. The special picture gave her family comfort while her husband was overseas serving our country during the holidays.

The Playful Golden Retriever

State Farm Agent Shea Ferraro describes his golden retriever, O'Malley, as a friendly dog who loves people and the pool. He attributes her friendliness to early socialization with other dogs and people. Since an early age, O'Malley would frequent dog parks, dog beaches, and dog-friendly restaurants. During the summer, you can find O'Malley swimming in their pool. O'Malley enjoys catching a ball in her mouth, and then placing her head on the ledge of the pool. She waits there until someone is ready to toss her the ball for hours of endless fun.

Kensie the Pit Bull

Kensie the pit bull was shaking in fear in the animal shelter. Fortunately, Rob Bills, a Mission Viejo, CA State Farm agent, was with his family looking to adopt a new dog. Rob already was the owner of two loyal pit bulls and he knew he could give Kensie the home she deserved.

"She appeared physically and emotionally wounded," shared Rob. "She only weighed 30 pounds; very underweight for her age and size."

After years of caring for his new family member, Kensie weighs 50 pounds and trusts humans again. Rob says caring for three dogs is a great deal of work, but it's also "wonderful and very rewarding."

Heat, leashes, and learning

The summer months can mean very high temperatures. Agent Shea Ferraro asks people to be mindful of their dogs and children, and never leave them in an unattended vehicle.

While walking your dog with a retractable leash, Rob Bills suggests owners be mindful of releasing the leash too suddenly.

He has observed face-to-face dog confrontations that could pose safety concerns for dogs who are still in training or are not yet socialized. Instead, Rob suggests dog owners talk first to determine whether the dogs can meet and play.

Owner of two dogs, State Farm Agent Andy Popka stresses the importance of getting to know your pet. In particular, by learning his dog Rowdy's body language, he knew which situations Rowdy perceived as threatening. For example, Rowdy used to run to a specific dog bed at their home any time he saw a person wearing a hat and sunglasses. Learning these signs from Rowdy, and their other dog, enabled Andy to tailor their training.

Insuring the underdog and more

"All dogs can be 'great dogs,' regardless of breed, if they are properly cared for, loved and trained," stated Agent Rob Bills.

State Farm determines risk based on a dog's bite history rather than breed. Thus, State Farm does not exclude insuring households solely based on breed.

Political involvement is one of the cornerstones of our democracy. New voters keep the legislative process alive and vibrant. But how do we prepare new voters to exercise the “every vote counts” philosophy and extend knowledge of public policy to the next generation?

Giving students a day outside the classroom is one way. For the past six years, the US Government and Politics class at Terra Linda High School (TLHS) in Northern California has attended “Student Legislative Day” at the Capitol in Sacramento, CA. The program educates them on the political process by exposing them to government in action.

Students tour the Capitol, witness the legislature in session, and visit district legislative offices. The rewards of public service, value of a good education, and the history of government in California were among the topics the students discussed during a recent visit with State Senator Mike McGuire and State Assembly-members Marc Levine and Ken Cooley.

Sophie Leporte made three trips to the Capitol with the class. Now a freshman at the University of Pennsylvania majoring in Public Policy and Economics, the experience helped her better understand the connection between the two areas of study and led her to pursue those interests in college.

“Students should have at least some interest in the process that governs their future,” she says. “People should be curious about their government. What happens in government affects everyone!”

Over the years, approximately 250 students have taken part in the program. Many have been first generation Americans in the Achievement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program at TLHS and they have gone on to advocate in their communities.

Under the guidance of TLHS instructor Randy Baker and State Farm Agent Tim Long, and with the support of the Terra Linda Rotary Club, the students witness the political process in action and talk with lawmakers about how to shape the future of California.

Long was instrumental in establishing the program. He wanted to provide an opportunity for students to interact with local state legislators. Making the connection between the youth, the community and government, helps them see how the process works and makes it much more understandable.

“I have had an interest in public policy for many years. I want my community, especially the youth, to understand how they can be involved and provide an opportunity for their voices to be heard,” Long says.

Michael Howard had one mission when he began painting murals twenty years ago; combat the graffiti that had sprung up around his neighborhood near Los Angeles,California. Almost 1,000 murals later, Michael’s mission has evolved into much more than simply painting over unwelcomed graffiti. Today, his mission is to use art as a way to empower youth to improve their communities by creating powerful and impactful murals with a message.

Founded by Michael in 1993, Operation Clean Slate (OCS) works throughout Southern California to provide students with a platform to artistically express themselves while enhancing their community. These messages are thoughtfully designed and are part of vibrantly colored murals placed in schools, community centers and many other locations. OCS’s murals promote topics like safe driving, healthy eating, water conservation and encouraging activity and exercise.

With the support of State Farm, OCS recently completed two new murals encouraging students and their communities to drive safely. The murals are located at Valley High School in Santa Ana, CA and at the Boys and Girls Club of Buena Park, CA.

OCS continues to transform blank walls, creating beautiful murals with powerful messages. They are also expanding their work to broaden the number of people and communities impacted by the murals.

Valley High School, Santa Ana, CA

Valley High School alumni and a current UC Berkeley student, Dulce Lopez designed a recently completed mural at her alma mater, Valley High School in Santa Ana, CA. The design includes the message, “Texting…It Can Wait. Don’t text your life away.”

As students and volunteers painted the mural, a number of people walked by and wondered what was being created. One student even stopped and asked, “Don’t text your life away? What does that mean?” That’s the power of these murals. They have the ability to get people thinking about choices that could positively impact their life.

Boys and Girls Club of Buena Park, CA

At the Boys and Girls Club of Buena Park, CA, students carefully painted a mural at their community center. Inside, the students were being taught about road safety. OCS partnered with Impact Teen Drivers to educate students about making positive choices as they become new drivers. Their mural reads, “It’s not worth the hype to drive and type.”

The mural’s impact extends beyond the education happening inside the center, but rather to the community at large. “Operation Clean Slate’s artwork not only enhances the visual appeal of the structure, but carries a powerful and impactful message.” said California State Senator, Tony Mendoza. “The mural at the Boys and Girls Club of Buena Park will serve as a daily reminder to practice safe driving habits, and will hopefully drive meaningful conversations in the community and among young people that will help improve road safety.”

“I think that with the movement of the horse, and sitting on the horse, it’s making neurological connections, helping areas of the brain that control the balance,” said Lisa, Giovanni’s mother. “He’s now able to sit up straight on his horse, and he’s walking a lot straighter.”

The Nicholas’ are not alone in seeing the benefits of riding. They are just some of the clients of Therapeutic Riding and Off-Track Rehabilitation. T.R.O.T.R., based in Woodland, CA near Sacramento, specializes in the therapy.

“The children that we help have a variety of issues,” said Shannon Johnson, Executive Director for T.R.O.T.R. “I know quite a few of the kids I work with are on the autism spectrum.”

The benefits of therapeutic riding are seen by parents and instructors, and studies are helping to identify the scope of the improvements (see infographic). Researchers and advocates theorize that the combination of physical and mental stimulation, and the immersive environment inherent in riding, plays a role.

The operation differs from a normal stable in many ways. For one, instructors and staff are in close contact with the riders to protect them. And the environment is shaped to suit the needs of riders.

For example, T.R.O.T.R. recently underwent upgrades including a new softer riding surface, a ramp to help load kids onto the horses, and equipment to maintain the arena, funded by a grant won in the State Farm’s Neighborhood Assist program.

For some kids, these improvements are critical – larger children would be unable to mount their horses without the assistance of the ramp, for example.

But the effort pays off.

“It’s nothing but joy when you bring the kids out here and put them on the horses,” said John Bolden, president of Board of Directors of T.R.O.T.R. “The smiles come over their faces and they light up. That’s what it’s all about.”

His pregnant wife and grandmother were at home worrying about his safety, but also his upcoming deployment. Thanks to a donation from State Farm and others, the Avila family can now have peace of mind and more independence with a new car.

In 2009, a beloved, Northern California mother was a victim of drunk driving, leaving many people devastated. However, over the years, the dedicated volunteer work of the daughter she left behind, has saved many lives.

On April 22^nd, Kate Swanson’s 63-year old mother, Mona Swanson-Norman, was killed. A truck, heading down the highway in the wrong direction with its headlights off, struck Mona’s car head on. The collision killed Kate’s mother instantly. The driver of the truck was high on meth and had a blood alcohol level twice the legal limit.

“More than 600 people showed up to her memorial service,” Kate recalls. “Nobody can imagine how far something like this reaches.”

The ripple effect of a tragic crash reaches far and wide.

About a year after the crash, struggling to cope with the loss of her mother, Kate realized she needed to be around people that understood what she was going through. Kate found Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).

The sense of loss will always be painful for Kate and her family. “The holiday season, in particular, has been hard,” shared Kate.

With time, the pain has become less extreme. Kate has learned to manage her grief, in part, by channeling her energy into volunteering regularly with MADD.

Every year, she shares her story with thousands of teens and hundreds of DUI offenders hoping to stop future tragedies and save lives. Kate strongly believes in MADD’s education programs and feels honored to play an integral part in its awareness efforts.

When Kate’s step-father delivered the terrible news about her mother’s death, all Kate could think was, “there is no way this is happening to me. This only happens to other people.”

In dealing with her loss and finding solace in her work with MADD, Kate has come to realize she probably has one thing in common with the driver of the crash, she says “he probably didn’t think this was ever going to happen to him either.”

Kate’s story is a tragic example of the consequences of drunk driving. She is quick, to remind us, however, that it is fine to have some fun once in a while.

“I’m not here to tell people not to drink,” she said. “Go have some fun but, just be responsible. Be thoughtful and think ahead about how you plan to get around because drinking and driving just is not worth it.”

According to MADD, New Year’s Day is the deadliest day of the year for drunk driving deaths. Additionally, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data shows more than 10,000 people died in 2013 in crashes involving a drunk driver, that’s roughly one death every 52 minutes.

This New Year’s Eve, State Farm reminds all drivers to be safe and take these simple steps to help prevent drinking and driving.
