Prentiss says his dad always encouraged him to pursue a college education." src="//content.presspage.com/uploads/1441/500_use-prentissandhisdad1-720432.jpg?x=1548882260920" style="margin: 5px 10px; width: 50%; height: 25%; float: right;" />

Treat people with respect.

When life gets you down, laugh.

A college degree is a must.

"I learned it all from my dad," smiled Prentiss. "He's a people person, and that rubbed off on me. His dream, for me to pursue higher education, has too." Instead of going to college, Prentiss’s dad joined the workforce, serving as the primary breadwinner for Prentiss and his mother.

"Dad taught me the value of hardwork, and always reminded me to stay in school," said Prentiss. "He wanted me to go farther than he did."

The years passed. The Bullard family kept busy. Life was happy. Then, in 2016, everything turned upside down. “I was walking to school when I got an urgent call from my mom,” said Prentiss. "I’ll never forget her words: “Your dad’s been hit by a car.”

"We rushed to the hospital. Dad's injuries were so severe. He passed away a short time later." Prentiss Bullard senior was just 49 years old.

With grieving hearts, Prentiss and his mother were left to figure out how to move forward. But without an adequate life insurance plan, questions about how to pay for bills, make rent, or even plan for college remained unanswered. “We hardly had time to process everything,” said Prentiss. “It was so stressful. On top of it all, I was worried I might not be able to go to school.”

Prentiss got a job and started applying for scholarships, including the Life Lessons Scholarship from the nonprofit, Life Happens. With the support of State Farm, Life Happens helps educate families with insurance and financial planning. “I did everything I could to take the load off my mom, while also making sure my dad’s wish – that I go to college – came true.” In 2018 Prentiss got a phone call that left him beaming from ear to ear...

“I learned I was the grand prize winner of the Life Lessons scholarship. I was thrilled! The happiness I felt that day, I still feel now. My life is changed.”

Today, Prentiss is a student at George Washington University, pursuing a degree in fine arts. “Whenever I’m taking a test, doing homework, or studying for exams – I think of dad. I think of how much he and my mom love me. I want to make them proud, so I work hard. I’m aspiring to be a photojournalist. The opportunity to go to college is truly a gift.”

Prentiss continues to live out the lessons his father taught him. He says they’re lessons everyone should remember. And, there’s one more piece of advice he wants to share:

“Protect the ones you love, make sure they’re provided for with a life insurance plan. Everyone should make this a priority,” said Prentiss. “Life has a lot of twists and turns. Accidents happen. Knowing you’re covered means peace of mind - so you can keep enjoying your journey.”

<img alt="“Protect the ones you love, make sure they’re provided for with a life insurance plan,” said Prentiss. “Everyone should make this a priority. Learn how you can "Insure Your Love".

Losing a parent is difficult at any stage of life. But for young adults just starting out, it can be devastating.

“Losing my mother has taken an emotional and financial toll on my entire life,” said Jesaura Peralta, a senior at Laboratory Institute of Merchandising (LIM) College in New York City. “It’s the biggest tragedy I’ve ever faced, but it’s also made me stronger, determined and goal-oriented.

“When my mom – my best friend – lost her battle with cancer, her funeral and other expenses were a complete financial struggle for my family. She had no life insurance and there was no plan for any of this.”

Jesaura, one of two college students who recently earned scholarships from State Farm® through a program called Life Lessons by Life Happens®, worked up to three jobs at one time to get through school and make ends meet after her mother’s death.

Her mother, Ercilia Alvarez, came to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic in 1984 and raised Jesaura and her older brother as a single parent. “She came to a new country, made a good living and was successful,” said Jesaura. “She also left a loving impact on every person she met.

“Then in 2013, my mom became very ill, eventually diagnosed with stage 4 duodenal cancer,” she said. “When she died later that year, my life changed forever. If she had life insurance, we could’ve grieved for her without worrying about finances every step of the way.”

While no one wants to think about leaving children or young adults behind with no financial resources, it happens. When it does, it can change the path of their young lives.

Life insurance can make a difference in how your loved ones live the rest of their lives if the unexpected happens to you and they are left behind.

Young families, single parents or anyone with doubts about how their kids would get by without them are the ones who need life insurance most.

“One day I hope to become half the woman my mother was and continue to make her proud,” Jesaura said.

Life insurance can't bring a parent back, but it can make the future easier to navigate. And it’s not as expensive or as complicated as you think. There’s a policy to fit every budget, and an insurance agent can help you find coverage that’s right for you.

Remember, life insurance is for people who live. Insure Your Love this February, the month of love.
