More than 35,300 insurance claims were filed with State Farm in the week following the Laura’s landfall. Residents across Louisiana and Texas continue reporting damage to their homes and vehicles as impacted areas become more accessible. State Farm catastrophe response drone teams are assessing damage for customers across Lake Charles and other impacted areas.

Please continue to monitor local information. When it is safe to do so, make (or have a contractor make) temporary repairs to prevent further damage to your home or property. Save receipts if you purchase items such as tarps, plywood or other repair supplies. Take photos/videos of damage for claim documentation.

• Avoid driving if possible. If you have to travel, turn around if the road is flooded or blocked by debris.

Ronnie Glass sat on the porch watching the clouds roll in. She could hear the rumbling thunder of the approaching storm on the other side of the lake.

She thought she had plenty of time. But out of what she thought was a safe sky came a bolt of lightning that split a nearby tree. She was lucky. The dropped limb didn’t damage her property and she learned a new level of respect for storms.

“I’ve always watched storms in wonderment,” she said. “They can be so beautiful. But they are also powerful and dangerous. I couldn't get inside fast enough. I have a lot more respect for them now.”

According to the National Weather Service, on average 26 people were killed by lightning strikes in the United States each year in the last decade.

Greater lightning awareness has led to the numbers coming down slightly. In 2019, there were 20 direct lightning fatalities, the lowest since record-keeping began in 1941.

Lightning can strike 5 to 10 miles from a thunderstorm. The Insurance Information Institute (III) offers the "30/30 Rule" for personal safety:

• If it takes less than 30 seconds after you see lightning to hear the thunder, you should get indoors and stay there for 30 minutes.

Lightning Strikes Becoming More Costly

According to III, the number of homeowners insurance claims from lightning strikes in the United States also fell in 2019. But, the average cost insurers paid on those claims increased by 11 percent between 2017 and 2019.

The average State Farm claim increased to $11,500 (up from $10,400). The rise is due in part to more “smart homes” and their interconnected electronic systems. If lighting strikes the network, it can damage scores of devices and appliances at once.

Ways to protect your home:

• Install a lightning protection system. You may receive a credit on your homeowners insurance. According to Underwriters Laboratories, 99 percent are effective in preventing lightning damage. The components include:
  • Lightning rods – divert the strike of the lightning from the home directly into the ground.
  • Surge protectors – adding surge protectors can help keep appliances and electronics safe.
• If you're home when as a storm hits, unplug electronics and appliances. (Do not attempt to unplug electronics/appliances during the height a storm.)
• Check your homeowners insurance policy. Not all insurance plans are the same. Make sure yours will cover damage done to your home and/or appliances and electronics.

On the evening of June 9, 2015, veterinarian, Kenneth Kimbrough, wrapped up his last appointment, said goodbye to his staff, and went home.

“It was business as usual, until the fire department called. Kimbrough Animal Hospital was in flames.”

The doctor and his wife arrived on the scene to find their clinic fully engulfed.

“My biggest fear - the animals inside,” said Kimbrough. “I ran to the kennel. People were shouting, ‘It’s dangerous, don’t go in!’ But I couldn’t stop. I began taking animals out. Started administering CPR on the lawn. I had to get their lungs full of something besides smoke. I had to turn it around.”

Thirty-eight animals perished that night. Only two boxers survived. Officials deemed Kimbrough Animal Hospital a total loss.

“I shared this devastating reality with my clients and the community,” said Kimbrough. “It’s numbing.”

Rebuilding from the ashes

The next day Kimbrough called his State Farm Agent, Dave Powell.

“When I began working with Dr. Kimbrough in 2000, I looked him in the eye and said, ‘On your worst day, I’m going to be there for you.’ That day had arrived,” said Powell.

Together, the pair surveyed the scene, met with the claim specialist and reviewed his policy. While the cause of the fire was never determined, officials suspected it may have started electrically, in a back office.

“As a small business owner, it’s imperative to get back up and running,” Powell explained. “Dr. Kimbrough’s coverage included business interruption which meant State Farm would reimburse his loss of income, and also provides coverage to keep his team employed during the period of restoration. His policy also covered building contents, which allowed him to buy new equipment.”

With the help of State Farm, Kimbrough Animal Hospital began to recover. The old hospital was leveled and the rebuild began. With construction underway, Kimbrough converted his nearby pet grooming facility into a mini animal hospital. Portable buildings were moved onto the grounds so staff could help more people.

“Thank goodness for small business insurance, which made it possible,” said Kimbrough. “Dave, my agent, was with me every step of the way.”

A new chapter

In March 2017, the NEW Kimbrough Animal Hospital opened its doors.

“Our former building was 4,400 square feet. Our new facility is 12,000 square feet,” said Kimbrough. “This allows us to serve customers, provide daycare and grooming, and help more pets. We also have a Fear Free certified doctor on staff, which allows us better serve the physical and emotional wellbeing of animals.”

More than two years later, the clinic is back in action. And while Kimbrough says the memories of that fateful June night will never fade, he’s grateful for the support of his friends, neighbors and the Texas community.

“Thank goodness I could do this. With Dave as my State Farm agent, I had the right coverage, my needs were met and I was guided through the process. Kimbrough Animal Hospital got a second chance.”

“I consider it an honor to be a servant leader for our small business clientele,” said Powell. “Staying in touch to ensure the coverage they have continues to meet their evolving needs ensures people are secure. Helping, it’s what we do.”

West Virginia tops the list for the twelfth consecutive year. However, likelihood of having an insurance claim involving a deer was one in 46 for West Virginia drivers — down three points from last year..

The chance of hitting a deer, or other large animal, doubles in the fall. The months with the most claims are November, October and December, in that order. There is also an increased risk of collision with deer around dawn and dusk. Drivers should be engaged, alert and on the lookout at all times. You never know when you may need to react to a deer or other obstacle that may cross your travel path.

No matter where you live, or what time of day you are driving, it’s important to remain alert. Keep your eyes up and focused on the road. This helps you take action in the event a deer is suddenly in your path. Other tips to help keep drivers safe include:

• Slow down, particularly at dusk and dawn.
• If you see one deer, be prepared for more deer to cross the road.
• Pay attention to deer crossing signs.
• Always buckle up — every trip, every time.
• Use your high beams to see farther, except when there is oncoming traffic.
• Brake if you can, but avoid swerving. This can result in a more severe crash.
• Remain focused on the road. Scan for hazards, including animals.
• Avoid distractions. Devices or eating might cause you to miss seeing an animal.
• Do not rely on products such as deer whistles. They are not proven effective.
• If riding a motorcycle, always wear protective gear. Keep focus on the road ahead.

Methodology: State Farm is the nation’s leading auto insurer. Using its claims data and state licensed driver counts from the Federal Highway Administration, it calculated the chances of any single American motorist striking a deer, elk, or moose or caribou between July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018 — in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The data has been projected for the insurance industry as a whole, based on the State Farm personal vehicle market penetration within each state. The State Farm data is based on comprehensive and collision claims only. Claims involving policyholders with liability insurance coverage only are not included.

The 15th annual State Farm deer claim study helps define that danger for drivers. It ranks states by the potential likelihood a driver has of hitting a large animal, like deer, elk, moose or caribou.

This year's study has some good news for West Virginia drivers. WV continues to lead the nation in the likelihood of having an insurance claim involving a deer. However, their one out of every 43 drivers stat represents a 4.7 percent decrease from 2016.

Unfortunately, there were some increases in likelyhood among the top 10 over last year's study. Montana drivers have a one in 57 chance of a collision. This is a 1.8 percent increase. Pennsylvania drivers have a one in 63 chance of a crash, a 6.3 percent increase from 2016.

The top 10 states where a driver was most likely to have a large animal claim remain fairly consistent. Wisconsin moved into the top five, swapping positions with South Dakota. Wyoming moved into the top 10 at number eight. North Dakota moved up to number 10.  South Carolina is no longer in the top 10. Thirteen states had no change in ranking.

Mating season more than doubles the likelihood of collision with a large animal. So be especially alert during the months of October, November and December - deer mating season. Whether you hit a large animal, or it jumps into the side of your vehicle, such collisions can cause significant injuries and property damage.
