“We were intent on finding a relationship that was an ideal fit with our organization and this community in terms of values, priorities and culture,” said Cardinals President Michael Bidwill. “With State Farm, we absolutely did that. While this is a comprehensive marketing agreement, there will be a major focus on community programs that will have a positive impact across our state. State Farm is one of the most-respected and recognizable brands in the world and Phoenix is fortunate to be one of its three hub markets.”

“State Farm is committed to making a difference and so are the Arizona Cardinals" said State Farm Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Michael Tipsord. “Working with them gives us the chance to build even stronger communities in Arizona and helps us build our brand nationally.”

Arizona is home to one of three of State Farm regional hubs. State Farm is an active member of the local community employing approximately 7,000 individuals. State Farm prides itself on activating its workforce in the communities they reside. Over the past four years, State Farm staff has volunteered over 2 million hours in their respective communities.

The process of integrating State Farm Stadium branding assets throughout the stadium and other team platforms will take place over the coming weeks and much of it is expected to be in place by the Cardinals regular season opener vs. Washington on September 9.

Until today, the venue had been known as University of Phoenix Stadium since its inaugural season of 2006. University of Phoenix will remain heavily connected to the Cardinals as the team’s Official Education Partner.

Since it opened in 2006, the stadium has become one of the most iconic and well-known landmarks in the state of Arizona. The building has hosted some of the most incredible and unforgettable sporting events in America. In addition to 126 consecutive sold-out Cardinals home games and the Fiesta Bowl annually, the multi-purpose facility has also hosted two Super Bowls, the 2015 Pro Bowl, three college football national championship games and the NCAA men’s basketball Final Four in 2017. It was recently selected to host Super Bowl LVII in 2023 and the Final Four again in 2024. In addition, State Farm Stadium will host a College Football Playoff semifinal game three times between now and 2026.

For the Muskopf family, and for other families like theirs, attending Holiday Hearts is an opportunity for quality family time.

“As a parent of a child with a terminal illness, we are trying to create as many memories in Brody’s short life as we can so that we have wonderful memories to last a lifetime,” said Brody’s mom Ric Muskopf.

Where It All Began

Andy and Jordan Dalton always knew they wanted to give back. Andy, a successful professional quarterback, got his motivation from a college coach whose granddaughter had been diagnosed with cancer. Andy learned she was a fan, so he reached out to offer his support. “I wanted her to know she was not alone,” he said.

Jordan’s inspiration came from friends who are special education teachers, and from her life experiences with service organizations.

In 2011, they formed The Andy and Jordan Dalton Foundation and provide opportunities, support, resources, and life-changing experiences to families with seriously ill and physically challenged children. “This experience (meeting the young girl with cancer) is what really inspired the mission of our Foundation.”

“I’m getting to live out a dream that I have wanted since I was a little kid, and these little kids are just fighting for their lives,” shared Andy. “When you see the smiles on these kids’ faces, regardless of what you are doing on the football field, it doesn’t matter.”

Enjoy Being a Kid, and Not Being a Sick Kid

This past December, the Andy Jordan Dalton Foundation hosted Holiday Hearts to help families from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital enjoy a night away. Seventeen families enjoyed a fun holiday-themed evening with Andy and Jordan, including dinner, karaoke, holiday treat-making, a bear building station, games and presents. Each family received a family gift and Christmas tree along with additional gifts from their wish lists. Best of all, families were able to spend quality time with each other, something the Daltons cherish during the holidays.

Ric Muskopf couldn’t agree more. “These events have been so meaningful because they involve our whole family and not just our sick child,” she said. “They can enjoy being a kid and not being a sick kid.”

“For my husband and I, seeing our children happy is the greatest gift of all. These memories as a family are unforgettable, and we are so grateful,” said Ric.

For the Daltons, it’s being able to make a difference. “You really see the direct effect the Foundation has on families. That’s where my heart was when we started the journey. They’re so appreciative of anything that can be done,” said Jordan.

For more information about the Andy and Jordan Dalton Foundation, which is supported by State Farm, please visit andydalton.org or visit them on Facebook.

*Photo credit: Greg Burnett, Robert G Foto

story,Ohio,football,holiday hearts,family time,GoodNeighbor,stories,gold,Andy Dalton,Jordan Dalton,Andy and Jordan Dalton Foundation,Andy & Jordan Dalton Foundation,Cincinnati,Cincinatti Children's Hospital,Passing Along Good Fortune

Today’s crowd goes a little easier on him: it’s a gymnasium full of small children listening to him read a storybook.

“I wish I could climb like you. But I think being different is very cool,” Johnson reads from the book.

For Johnson, this is more than just a fun day away from the grueling schedule of a professional football player. This is serious business.

Training Camp

Growing up in Waco, Texas, Derrick was fortunate to have a great role model for education: his mother. “My mom was a schoolteacher for 40 years. Education was very important in our house growing up, and that always stuck with me. My mom loves working with kids, and I got that trait from her, too.”

But he realizes not everyone is lucky enough to have a great start in their schooling.

So in 2012, after establishing himself as a cornerstone of the Kansas City defense, Johnson established Derrick Johnson’s Defend The Dream Foundation, with a goal of leveling the playing field for a generation of inner-city students in Kansas City.

“In the inner city, if reading levels are below average when entering fourth grade, the chances of those students graduating high school are low. We can make sure that doesn’t happen,” the linebacker shared.

The Playbook

On the field, Johnson has made more than 900 tackles. Off the field, his ambition has been even greater: his goal is to impact the lives of more than 30,000 at-risk children in Kansas City by the end of 2015.

“Education connects kids to the opportunities of their future - it’s the key to getting them out of the situation they are in now,” says Johnson. “By doing just a little bit more and doing it early, in elementary and middle school, it’s going to help them in the long run.”

So far, Derrick and his foundation have focused their work on two main areas: encouraging reading and helping meet kids’ basic needs for school. “We can change the lives of the kids in our own community by encouraging them to read and helping them to feel that reading is cool,” says Johnson. His “Hitting the Books” campaign challenges Kansas City-area students to read a combined 100,000 minutes for their schools, with top readers recognized at special events. Derrick’s foundation has also provided 15,000 books to more than 5,000 at-risk students in 2015.

Also in 2015, the foundation opened its first five “DJ’s Discovery Den,” which partners with Scholastic to transform unused space in a school into a comfortable reading area stocked with more than 1,000 books.

In the fall, Johnson held his second “Gearing Up!” back-to-school program, providing backpacks and essential school supplies to 300 inner-city students. The program is sponsored by State Farm.

Bringing It Home

His family’s past has shaped his outlook, but his family’s future is driving his desire to help as many kids as he can. “Two of my passions are education and working with kids,” says Johnson. “I have four young boys of my own, who I love very much. The foundation lets me combine two things that I love and make a difference in the community in which I live.”

That community has also played a part in motivating Derrick to act locally. Johnson has been a hugely popular player among Kansas City fans. That was never more apparent when he suffered a torn Achilles tendon in 2014 and was forced to miss most of the season. Fans cheered him on during his recovery and after his return – he’s back in action in 2015, leading the team in tackles.

“I love Kansas City. Our fans have been so supportive of me and our team and I want to give back to them.”

Coming from someone who has seen first-hand the kind of difference a good education can make in the lives of students, families, and communities, Johnson’s message is clear: “You can do whatever you want to do, but education has to come first.”

story,Derrick Johnson,NFL,football,GoodNeighbor,Defend the Dream Foundation,stories

“You can imagine, I [was] at the height [of success],” remembers Rob. “And then one call. Boom. It’s done.”

In the months and years that followed, Sims struggled with the void left by his father, who was also a professional football player, known in his playing days as the “Gentle Giant.”

“He was just the best person you would ever meet,” Sims said. “He would take anybody in. He would feed anybody, clothe anybody—anything he could do.”

In His Father’s Memory

He came to realize that the energy he spent grieving could be better used to help others also dealing with loved ones passing—the way his father would have done.

Sims now honors his father by making a difference in his community. Funds raised through an annual golf outing have established a scholarship program at the local community college and supported Cornerstone of Hope — a grief center for children, teens and adults.

Leave Your Mark

Sims reminds others what it means to be a father—creating memories with his wife and children, helping to provide financial security to his family, contributing service to his community—these will last long after a man is gone.

“Everybody’s got a time, everybody has got a day when it’s going to be over,” Sims says. “But you leave your mark, just by being the person you are while you’re here and setting your family up for the future.”

stories,Community,legacy,father,Detroit,Rob Sims,football,community involvement

But nothing could prepare the 6’3, 320-pound guard for the blow he took just a month after he was drafted in 2006 – the passing of his father Mickey, also a former professional football player from Cleveland.

“You can imagine, I’m at the height [of success], you know what I mean?” remembers Rob. “And then one call. Boom. It’s done.”

In the months and years that followed, Sims struggled with the void left by his father, known in his playing days as the “Gentle Giant,” whom Sims remembers as “a real country man” from Union, South Carolina.

“He was just the best person you would ever meet,” Sims said. “He would take anybody in. He would feed anybody, clothe anybody, anything he could do.”

Finding help, delivering a message of hope

Despite his success in the years following his father’s passing, Sims found himself feeling empty – until he was able to work through his long-standing grief and focus his attention back out to the community, living the way his father would have lived and helping others who suffer loss like he did.

Sims and his family have learned to take their love of Mickey and focus it outward. Now, Sims honors his father by helping others who are on the same journey and raising funds for Cornerstone of Hope so that it can help others find peace.

Cornerstone of Hope, in Cleveland, Ohio, was founded by Mark Tripodi and his wife, Christy, after the loss of their son. The organization is supported by State Farm.

“When we tried to find support in our town, in our community, it was exhausting,” Tripodi remembers. “I’m proud to say that we’ve been in the community for many years now. And all of our programs are geared towards serving grieving children, teens and adults.”

A father’s lasting legacy

And Sims reminds others through his words and deeds what it means to be a father and to leave a lasting legacy: from the memories of a life well lived that children carry, to ensuring the economic security of the family through life insurance and financial responsibility, to doing good works in the community that last long after a man is gone.

“Everybody’s got a time, everybody has got a day when it’s going to be over,” Sims says. “But you leave your mark, just by being the person you are while you’re here and setting your family up for the future.”
