Helping people and strengthening communities has been at the heart of State Farm® for decades.

State Farm embraces Good Neighbor Day, a national observance established by a proclamation from President Jimmy Carter in 1978. Good Neighbor Day encourages people to perform acts of kindness, promote goodwill and strengthen connections in their communities.

State Farm expands that spirit of service beyond a single day by recognizing September as Good Neighbor Month – a time when the State Farm family comes together to volunteer, support local organizations and reinforce the company’s commitment to help build safer, stronger communities. 

This year, State Farm will once again mobilize thousands of volunteers in Phoenix, Atlanta and Bloomington, Illinois, to help provide greater access to nutritious food for local communities. In Phoenix, associates will pack 150,000 meals on Sept. 23. On Sept. 26, 1 million meals will be packed during events in Atlanta and Bloomington.
 

Good Neighbor Month 2025

Those efforts continue the momentum of Good Neighbor Month in 2025, when State Farm employees, agents and volunteers came together through a series of Million Meal Pack events in Dallas, Atlanta, Phoenix and Illinois. Together, participants packed 2.3 million meals to help individuals and families in those communities.

It was heartwarming for me personally to see State Farm associates come together at our offices in the Arizona region. We stepped away from our day-to-day work, rolled up our sleeves and worked side by side to help. It’s a powerful reminder of what being a Good Neighbor can look like – people coming together, caring for one another and using their time and talents to make a difference.

In addition to the meal-packing events, State Farm organized approximately 300 volunteer events nationwide, giving 3,500 employees and agents opportunities to participate in meaningful community service. The State Farm Good Neighbor Walk/Run also generated a $100,000 grant for Feeding America, extending the reach of the company’s efforts to help address hunger across the country.

Community service continues throughout the year

Being a Good Neighbor isn’t just about meeting the needs in front of us today. As an insurer, our role goes beyond helping people recover after something happens – it includes helping customers and communities better prepare for risk.

While September provides a dedicated opportunity to volunteer together, the State Farm Good Neighbor commitment extends well beyond that. Employees, agents and community partners demonstrate the Good Neighbor spirit throughout the year:

• Peanut Butter Drive. Each April, State Farm associates collect thousands of pounds of peanut butter to help strengthen food security for families and local communities.
• Building Safer and Stronger Homes. State Farm continues its partnership of more than 30 years with Habitat for Humanity. Through this collaboration, State Farm has helped families pursue the dream of homeownership. State Farm also supports the Habitat Strong program, which promotes construction practices that can help homes better withstand severe weather and other potential hazards.
• Disaster Preparedness and Recovery. State Farm has teamed up with safety and disaster-response organizations, including the American Red Cross, to help communities prepare for and recover from emergencies. Our work with the American Red Cross spans more than three decades and State Farm has been a Red Cross Mission Leader since 2024, contributing more than $3 million annually to disaster preparedness, relief and recovery. These efforts include support for free smoke alarm installations, blood drives, disaster-prevention programs, recovery initiatives that help deliver meals, shelter and other essential resources when communities need them most.
• Back-2-School Drive. This annual drive gives State Farm employees an opportunity to provide school supplies and other essential resources, helping students have the tools they need to succeed from the first day of class.
• Nonprofit Giving. State Farm employees support causes that are meaningful to them through the State Farm Matching Gift and Good Neighbor Grant programs. These programs empower State Farm associates to increase their impact through charitable giving and volunteering with nonprofit organizations in communities across the country.

State Farm agents continue to play an important role in bringing the Good Neighbor spirit to the communities they serve. For example, in North Carolina, State Farm agent Jessie Summers started a community movement collecting food and monetary donations to help families in the Gibsonville area after receiving a note from a student.
 

Building stronger communities before and after disasters

State Farm associates care deeply about what happens beyond the walls of the company.

Just as State Farm works to protect customers and the people and things that matter most to them, the company also recognizes a shared responsibility to make a positive difference in the world.

Being a Good Neighbor is more than a theme for one day or one month. It reflects the State Farm culture, a year-round commitment to service and an enduring part of the identity of State Farm.

  • State Farm associates and retirees have individually donated nearly $225,000 to hurricane relief efforts. Through the company’s matching gift program, we’ve been able to bring the total to more than $449,000.

• State Farm has more than 2,100 claim professionals working in the affected areas, with another 3,600 around the country supporting customers. Bloomberg News chronicled a day in the life of a State Farm Catastrophe employee in Adding Up the Price of Tragedy in Storm-Ravaged Texas. 
• We have catastrophe response vehicles and associates stationed across southeast Texas to handle claims and help customers in their time of need. The ABC affiliate in Dallas interviewed one of our claim specialists on these mobile units.
• As of September 10, State Farm has received nearly 35,400 auto claims across three states as a result of Harvey. Many vehicles have been towed to salvage yards at centralized locations around Houston and in other areas. The Houston Chronicle tells the story.
