According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), 8–14 storms are predicted, below the annual average of about 14. But as Mother Nature has shown us repeatedly, storms, and the damage they bring, don’t always follow the script.

Whether you live along the coast or in the heartland, relying too heavily on forecasts or seasonal patterns can create a dangerous gap between what people think will happen and what actually does. The traditional idea of clearly defined weather seasons is disappearing. And when the timing or the locations of storms becomes less predictable, home preparedness can’t be limited to a season either. It has to be part of everyday home care.

Everyday preparedness replaces seasonal planning

When a hurricane does churn up, it often comes with a relatively clearer timeline and track, giving homeowners more lead time to storm preparations. That’s not always true for other weather events.

Forecasted storms can move quickly, but dangerous factors such as high winds, hail, lightning, heavy rain, tornadoes, and flooding can be less predictable. The days of seeing specific catastrophic weather at defined times, or only in certain places, are fading.

In 2025, State Farm paid $15 billion in catastrophe claims. The Company paid more than $5.7 billion in LA Wildfires claims. No hurricanes made landfall to add to the catastrophes, and of the remaining catastrophe claims paid, hail claims accounted for $5.6 billion.

What does this mean for homeowners?

The message is simple: preparation can’t wait for “hurricane season” or “storm season.” Preparation needs to be as routine as basic household maintenance, just like mowing grass, changing filters, or checking smoke alarms.

Even with this year’s lower hurricane forecast, one storm is all it takes to cause devastating damage—and the best way to reduce harm is to prepare before disaster strikes.

Just as important, preparation helps prevent the second disaster: the one that happens after the storm, when families face repairs, need important documents, and decisions about recovery.

Preparing homes to be storm resistant

Think of preparedness as a household system that works for hurricanes, severe storms, tornadoes and flooding conditions. The best preparations are ongoing and prevent or limit damage that can come from storms.

Stand up against wind with a stronger roof and roof to wall connections. Impact-resistant roof materials can withstand high winds, hail and water.

Cover openings with hurricane resistant doors and windows shutters or heavy curtains.

Secure loose objects outside so they don’t become dangerous projectiles.

Remove debris from gutters, drains and downspouts so heavy rains can flow freely, and water drains away from the home.

Prune tree limbs and branches to minimize debris that could damage buildings or power lines.

Use the FEMA Flood Map Service Center to know your flood risk.

Regularly reviewing the homeowners insurance policy with an agent can make sure the right coverages, deductibles and endorsements are in place. An agent can also make sure homeowners get all the discounts they qualify - like using impact-resistant materials.

The Takeaway

Storm and hurricane seasons aren’t what they used to be but homeowners still control what happens next. With weather being less predictable and severe conditions often striking with little warning, preparation needs to be a year-round habit.

Being prepared ahead of time means focusing on what’s important when it matters most, staying safe during the event and getting help faster afterward.

releases,Hurricane,storms

They are distributing fully equipped laptops, printers and a host of additional technical equipment to prepare claims handlers to respond effectively to affected customers.

Our Ian response includes State Farm agents who live and work in the same neighborhoods as our customers, and teams of claim specialists trained in disaster response traveling in to evaluate damage on site. They are joined by thousands of employees in centralized care centers across the country helping answer customers’ questions and file their claims.

Additionally, our remote claim teams are able to conduct virtual inspections with impacted customers following the storm, helping customers in their time of need. The use of aerial imagery during the first stage of response helps determine the areas of severe impact. This helps State Farm identify the hardest hit areas and customers, and assess where we need to initially respond and send our first wave of resources to start handling claims for those hardest hit.

Our State Farm Customer Response Units (CRUS) have been traveling throughout communities impacted by Ian. CRU team members and State Farm agents have distributed needed items such as bottled water, packed snacks, work gloves and other useful items for residents. The CRU team responds immediately following a disaster, and navigates throughout impacted areas to provide in-person contact and assistance to those in need. State Farm agents often ride along on the CRU, and can offer neighbors helpful information about filing their claim and insurance tips. State Farm is there to help residents during this first and critical step on the road to recovery.

After the storm - Don’t sign anything and contact State Farm first

Given the possibility of widespread home damage and claims from Hurricane Ian, we want to make Floridians aware of an important issue called AOB (Assignment of Benefits). State Farm has seen an increase in claims with an Assignment of Benefits throughout the state.

Once it is safe to do so, check your property for damage. If you have home damage from the storm, please follow these tips to avoid an AOB mistake: If you have a property damage loss in your home, contact State Farm immediately to report the claim. Be careful before signing anything without fully reading the documents. Remember that an AOB transfers the payment and many rights of your claim to the vendor or contractor. This language is often difficult to identify in the documents. Keep your rights! Vendors taking AOBs may be water mitigation companies, roofers or other contractors. Be diligent before signing anything with a vendor/contractor that solicits you directly and advises you to file a homeowner’s claim. Also, preserve all building materials removed by any contractor or vendor until you speak with State Farm.

Customers impacted by Ian urged to report claim as soon as possible

To provide the best possible service and response to customers who may be impacted by Hurricane Ian, the following are in place:

The 1-800-SFCLAIM line is activated and available for customers to begin the claim reporting process after the storm hits, should they be unable to reach their local State Farm agent.

State Farm policyholders who have damage from Hurricane Ian can submit and manage their claim through various channels. Especially for our customers.

However, there was time, a very important time, in our history that it did. But we'll get to that in a minute.

Let’s begin with how we respond to catastrophes today.

Currently, our catastrophe claim team monitors potential severe weather events around the clock. This allows us to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. If the former happens, our Deployed Claims Specialists can be on the ground within hours after the storm dissipates, our in-office teams stand ready to assist, and our agents are embedded in the community.

We organize a force of thousands across the company within hours and stay until recovery is complete - which in some cases, can mean weeks or even months. The technology available for tracking weather and claim handling is leaps and bounds over what it was when State Farm was founded 100 years ago. This technology and our amazing Weather and Catastrophe Services team make it possible to for us to get to our customers and help them recover, faster.

Was it always like that? No. However, necessity drove the invention of the National Catastrophe (NATCAT) team. Why? Because we saw a need. We learned. We innovated. We changed.

Let's look back to 1969, when Hurricane Camille hit the Gulf Coast.

Camille was a beast. She did $1.4 BILLION in damages ($11.2 BILLION in today's dollars). At that time, we used independent firms to respond to catastrophes. When Camille hit, those firms couldn’t handle our high volume. They didn’t have enough people or resources to commit to recovering from a storm like Camille.

Necessity: Take care of our customers like a good neighbor.

Innovation: Create an in-house staff that deploys fast.

In 1971, State Farm created the Special Disaster Services (SDS) team which used on-staff claims personnel from across the country that reported for temporary assignments to catastrophe areas. SDS responded to catastrophes such as the 1974 Super Outbreak of tornadoes, the Great Lakes Blizzard of 1977, and the eruption of Mount St. Helens. They did their job, and they did it well.

However, in 1992 everything changed when Hurricane Andrew hit the gulf coast, impacting every state from Florida to Texas. As a Category 5 hurricane, it caused more than $27.3 BILLION ($56B in today's dollars) in damages. It was the worst hurricane recorded to date. State Farm alone had 361,000 claims from Hurricane Andrew. The destruction was so widespread, even getting into the area to survey damage and begin rebuilding was a huge mountain to climb.

Another obstacle we faced with Andrew was the need for claims personnel specifically trained in total loss estimating. Because of how SDS was set up, identifying and deploying personnel with the right training was difficult. In some cases, resources were not ready to deploy for more than a week. The structure of a non-dedicated catastrophe staff created challenges for those who were deployed and for those who remained at home. It put a lot of stress on everyday claims operations because we needed so many claim handlers to assist with Andrew, all who had responsibilities their home teams filled while they deployed.

Necessity: Highly trained, specialized resources who deploy on a moment's notice

Innovation: State Farm National Catastrophe Team

In 1997, State Farm created the NATCAT team. This team was filled with hundreds of people who were hired specifically to respond to catastrophes. A requirement of the position was they commit to travel on short notice. This team was trained in total loss of auto and buildings and in weather events such as hurricanes, tornadoes, hail, and wildfires.

Over the years, NATCAT evolved into a bigger operation beyond only those who deploy. Now named Weather and Catastrophe Services, the team includes people from across the company who track weather events, organize deployments, set up on-site claims and assistance centers in impacted areas, in-office support for claims handling, philanthropy, public affairs, and management services needed to serve our customers.

Over the past 25 years, we've taken this approach and utilized the industry's best catastrophe response personnel to ensure we reach our customers fast and with the best customer service available. This team plans, tracks, organizes, deploys, and assists our customers, no matter the time or day. To this very day, the Weather and Catastrophe Services team is evolving to better serve our customers. We use new technology to offer virtual service options, claim handling, and claim filing to help our customers start the road to recovery, faster.

“There is no harm in repeating a good thing.” - Plato

Here at State Farm, we couldn't agree more.

releases,GN100,media_feed,catastrophe,Hurricane,Tornado,storms,storm chaser

How a family plans to handle its pets is often overlooked during the planning period, and that leaves some pet owners scrambling during times of stress. Before a disaster strikes, locate the pet-friendly hotels in your surrounding areas. Collect their phone numbers and keep them in your disaster backpack so you can call and make the reservation. Also, if a disaster is imminent, as in an approaching firestorm or flood, make the hotel reservation before the evacuation. The hotel may give some type of disaster discount as a community service, so be sure to ask.

Call local shelters in advance to find out if they provide emergency housing for evacuated pets.

If you are going to a public shelter, it is important to understand that animals may not be allowed inside. Plan in advance for shelter alternatives that will work for both you and your pets. Consider loved ones or friends outside of your immediate area who would be willing to host you and your pets in an emergency.

Make a back-up emergency plan in case you can't care for your animals yourself. Bringing the largest disaster response in the industry means a coordinated effort of people, technology and resources, all working together to provide exceptional service to policyholders and support to the community.

State Farm is there

State Farm Claims specialists assist customers at Louisiana Customer Care sites

In addition to thousands of employees remotely helping thousands of customers on the phone and online, State Farm claims operations are on site, day after day, helping policyholders in impacted areas.

In support of Ida response, State Farm set up seven mobile Customer Care sites – four in Louisiana and three in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. These operations bring claims teams and customers together to inspect vehicles, help with questions, and disburse payments.

Over the last two weeks, more than 1,500 customers have been given in-person help at our Louisiana Customer Care sites. So far, our overall claims operations have been able to reach more than 90% of customers who have filed a homeowner claim related to Ida, with 1 in 4 of those claims already settled.

Neighbors helping neighbors

A big part of the State Farm difference is the 19,000 State Farm agents who live and work in the same communities as our policyholders. That means that in addition to access by phone, app, and web site, State Farm customers have a State Farm agent right there in the neighborhood, ready to talk through your hopes, plans, and needs. And when disaster happens, they are neighbors ready to help.

In the wake of Ida, State Farm agents reached out to customers in impacted areas to help the recovery process.

Agent Courtney Gulledge of Harahan, La., lived up to that promise when one of her policyholders, Tassanee Nirandorn, received severe damage to his home. Courtney used draft authority, which allows agents to directly disburse payment toward the settlement of a claim. By providing an advance on claim payments, we can help customers start the process of recovery. Nirandorn was pleased with this service, saying, “On the news, all I have heard is that insurance companies are a pain to deal with, but that has not been my experience. State Farm has been exceptional during this process.”

Supporting the larger community

In addition to helping policyholders recover from the unexpected, State Farm has used its philanthropic resources to support community organizations that are helping the recovery process.

State Farm has issued $900,000 in disaster-relief grants to community organizations in Louisiana, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, plus a $10,000 grant to the Midwest Food Bank in Illinois to provide support to multiple Ida-impacted areas.

Louisiana:

$400,000 to support the local Red Cross chapter of Southeast Louisiana

$150,000 to support Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans

$100,000 to support Northshore Community Foundation

$100,000 to support The Catholic Charities Diocese of Houma – Thibodaux

Northeast:

$50,000 to support American Red Cross New Jersey Region

$50,000 to support American Red Cross Greater New York Region

$25,000 to support American Red Cross Southeastern Philadelphia Region

$25,000 to support the Philabundance organization

“In the aftermath of Hurricane Ida, we are truly proud to work alongside partners such as State Farm who have raised their hand to support thousands of families impacted by this devastating storm,” said Lindsay Mathieson, regional disaster officer of the American Red Cross of Louisiana. “It is that generous support that allows us to provide much-needed comfort and care to help the people who need it most.”

Said Natalie Jayroe, Second Harvest Food Bank President and CEO, “This major support from State Farm will be critical to our response to this latest disaster impacting South Louisiana. Our deepest thanks go out to the entire State Farm team and their customers.”

The work continues

Recovering from a disaster like Hurricane Ida will take time. State Farm claims operations will continue the work of serving impacted policyholders in the weeks and months ahead. More than 98,000 total claims have been received so far for Hurricane Ida-related damage, and every one of those claims is a life changed by this storm.

Being a good neighbor is about more than just one moment or just one act. For State Farm, it means continuing the work until every last claim has been handled and finding ways to help our communities thrive. When the unexpected happens, State Farm is there to help policyholders and communities recover.

stories,Hurricane,Hurricane Ida,Louisiana,catastrophe,Red Cross,grants,catastrophe response,claims,customer care,New York,New Jersey,Pennsylvania,mobile app,Agents,food bank,disaster,recovery,community_feed

Additional Living Expense (ALE) coverage under a Homeowners or Renters policy is triggered when a covered loss causes the residence to become uninhabitable. ALE can cover some increased costs such as housing, meals, and mileage.

Some media reports are incorrectly suggesting ALE does not apply without a mandatory evacuation having been ordered. These reports are seemingly focused on one portion of our ALE coverage for affected policyholders: Prohibited Use. We are addressing the needs of displaced customers. State Farm is paying, and will pay, thousands of Prohibited Use and ALE claims to our policyholders following Hurricane Ida

For customers who have a loss covered under ALE due to the extent of damage to their home, that loss adjustment occurs regardless of the type of evacuation order in their neighborhood. Once a State Farm customer reports a claim to us, we will evaluate their damage. The process from there depends on many factors including the extent of damage and accessibility of the property. (We’re working with local authorities for access when it’s safe.)

We are here for all of our customers and are committed to pay what we owe. State Farm’s policies in Louisiana, the Northeast and other states, are filed with and approved by state insurance regulators in each state, respectively. It is a separate coverage that can be purchased through the federal government’s National Flood Insurance Program. State Farm agents enrolled in the NFIP Direct Program are able to write and service flood insurance coverage directly through the federal government program. Previous waivers State Farm was granted were limited to a short time frame and to specific geographic areas impacted by hurricanes.

“It’s been a team effort to make drone technology a reality,” says Senior Vice President for P&C Claims Robert Yi. “The waiver will provide our claims specialists with another way to efficiently help customers. We can use drones to assess on-the-ground damage and deploy resources. This is a huge win for our customers and demonstrates we’re recognized as a leader in drone technology.”

Current FAA regulations restrict pilots from flying drones beyond their visual line of sight and over groups of people. In a catastrophe situation, access to the impacted area may be challenged by water, debris and damage to infrastructure. The national waiver will also open up new innovation opportunities for State Farm by allowing longer-distance flights.

“There are many possibilities for the use of drones but FAA regulators need to be assured that operations can be conducted safely” said Mark Blanks, Director for the Mid-Atlantic Aviation Partnership (MAAP) at Virginia Tech. “State Farm had a compelling proposal for how drones could improve their customer experience and an unwavering commitment to safety. MAAP had the operational expertise and the research experience to help them navigate the approval process and collect supporting data. This success shows how powerful it can be when industry and academia collaborate to break new ground.”

How we got here

For nearly two years, State Farm has been working with the Mid-Atlantic Aviation Partnership (MAAP) at Virginia Tech on drone safety case research. In May 2018, the Commonwealth of Virginia was selected as one of 10 teams selected to be part of the FAA Integration Pilot Program (IPP). As a member of the Virginia IPP team, State Farm has worked with MAAP to assess a wide range of potential risks and strategies for reducing them.

“I’m proud of the teamwork demonstrated in making a nationwide waiver a reality at State Farm,” says Mark Oakley, Senior Vice President for Labs @ State Farm. “The partnership between Claims, Labs and Virginia Tech has been integral in getting us to this point. As the first and only company to secure a nationwide waiver to date, this is a substantial achievement and testament to the skills, knowledge, passion and commitment of these teams. We strongly believe the waivers provide us with the ability to explore new and exciting opportunities for State Farm.”

State Farm and MAAP have conducted numerous tests that evaluated the fixed-wing eBee Classic drone, manufactured by senseFly, for longer-distance damage assessment flights. Based on the strength of the research and resulting safety case documentation, the FAA approved temporary waivers for State Farm to conduct damage-assessment drone flights over people and beyond the operator’s visual line of sight in states impacted by Hurricanes Florence and Michael. Successful flights in the aftermath of the two hurricanes yielded valuable real-world experience and insights that were incorporated into the national waiver request.

Over the next several years, the members of the Virginia IPP team will continue exploring innovative ways to safely use drone technology, including catastrophe response, emergency management, and infrastructure inspection. The day-to-day operations of the Virginia IPP team is managed by MAAP.

In The News

Forbes: FAA OKs Long-Range Drone Flights Over Populated Areas By State Farm To Assess Florence Damage (9/19/18)

Virginia Tech: National waiver lays out a roadmap for drone integration (3/8/19)

Robotics Business Review: How State Farm Earned National Waiver for Drone Flights (3/15/19)

releases,FAA,Drones,Federal Aviation Administration,waiver for beyond line of sight,UAS,Unmanned Aerial Systems,Virginia Tech,VA,Hurricane,Hurricane Florence,Florence,State Farm,Drone technology,innovation/technology/research,disaster assessment,Virginia Tech Mid-Atlantic Aviation Partnership (MAAP),FAA Integration Pilot Program (IPP),State Farm® Granted First National FAA Waiver for Damage Assessment Drone Flights,OOP,drone operations over people,Mark Oakley,Labs @ State Farm,fixed-wing eBee Classic drone,beyond the pilot’s visual line of sight,BVLOS,Robert Yi,Technology,claim specialists

The FAA waiver combines permissions for two types of operations that are typically tightly restricted: operations over people and flights beyond the operator’s visual line of sight. These provisions are approved over four states impacted by Hurricane Florence; together, they dramatically enhance State Farm’s ability to evaluate hurricane damage and allocate resources.

The insurance company has been collaborating with the Virginia Tech Mid-Atlantic Aviation Partnership (MAAP) on one of ten elite teams selected earlier this year to the FAA Integration Pilot Program (IPP). Their successful application for this unprecedented waiver is a testament to the program’s success in facilitating rapid, research-based advances in drone operations to serve communities’ needs.

“State Farm needs to quickly assess damage after significant weather events,” says Robert Yi, Senior Vice President – State Farm. “Drone technology provides us with the capability to quickly deploy over a catastrophe site and assess damage from the air. The data we obtain from drone flights can be used to help us determine the severity of damage. This also allows us to place our Claims team on-the-ground and evaluate uninhabitable insured property.”

Since May 2018, State Farm has collaborated with MAAP and Virginia Tech’s world-renowned injury biomechanics group to assess a wide range of potential risks and strategies for reducing them; the team collected data on a variety of parameters including the aircraft’s communications performance, navigational precision, and the risk of injury to humans. The strength of the data made a compelling case to the FAA that State Farm could safely conduct sophisticated aerial damage-assessment operations following the devastating impact of Hurricane Florence. That capability gives State Farm additional tools to serve customers and moves the whole drone industry forward.

Current FAA regulations restrict pilots from flying drones beyond their visual line of sight and from flying drones over groups of people. In a catastrophe situation such as Hurricane Florence, access to the area may be challenged by water, debris, and damage to infrastructure. Damage may also extend across a large area, making efficient damage assessment very difficult. The new waiver will make the insurer’s work much easier by allowing longer-distance flights over densely populated areas.

The FAA waiver reflects months of detailed research following a process pioneered by MAAP for identifying, evaluating, and mitigating potential risks presented by drone operations.

“This is a pivotal moment that demonstrates the value of a risk-based safety case development process,” said MAAP director Mark Blanks. “Drone technology has tremendous potential to serve the public, but before we can harness that capability we need to demonstrate conclusively that ambitious operations can be done safely. This waiver, and the volume of research that backs it up, shows that this approach works.”

The disaster-assessment work this waiver will enable exemplifies the purpose of the IPP: to facilitate the next generation of drone applications by working with communities on groundbreaking projects that can improve the public’s quality of life and spur innovation. Through research collaboration with MAAP, State Farm determined that flying the eBee fixed-wing drone reduced the risk of damage to people and property. Manufactured by senseFly, the drone also captures high-resolution imagery.

Earlier this year, the Virginia-based research team was selected for the FAA Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Integration Pilot Program (IPP). The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced their selection of teams for the multi-year program following a competitive application process. State Farm is the only insurance company selected to participate in the program. Approximately 150 communities applied for the program. Only 10 teams from across the country were selected.

Over the next three years, the Virginia team will explore applications of drone technology including catastrophe response, emergency management, and infrastructure inspection. The day-to-day operations will be managed by Mid-Atlantic Aviation Partnership (MAAP) at Virginia Tech, which has accumulated significant expertise running one of only seven federal test sites for unmanned aircraft systems. The organization has built a reputation for facilitation of ground-breaking testing while upholding the most rigorous standards of safety.

In The News

Forbes: FAA OKs Long-Range Drone Flights Over Populated Areas By State Farm To Assess Florence Damage (9/19/18)

Unmanned Aerial: State Farm Granted Key Drone Permissions for Florence Damage Assessment (9/19/18)

The Roanoke Star: VA Tech / State Farm Collaborate to Secure FAA Waiver for Drone Operations in Areas Impacted by Hurricane Florence (9/19/18)

releases,FAA,Drones,Federal Aviation Administration,waiver for beyond line of sight,UAS,Unmanned Aerial Systems,Virginia Tech,VA,NC,SC,North Carolina,South Carolina,Hurricane,Hurricane Florence,Florence,State Farm,Drone technology,innovation/technology/research,disaster assessment,Virginia Tech Mid-Atlantic Aviation Partnership (MAAP),FAA Integration Pilot Program (IPP)

Are you ready?

A little preparation can make a big difference when it comes to safety and security of your family and pets. Homeowners can protect themselves and their property in advance of the storm with a few simple steps:

Have an evacuation plan. Before the hurricane, decide what you will do. Find out the location of evacuation shelters. Determine if you will ride out the storm in your home (if local authorities permit you to stay), or establish a safe place inland. Plan an escape route. Tell relatives where you will be.

Put together an emergency kit. The kit should include basics such as water, food, first aid supplies, clothing, blankets, and important documents. Store your kit in airtight plastic bags or a plastic storage container with a lid.

Protect your property. Stock plywood and materials you may need to board up windows. Move garbage cans and other large objects inside the house or garage. Secure boats and cars.

Create a home inventory. Make a list of your possessions and their estimated value.

The Hurricane Hunter aircraft were on display as part of the National Weather Services’ (NWS) Hurricane Preparedness Week tour stop at McAllen, presented by the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes. Ruben, a State Farm agent in La Joya, Texas, was invited to attend to answer general questions about insurance preparations.

“When I told my wife we were going to attend this wonderful event I told her that they were bringing the planes to it, too,” Ruben says. “She said ‘I don’t think I would ever dare fly a plane into a hurricane.’ I told her, they don’t fly into them, they fly over them.”

Ruben was half-right.

The NWS uses the WC-130J Hercules, a high-wing, medium-range aircraft as a weather data collection platform that flies into storms and hurricanes, where it collects and reports weather data as often as every minute. It also uses a Gulfstream IV-SP (G-IV) jet that flies around and over developing tropical cyclones to create a detailed picture of the surrounding upper atmosphere.

“So I get there and I asked one of the Hercules crew members how high above the storm does he fly,” Ruben says. “And he said we fly right into it. I had egg on my face. I didn’t know. Everybody has something they can learn.”

The purpose of the tour, presented in part by the FLASH.org, was to educate and raise awareness about the threat of hurricanes as the June 1 opening of the Atlantic Ocean Basin hurricane season nears. Hurricane preparedness includes more than just storm shutters, an evacuation plan and a survival kit.

“A home is more than just a major financial investment. It provides families with shelter from the dangers of severe weather,” Federal Alliance for Safe Homes, Inc. President and CEO Leslie Chapman-Henderson says. “Homeownership comes with many responsibilities, the most important of which is protecting the financial investment consumers have made in their homes.”

FLASH.org is promoting #HurricaneStrong, an initiative to promote wholesale preparation through education – which includes understanding storm danger, knowing evacuation routes, have a survival kit and ensuring you have adequate insurance to assist in financial recovery.

“State Farm agents at our stops on the tour are able to answer general questions from consumers and the media about mitigation steps before, during and after a natural disaster,” Leslie says. “We want to help ensure homes are as safe and strong as they can be, and that consumers better understand the role of insurance in protecting them and their belongings inside.”

Ruben has focused on educating consumers of the potential devastation of hurricanes and other storms.

“Hurricane Harvey was a big wake-up call for everybody,” says Ruben, whose community was spared the brunt of the storm last year. “So many people do not understand how insurance works. As State Farm agents, we have responsibility to help educate customers – even if they are not State Farm customers – on how serious the hurricane threat can be.”

And as Ruben learned when he attended the tour, even the experts have something to learn.

For more information on hurricane preparedness, visit the National Weather Service.
<pp:caseid>144339</pp:caseid>

When nature takes a walk on the wild side, we realize how prepared we really are – or aren’t. Three families share their stories as well as what they’ve learned as they’ve recovered from their disastrous weather encounters.

Jack McDonald had been settled in his little corner of Ellensburg, Washington, for 17 years with his wife, their horses, their dogs and “the coolest gang of cats you ever saw,” he says. You might not think of the rain-soaked Pacific Northwest as at risk for wildfires, but they were on the edge of open range and had come close in the past.

On August 13, 2012, his wife called. She could see the smoke and said, "We gotta get out of here.” Twenty minutes later the horses were loaded in a trailer and their dogs were in her car. He could see the fire in the distance. “The winds were horrendous – 60 miles per hour across the ridge – but it looked like it might miss us,” he recalled.

McDonald put the cats in their double-wide mobile home and was giving his wife a hand with the horses when he heard that the fire was spreading – and had changed course. “I came back up to my ranch, and it was clear that my house was in danger. I was going to go get the cats, but the fire chief stopped me. The fire had already swept in.”

The McDonalds’ home burned down to the crawlspace, leaving nothing but ash. “Glassware and cookware had melted into puddles,” Jack recalls. “We recovered nothing”

They began replacing their belongings as soon as they could. That’s when insult added to injury. “I bought the minimum amount [of insurance] I could get, trying to save money,” McDonald admits. They’re living in a smaller rental now. “We had to cut back on a lot of things, like buying used furniture. I don’t mind used furniture, that’s not the point. What makes me sick is thinking of what’s irreplaceable.”

What To Do:

Wildfires can’t be predicted the way hurricanes or blizzards can. David Miskus, a drought-monitoring meteorologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says overall, we’re expecting more intense dry spells, more warm spells. The closer your home is to the range or the brush, the more at risk you are.

Clear away brush. It's a fire hazard. Instead of watering to maintain lush green areas, make sure to remove brush.

Gravel is your friend. Create a buffer zone between your home and potential fires with strategically placed gravel and other rock.

Don’t light fires during a burning ban. Sounds obvious – and yet again and again, wildfires begin when someone does this.

Don Frank was sitting in his law office on the ninth floor of a building in downtown Springfield, Massachusetts. This particular day several years ago started out hot and sunny. But it was turning peculiar. The view out his window was Frank’s first clue.

“Way out over the Berkshires I saw this cloud,” Frank remembers. “It was moving quickly. My office mates turned on the radio. We heard there was a crazy tornado situation coming through Massachusetts, but somehow the idea of being affected by a tornado seemed implausible.”

After all, tornadoes happen in big-sky and prairie country, and in the South - not in New England!

“I could see what was now clearly a tornado forming. It was coming right over the river, which is a block and a half from my office,” Frank recalls. “I still wasn’t worried, because we all know tornadoes never affect people in Springfield. I thought it might knock down power lines, and if I end up stuck someplace, I’d rather it be home.’”

What Frank did next was the opposite of what you should do during a tornado warning. He got into his car. He even offered his office mate a ride. “As we drove out of the parking lot, we came into very, very high winds – but I was still pretty sure nothing bad would happen to me!”

But bad things happen to everyone, no matter where they live, right when they least expect it.

“The tornado went up and over my car,” Frank says. “In a second my car was completely engulfed in debris. My office mate sort of slid down in her seat. I shut my eyes, and at that moment I heard a giant kaboom! My back window pulled out with the pressure differential. Stuff was blowing into my car. As fast as the tornado hit – literally three seconds – it left.”

Frank saw a steel girder from a building lying across the street about 20 feet from his car. He counts himself incredibly fortunate – he was unhurt and was even able to repair his car. But something shifted for him that day. After he got home he tried to shrug off the events of the afternoon and met some friends for a bike ride.

“We were just rolling out on our bikes when that same freaky tornado-like wind blew,” he says. “I was obviously reliving the trauma. Suddenly, I had barely enough strength to bike home.” He no longer operates under the assumption that bad things couldn’t happen to him.

What To Do:

Tornadoes can happen almost anywhere – even in New England. Tornadoes are hard to predict, and there is often too little time to get out of their way. Here are some wise precautions you can take.

Get a good storm door. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has identified certain storm doors that can withstand 250-mile-per-hour winds. If you live in Tornado Alley - from the Rockies to Appalachians - install one of those.

Strengthen your garage. A garage door can be especially vulnerable during high winds. If your garage is attached, that spells trouble for your whole house. A reinforced, windowless door is your best bet. You also can install vertical bracing that helps to reinforce the door.

Secure your windows. If you’ve heard you should open windows during a tornado, you’ve heard wrong. Instead, investigate DIY systems that clip plywood to your windows – no nailing necessary.

Consider installing a safe room. If you live in an area prone to tornadoes, this might be the best move you can make. It won’t protect your home but will protect you and your family – and that’s what’s truly irreplaceable.

Patrick and Tammy Stewart's cross country move was wrenching. "We were leaving our first home. We had bought as a fixer-upper and I literally painted every single inch of every single wall,” Tammy says. “It was our first house, and we loved it.” But career opportunities beckoned, so in January 2010 the Stewarts rented out their beloved east coast home and drove across country to California.

Almost two years later, when they were between tenants, Tammy noticed news reports predicting a particularly bad East Coast storm. The Stewarts had several 70 year old trees on their property and feared something could go awry.

Sure enough, the morning the storm made landfall, Tammy got an email from her old neighbor. Tammy recalls the subject line said, "It’s not too bad!” Attached was a photo of a tree that had fallen. The neig

hbor described it tipping in slow-motion, right into the house.

The Stewarts panicked. “We were 3,000 miles away, and this was an emergency," Tammy recalls. "What were we going to do? We had to get the tree off the house to prevent further damage..and new tenants were arriving in just two days! The first thing we did was call State Farm, then the tree guy.”

Acting quickly, the Stewarts’ agent assessed the damage. The tree was chopped up and hauled away. A contractor came out to make sure the house was structurally sound. Thankfully, it was. The Stewarts were lucky. Really lucky because, as Tammy admits, they didn’t really know what was insured.

“We got the insurance we were supposed to have as property owners. We didn’t know what was actually in our policy,” she says, “What was covered, what wasn’t. I didn’t even know what our deductible was!”

Tammy is glad the event forced her and Patrick to become more informed. That tends to be the case for a lot of people. “You get what you’re supposed to get with the thought that nothing will really happen," Tammy said. "It was eye-opening. We were so lucky we had no flooding, because I know now we weren’t covered for that.”

In the midst of the hassle, the Stewarts haven’t lost sight of the silver linings. “We had never exercised our policy,” she says. “With State Farm it went really smoothly - even with us in California. We were surprised too, given the damage back [on the East Coast], that our relatively small claim was handled so quickly.”

What To Do:

Hurricanes and strong storms pack a major punch. It’s important to be prepared. As with any dangerous storm or peril, listen to and react appropriately to evacuation and/or safety messages delivered by local weather and law enforcement authorities.

Prepare for high winds. Add window protection and reinforce entry and garage doors. Pull all lawn furniture, planters and garbage cans inside. Anything not tied down is a potential projectile.

Stock up. Make sure you’ve got batteries, flashlights, and enough water and nonperishable food to last a few days. Fill large containers with water for washing and flushing, and gas up your vehicles.

Look into flood insurance. If you don’t live in a floodplain, chances are you’re not covered for flooding. Most flood insurance is provided by the National Flood Insurance Program, not covered under standard homeowners policies.
