This puts Illinois on pace for the highest catastrophe claim volume in a decade. Homeowner claims are currently 47 percent above the 10-year average, and State Farm Auto is on track for its second-highest catastrophe claim volume in the past 10 years, with claims 101 percent above the long-term average.

State Farm's claims data reflects a broader pattern documented by experts across Illinois. Through June 25, the NOAA Storm Prediction Center has received 210 preliminary tornado reports across Illinois, driven by widespread outbreaks in March, April and June. One of the largest occurred April 17, when 28 tornadoes were documented across Central Illinois, setting a record for the most tornadoes observed in a single day within the National Weather Service's Lincoln forecast area.

Historical reporting continues to show an upward trend of severe weather in Illinois. The state recorded 121 confirmed tornadoes in 2023, a record-setting 142 in 2024 and another 126 in 2025. Each is well above the state’s long-term average of 54 tornadoes annually.

Wind and hail are driving losses

While tornadoes often dominate headlines, wind and hail frequently cause the most widespread property damage. State Farm's hail claims data shows Illinois' growing exposure over the past four years.

In 2025, Illinois ranked third nationally, with $558 million in hail-related claims paid by State Farm. Only Texas and Missouri recorded higher totals. Across the country, State Farm paid more than $5.6 billion in hail-related claims during the year.

In 2024, Illinois ranked second nationally with more than $899 million in hail-related claims. In 2023, Illinois ranked third nationally with $906 million in hail-related claims. And in 2022, Illinois ranked fourth nationally with $263 million in hail-related claims, demonstrating the state's continued place among the nation's most costly locations for hail damage[1].

The pattern has continued into 2026, with March storms accounting for more than 50,000 State Farm claims across the Midwest. During this severe weather event, Illinois had one of the highest claim counts.

Public weather records reinforce those trends. Illinois recorded 716 severe wind reports and 216 severe hail reports in 2024[2], followed by another 656 damaging wind reports and 167 severe hail reports in 2025[3]. Long-term National Weather Service records show damaging wind remains the state's most common severe weather hazard.

Illinois' most damaging storms are increasingly becoming multi-peril events, with tornadoes, destructive straight-line winds, large hail and flash flooding occurring during the same weather event.

Supporting Illinois customers through an active storm season

As Illinois experienced multiple rounds of severe weather this spring, State Farm has been actively responding to help customers recover as quickly as possible. When pipes freeze and burst, the resulting damage can be much more extensive than most homeowners expect. Frozen pipes can ruin drywall, foundations, floors, toilets, electrical systems, and personal belongings. Plus, repairs often take weeks or even months to complete.

Fortunately, spending just a few minutes on simple prevention steps can save you thousands of dollars in repair costs.

Frozen Pipes
A small crack in a pipe can release over 250 gallons of water daily, damaging floors, furniture, and valuables. Celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, State Farm® is experiencing historical growth and seeking caring individuals — both with and without prior insurance experience — to fill thousands of vital roles.

Because this Fortune 50 company aims not just to recruit but to retain employees long term, you will find surprising benefits and levels of flexibility. Many positions offer work-from-home capability, in addition to competitive pay, access to tuition assistance programs and a welcome bonus.

Sound intriguing? Here are just some of the top reasons for considering a career with the U.S. insurance industry leader.

Making a difference

Insurance claims professionals often help people during the most difficult times of their lives. Whether due to a catastrophic event or natural disaster, people who have suffered losses to their home and property require empathetic service. Any experience in the field of customer service or helping others often provides the transferable skills needed, to include: the ability to listen, have patience and empathize with the customer and their situation. These roles are significant, in that they help make the lives of customers better, in situations when they need it most.

Are you bilingual? Employees at all levels are needed to help customers who speak Spanish, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Mandarin and Korean.

Location, location, location

Because there are thousands of claims positions to fill nationwide, there’s a good chance you can find a job near you. While most of the entry-level positions may be found near one of the company’s hub cities in Atlanta, Georgia; Bloomington, Illinois; Phoenix, Arizona, and Dallas, Texas, there are also claims field positions available for experienced individuals at locations all across the country, including Colorado, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio — and elsewhere. If you have a background in the insurance or construction industries or you simply appreciate the rewarding challenge of helping people in the aftermath of severe weather events and other disasters, you may be able to find just the right location to suit your needs.

Welcome bonuses

New claims hires will be eligible to receive up to $2,000 in tiered welcome bonuses during their first year of employment. This includes a bonus paid after 30 days, plus additional bonuses throughout your first year of employment.

Competitive pay

In addition to industry-competitive salaries, the company offers employees annual merit increases and incentive programs. Each employees’ salary and incentive opportunities are regularly reviewed to maintain competitiveness. You will have opportunities to grow your salary over time and earn promotions, differentials and overtime where applicable. You may also earn special cash rewards for special contributions or exceptional accomplishments.

Tuition assistance

Have you always wanted to finish your degree or work toward an advanced degree to boost your career even further? State Farm encourages your personal and professional growth by providing comprehensive tuition assistance programs for continuing education.

Above all of these offerings, the company seeks and supports a diverse workforce, and considers everyone in the organization to be an important part of the State Farm Family.

“We’re very proud of the recognition we’ve received for being an inclusive employer,” said Cheryl Logue, Talent Management Executive at State Farm. “Acknowledgements such as AnitaB.org’s Top Companies for Women Technologists, LATINA Style’s 50 Best Companies to Work, Black Enterprise Magazine’s Best Companies for Diversity, G.I. Jobs Magazine Top 100 Most Military-Friendly Employer and Disability Inclusion’s Best Companies to work for, affirm that we are on the right track to ensuring that State Farm is a great place to work, for every single employee.”

Ready for a positive change? Kickstart a thriving career by visiting StateFarm.com/Careers.

releases,company_feed,media_feed,Careers,State Farm Careers,wfh,work from home,claims

Take for instance, lightning can strike up to 15 miles away from a developed storm. That’s why the adage “When thunder roars, go indoors” makes so much sense and why we get so nervous when that one family member (we all have one) rushes outside when they hear thunder.

According to the Insurance Information Institute, ground surges account for 50% of lightning related claims. This means that if lightning strikes near a home, it can cause a spike in electricity and short out a its electrical systems. Think the cost to replace shorted out electronics won’t hit your pocketbook too hard? Considering that in 2021, the average cost a lightning claim from State Farm was $12,000, you may think again.

“Look at everything in your home that is plugged into a wall. Now, take into account how much it would cost to replace even half of those items,” said Gina Wilken, State Farm Public Affairs Specialist. “Preparation is key for any kind of weather, and lightning is no exception. Have an annual conversation with your agent to ensure your coverage matches your life so that when something happens, you’re covered.”

To prepare your home for lightning

Consider investing in lightning protection such as a lightning rod or surge protection devices.

Consider a UL-listed surge protection device

Talk with a trusted contractor or electrician to decide what is best for your home.

releases,lightning,2021,top five,claims,media_feed

Courtney used draft authority, which allows agents to directly disburse payment toward the settlement of a claim. By providing an advance on claim payments, we can help customers start the process of recovery. Nirandorn was pleased with this service, saying, “On the news, all I have heard is that insurance companies are a pain to deal with, but that has not been my experience. State Farm has been exceptional during this process.”

Supporting the larger community

In addition to helping policyholders recover from the unexpected, State Farm has used its philanthropic resources to support community organizations that are helping the recovery process.

State Farm has issued $900,000 in disaster-relief grants to community organizations in Louisiana, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, plus a $10,000 grant to the Midwest Food Bank in Illinois to provide support to multiple Ida-impacted areas.

Louisiana:

$400,000 to support the local Red Cross chapter of Southeast Louisiana

$150,000 to support Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans

$100,000 to support Northshore Community Foundation

$100,000 to support The Catholic Charities Diocese of Houma – Thibodaux

Northeast:

$50,000 to support American Red Cross New Jersey Region

$50,000 to support American Red Cross Greater New York Region

$25,000 to support American Red Cross Southeastern Philadelphia Region

$25,000 to support the Philabundance organization

“In the aftermath of Hurricane Ida, we are truly proud to work alongside partners such as State Farm who have raised their hand to support thousands of families impacted by this devastating storm,” said Lindsay Mathieson, regional disaster officer of the American Red Cross of Louisiana. “It is that generous support that allows us to provide much-needed comfort and care to help the people who need it most.”

Said Natalie Jayroe, Second Harvest Food Bank President and CEO, “This major support from State Farm will be critical to our response to this latest disaster impacting South Louisiana. Our deepest thanks go out to the entire State Farm team and their customers.”

The work continues

Recovering from a disaster like Hurricane Ida will take time. State Farm claims operations will continue the work of serving impacted policyholders in the weeks and months ahead. More than 98,000 total claims have been received so far for Hurricane Ida-related damage, and every one of those claims is a life changed by this storm.

Being a good neighbor is about more than just one moment or just one act. For State Farm, it means continuing the work until every last claim has been handled and finding ways to help our communities thrive. When the unexpected happens, State Farm is there to help policyholders and communities recover.

stories,Hurricane,Hurricane Ida,Louisiana,catastrophe,Red Cross,grants,catastrophe response,claims,customer care,New York,New Jersey,Pennsylvania,mobile app,Agents,food bank,disaster,recovery,community_feed

Additional Living Expense (ALE) coverage under a Homeowners or Renters policy is triggered when a covered loss causes the residence to become uninhabitable. ALE can cover some increased costs such as housing, meals, and mileage.

Some media reports are incorrectly suggesting ALE does not apply without a mandatory evacuation having been ordered. These reports are seemingly focused on one portion of our ALE coverage for affected policyholders: Prohibited Use. We are addressing the needs of displaced customers. State Farm is paying, and will pay, thousands of Prohibited Use and ALE claims to our policyholders following Hurricane Ida

For customers who have a loss covered under ALE due to the extent of damage to their home, that loss adjustment occurs regardless of the type of evacuation order in their neighborhood. Once a State Farm customer reports a claim to us, we will evaluate their damage. The process from there depends on many factors including the extent of damage and accessibility of the property. (We’re working with local authorities for access when it’s safe.)

We are here for all of our customers and are committed to pay what we owe. State Farm’s policies in Louisiana, the Northeast and other states, are filed with and approved by state insurance regulators in each state, respectively. Jeff was in the middle of a virtual inspection. A customer’s roof leaked which caused some pretty significant damage to their West Virginia home. Using an app downloaded to the customer’s smart phone, Jeff was looking at pictures of the damaged area.

“We’re doing more and more of these types of inspections,” Jeff said. “It makes it easier for the customers to send in their info so we can process their claim, get them their money and help them recover quicker.”

100 for Good™

At State Farm, we believe doing good is contagious and there are Good Neighbors all around, even though it’s sometimes hard to see. The customer had fallen down a flight of stairs, shattering her ankle.

“She’d dropped her phone and couldn’t reach it, but I could hear her yelling and screaming for help.”

Unfortunately, the only help available was Jeff, and he was hundreds of miles away at the other side of the state. “I didn’t really know what to do, but I knew I had to do something.”

“I kept yelling until I finally got her attention,” Jeff said. “I was trying to keep her calm and trying to keep her conscious.”

She couldn’t reach the phone to dial 911, so Jeff grabbed another phone and dialed for help.

After he got them on the line, Jeff acted as a go-between.

“They were asking things like ‘How far did she fall’ and ‘Can she move’ and ‘Is there any blood?” I kept relaying their questions and giving them her answers.”

When the ambulance arrived, the paramedics picked up the phone that was lying next to the customer on the ground, expecting to hear 911 on the other end.

“I told them, “No, I’m with State Farm; I’m her insurance adjustor.”

The customer was rushed to the hospital and once she arrived, one of the first things she did was write Jeff a heart-felt thank-you note:

Thank you so much for your help with calling 911 and staying on the phone. For some dogs, the increased stress and activity around the home resulted in anxious behavior like barking, aggressive or destructive behavior. As their owners and families begin returning to the workplace or school, experts worry the return to normal could result in a new surge of pet anxiety and behavioral challenges.

In 2020, State Farm paid nearly $157 million dollars for over 3,185 dog-related injury claims. The highest month for number of claims and amount paid for those claims was March, at the start of the COVID-19 lockdown. Experts fear another disruption—this time cause by the easing of restrictions for activities outside the home—could lead to a spike in dog bite incidents.

National Dog Bite Prevention Week® is April 11-17, 2021. Behavioral issues such as separation anxiety could result in aggressive and destructive behavior. This could be a particular problem for dogs adopted during the pandemic. Many shelters and rescues experienced an increase in pet adoptions and fostering. People were home, feeling lonely, and had time for a new dog. Unfortunately, many of these adopted or fostered dogs have gotten the impression that normal life is quarantine life. Now is the time to get your dog ready for the transition to post-pandemic life.

DOGTV promotional offer

DOGTV is a streaming channel created for dogs to help relax and entertain them when home alone or in anxious situations. State Farm does not refuse insurance based on the breed of dog someone owns. While a dogs’ breed may dictate how they look, how a dog reacts in a situation isn’t guaranteed by breed or type. It’s important to remember that even well-trained dogs can bite if they are put into the wrong situation.

Make sure your pet is healthy. Not all illnesses and injuries are obvious, and dogs are more likely to bite if they are sick or in pain. If you don’t have a pet medical insurance policy in place to cover illness or injury, talk to your State Farm agent or go online to learn how a Trupanion policy can help with medical expenses.

If your dog has only been interacting with your family this past year, don’t rush out into crowded areas or dog parks. Try to expose your dogs to new situations slowly and for short periods of time, arrange for low-stress interactions, and give plenty of praise and rewards for good behavior.

Gradually start arranging play dates with other dogs and people as allowed, and carefully increase the amounts of time and freedom together. This will help your dog get used to being with other canine companions again.

Be responsible about approaching other people’s pets. Ask permission from the owner before approaching a dog, and look for signs that the dog wants to interact with you.

Upcoming dog bite prevention webinars - Click images to view details:

releases,Dog Bite Prevention Week,veterinarian,Dog,Dogs,dog bite,dog bite claims,Dog Breeds,American Veterinary Medical Association,American Humane,National Dog Bite Prevention Week Coalition,Pets,pet insurance,home,dog bite injury,prevent dog bites,dog bites,stories,2020,claims,DOGTV,Victoria Stilwell,COVID-19,pandemic,community_feed,media_feed

During the 2019 Dig In Conference, the two insurance companies announced a joint subrogation solution, and are now using real claims data to test how blockchain technology can improve the speed of the auto claims subrogation process.

Subrogation is typically the last phase of an insurance claims process, when one insurance company recovers claim costs it paid to its customer for damages from the at-fault party’s insurance company, which includes its customer’s deductible.

“Today, subrogation is a relatively manual, time-consuming process often requiring physical checks to be mailed on a claim-by-claim basis between insurers,” says Mike Fields, Innovation Executive, State Farm. “In 2018 alone, the total amount of dollars demanded and issued through the subrogation process was over $9.6 Billion for all insurance carriers. You can imagine the time and resources required to complete these transactions.”

Companies across many industries are using blockchain technology to securely store data and manage transactions. USAA and State Farm are testing how blockchain can be used to gain efficiencies in the subrogation process by securely and automatically compiling all subrogation payment amounts, netting the balance, and facilitating a single payment on a regular basis between insurers.

“The blockchain solution we are working on has many potential benefits,” says Ramon Lopez, Vice President, Innovation, USAA. “It helps us automate a manual process securely and creates a permanent transaction record of each payment which can easily be verified for accuracy. It also has the potential to decrease the amount of time for consumers to receive their deductible reimbursement.”

The blockchain subrogation solution is the first of its kind between two major leaders in the insurance industry. The companies began working together in early 2018 and plan to continue testing to determine if the blockchain solution can be a viable product for industry adoption.

What is Blockchain?

Blockchain is a distributed ledger technology that can be used to manage transactions and store information using cryptography (i.e., mathematical algorithms and secret keys that encrypt data), peer-to-peer networking and data storage. This type of digital technology can create value for customers in ways that they wouldn’t expect from their insurance company. Subrogation is one example of where blockchain technology has the potential to reduce expenses while making processes more efficient and secure.

What is Subrogation?

Subrogation describes the right held by most insurance carriers to legally pursue a third party that caused a loss to an insured. Information about the claim is collected and the two insurance companies negotiate the claim amount. If an agreement is reached, the at-fault insurer submits payment to the other insurer on an individual claim basis. Insurance companies only share claim numbers and dollar amounts for subrogation purposes. No sensitive personal information is shared.

In the News:

Forbes (7/18/19) State Farm And USAA See Stark Increase In Efficiency When Testing Blockchain Subrogation

Digital Insurance (4/29/19) Inside State Farm's blockchain journey

Forbes (4/16/19) Block Chain 50: Billion Dollar Babies

releases,innovationtechnologyresearch,blockchain,decentralized technology,distributed ledgers,innovative technologies,insurance industry,Innovation,enhanced customer experience,RiskBlock,subrogation,insurance,solutions,auto claim,claims,insurance claims,transactions,USAA,subrogation solution
