But, it wasn’t only for them. They wanted to spend week-ends boating, fishing, and spending time with family, with the hopes of someday enjoying time with grandchildren at the home. They recently became grandparents. They hoped the memories of these family times would become a legacy of love beyond words.

Their youngest daughter, State Farm Agent, Beth Moloughney, who gave birth to the first grandchild only 6 weeks earlier, recalls their excitement as the closing date drew near. She also recalls a very important decision her parents made.

“My parents were faithful and longtime State Farm policyholders. Both my sister and I have had life insurance since we were infants,” Beth said.

Martin and Dorothy approached their State Farm Agent, James Spera to place insurance on the home they were buying in three days. At that meeting, Mr. Spera presented them with additional life insurance quotes to cover the mortgage on their dream home. Martin, feeling they already had enough, said to Mr. Spera, “Every time we come in here you try to sell us more life insurance.” Mr. Spera replied it was his job to make sure that they were properly covered. After some back and forth, they purchased two policies.

The Sonnenbergs left with the binding receipts and went off to close on their dream home. They named it “The Shore House.”

This should be the end of this fairytale story, but like every fairytale, there is some tragedy. This tragedy was earth-shattering.

Three days after closing on their “dream home,” Martin died suddenly. Shattering the family’s world and Martin & Dorothy’s dream of growing old together in The Shore House. But because of the life insurance, the home was paid in full, and Dorothy never had to worry about that property.

At first, Beth was reluctant to spend time there. She felt it was a “death house.” “My Dad died for this,” she thought. But her grandmother sat her down and explained the best way to honor his memory was to do exactly what he had envisioned with the home.

Dorothy kept that home for the next 30 years where all the grandchildren spent their summers learning how to boat, fish, and enjoy all that is the Jersey Shore. It was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy in 2011.

Life insurance changes lives in many ways. Not just the immediate, but sometimes setting us on the path we are meant to be on.

“This is why I am here today as a State Farm Agent. I was able to see firsthand the value of life insurance and how it has a generational impact and leaves a legacy of love beyond words. ” Beth said.

Visit https://www.statefarm.com/ and https://lifehappens.org/ for more information.

stories,State Farm,policyholders,Kids,life insurance,life Happens,love,Agent,customers,Life

<pp:caseid>437943</pp:caseid>

Bloomington, IL, February 26, 2021 – In 2020 and for the second straight year, State Farm property and casualty insurance companies experienced growth in auto policies while also reporting lower auto lines earned premium. The decrease in auto earned premium reflects a focus on returning value to customers in the form of overall lower premiums. During 2020, in response to customers driving less and claims experience reflecting that change in behavior, State Farm rolled out the Good Neighbor Relief Program. As part of that program, State Farm paid approximately $2 billion in policyholder dividends to State Farm Mutual auto customers and provided premium relief for other auto customers. State Farm Mutual and the auto insurance affiliates also lowered premiums by an average of 11% nationally, saving customers another $2.2 billion over a six-month policy period.

State Farm also experienced growth in other lines of business, and the State Farm life insurance companies paid out nearly $600 million in dividends to policyholders and ended 2020 with nearly a trillion dollars of individual life insurance in force. As the number one Auto and Homeowners insurer in the U.S. and a leader in individual life insurance, State Farm is committed to serving its policyholders and remains a strong choice for insurance and financial services needs.

“We strive to help more people in more ways. In an unprecedented year like 2020, we focus on our core mission to help people manage the risks of everyday life, recover from the unexpected, and realize their dreams,” said Senior Vice President, Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer Jon Farney. “The Good Neighbor Relief Program is a testament of our commitment to our policyholders and communities. Whether premium relief, dividends to State Farm Mutual auto customers, payment flexibility or philanthropic efforts in the communities we live and work, we're focused on relief and recovery efforts.”

The State Farm P-C group of companies reported earned premium of $65.1 billion, a combined underwriting gain of $1.9 billion, and paid $1.9 billion in dividends to policyholders. This result compared to an underwriting gain of $777 million on earned premium of $64.8 billion in 2019. The 2020 underwriting results reflect lower auto lines incurred claims offset by returns of value to customers in the form of lower premiums, along with an increase in homeowners incurred claims. The increase in homeowners incurred claims during 2020 was due to significant catastrophe activity across the country. The 2020 underwriting gain, combined with dividends to policyholders, and investment and other income of $4.6 billion, resulted in a P-C pre-tax operating gain of $4.5 billion, which was $1.2 billion lower than 2019. Total revenue, which includes premium revenue, earned investment income and realized capital gains (losses) was $78.9 billion for 2020 compared to $79.4 billion for 2019. State Farm reported net income of $3.7 billion in 2020 compared to $5.6 billion of net income in 2019. The net worth for the State Farm group ended the year at $126.1 billion compared with $116.2 billion at year-end 2019. The change includes a significant increase in the value of the P-C companies’ unaffiliated stock portfolio, driven by increases in the U.S. equities market.

The State Farm insurance operations consist of eleven P-C companies and two life companies, each of which is managed on an individual affiliate level. The P-C companies are primarily engaged in automobile, health, homeowners, commercial multiple peril (CMP) and reinsurance lines of business. The life companies are primarily engaged in individual life insurance and annuity business. The State Farm group makes third party mutual funds and third party banking products available through affiliated State Farm companies that act as intermediaries between the third parties and State Farm customers. State Farm provides insurance and financial services products across over 84 million policies and accounts.

Auto – The State Farm auto insurance business represented 62 percent of the P-C companies’ combined net written premium. Earned premium was $41.3 billion. Incurred claims and loss adjustment expenses were $27.6 billion and all other underwriting expenses totaled $10.1 billion. The underwriting gain was $3.5 billion and dividends to policyholders totaled $1.9 billion.

Comparable 2019 figures were: earned premium, $41.5 billion; incurred claims and loss adjustment expenses, $32.0 billion; all other underwriting expenses, $10.3 billion; underwriting loss, $764 million.

Homeowners, CMP, Other – The net written premium for the remainder of the State Farm P-C business represented 36 percent of the P-C companies’ combined net written premium. Earned premium was $22.9 billion. Incurred claims and loss adjustment expenses were $18.6 billion and all other underwriting expenses totaled $5.9 billion. The underwriting loss was $1.6 billion.

Comparable 2019 figures were: earned premium, $22.4 billion; incurred claims and loss adjustment expenses, $14.8 billion; all other underwriting expenses, $5.6 billion; underwriting gain, $2.0 billion.

Health – The individual health insurance operations for State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company reported an underwriting loss of $24 million, excluding the change in the premium deficiency reserve. The decrease in property-casualty (P-C) earned premium reflects a focus on returning value to customers in the form of lower premiums when appropriate. The State Farm life insurance companies paid out nearly $600 million in dividends to policyholders and ended 2019 with $959 billion in total life insurance in force. As the number one Auto and Homeowners insurer in the U.S. and a leader in individual life insurance, State Farm is committed to serving its policyholders and remains a strong choice for insurance and financial services needs.

“Our focus of putting customers first for nearly 98 years continues to underscore our position as the national leader in protecting people. Each year we help millions of our customers recover from the unexpected and live life confidently with the protection we provide,” said Senior Vice President, Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer Jon Farney. “Our financial strength, along with our local presence and broad product offerings have earned us the loyalty of our customers and are the reasons more customers are choosing State Farm. Our agents, their teams and our employees are committed to providing customers and communities with the products and service they expect from their Good Neighbor.”

The State Farm P-C group of companies reported a combined underwriting gain of $777 million in 2019 on earned premium of $64.8 billion, compared to an underwriting gain of $1.7 billion on earned premium of $65.2 billion in 2018. The 2019 underwriting gain, combined with investment and other income of $5.0 billion, resulted in a P-C pre-tax operating gain of $5.7 billion. The lower underwriting gain in 2019 was driven by higher losses and lower earned premium compared to 2018. Total revenue, which includes premium revenue, earned investment income and realized capital gains (losses) was

$79.4 billion for 2019 compared to $81.7 billion for 2018. State Farm reported net income of $5.6 billion in 2019, compared to $8.8 billion of net income in 2018. The net worth for the State Farm group ended the year at $116.2 billion compared with $100.9 billion at year-end 2018. The change was primarily due to an increase in the value of the P-C companies’ unaffiliated stock portfolio, driven by increases in the U.S. equities market.

The State Farm group also provides banking products and makes mutual funds available through affiliated companies.

Treat people with respect.

When life gets you down, laugh.

A college degree is a must.

"I learned it all from my dad," smiled Prentiss. "He's a people person, and that rubbed off on me. His dream, for me to pursue higher education, has too." Instead of going to college, Prentiss’s dad joined the workforce, serving as the primary breadwinner for Prentiss and his mother.

"Dad taught me the value of hardwork, and always reminded me to stay in school," said Prentiss. "He wanted me to go farther than he did."

The years passed. The Bullard family kept busy. Life was happy. Then, in 2016, everything turned upside down. “I was walking to school when I got an urgent call from my mom,” said Prentiss. "I’ll never forget her words: “Your dad’s been hit by a car.”

"We rushed to the hospital. Dad's injuries were so severe. He passed away a short time later." Prentiss Bullard senior was just 49 years old.

With grieving hearts, Prentiss and his mother were left to figure out how to move forward. But without an adequate life insurance plan, questions about how to pay for bills, make rent, or even plan for college remained unanswered. “We hardly had time to process everything,” said Prentiss. “It was so stressful. On top of it all, I was worried I might not be able to go to school.”

Prentiss got a job and started applying for scholarships, including the Life Lessons Scholarship from the nonprofit, Life Happens. With the support of State Farm, Life Happens helps educate families with insurance and financial planning. “I did everything I could to take the load off my mom, while also making sure my dad’s wish – that I go to college – came true.” In 2018 Prentiss got a phone call that left him beaming from ear to ear...

“I learned I was the grand prize winner of the Life Lessons scholarship. I was thrilled! The happiness I felt that day, I still feel now. My life is changed.”

Today, Prentiss is a student at George Washington University, pursuing a degree in fine arts. “Whenever I’m taking a test, doing homework, or studying for exams – I think of dad. I think of how much he and my mom love me. I want to make them proud, so I work hard. I’m aspiring to be a photojournalist. The opportunity to go to college is truly a gift.”

Prentiss continues to live out the lessons his father taught him. He says they’re lessons everyone should remember. And, there’s one more piece of advice he wants to share:

“Protect the ones you love, make sure they’re provided for with a life insurance plan. Everyone should make this a priority,” said Prentiss. “Life has a lot of twists and turns. Accidents happen. Knowing you’re covered means peace of mind - so you can keep enjoying your journey.”

<img alt="“Protect the ones you love, make sure they’re provided for with a life insurance plan,” said Prentiss. “Everyone should make this a priority.
<pp:caseid>324790</pp:caseid>

In 2018, State Farm experienced a property-casualty underwriting gain, as well as increases in total revenue, net income and net worth. As the number one Auto and Homeowners insurer in the U.S., State Farm remains committed to serving its policyholders. The State Farm property-casualty (P-C) group of companies reported a combined underwriting gain of $1.7 billion in 2018 on earned premium of $65.2 billion, compared to an underwriting loss of $6.5 billion on earned premium of $63.9 billion in 2017. The 2018 underwriting gain, combined with investment and other income of $4.7 billion, resulted in a P-C pre-tax operating gain of $6.3 billion. The underwriting gain in 2018 was driven by lower losses, which included a decrease in catastrophe losses compared to 2017.

The net worth for the State Farm group ended the year at $100.9 billion compared with $97.0 billion at year-end 2017. The increase was primarily due to the P-C pre-tax operating gain, which was partially offset by a decrease in the value of the P-C companies’ unaffiliated stock portfolio, driven by declines in the U.S. equities market.

“As a mutual company, we strive to achieve results that allow us to maintain the financial strength necessary to serve our customers and deliver on the promises we make to be there when the unexpected happens,” said Senior Vice President, Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer Jon Farney. “While 2018 was a profitable year for State Farm, we view our financial results over a longer period of time. Over the last three years, we have increased our financial strength even with a combined underwriting loss, all while helping millions of our customers recover from the unexpected and live life confidently with the protection that we provide. We have been able to achieve these results because we manage our business responsibly for the long-term, and our agents, their teams and our employees are committed to serving our customers and our communities.”

Total revenue, which includes premium revenue, earned investment income and realized capital gains (losses) was $81.7 billion for 2018 compared to $78.3 billion for 2017. State Farm reported net income of $8.8 billion in 2018, compared to $2.2 billion of net income in 2017. The State Farm group also provides banking products and makes mutual funds available through affiliated companies. State Farm provides insurance and financial services products across nearly 83 million policies and accounts.

The 2017 underwriting loss, combined with investment and other income of $4.8 billion, resulted in a P-C pre-tax operating loss of $1.7 billion. Learn how you can "Insure Your Love".

Losing a parent is difficult at any stage of life. But for young adults just starting out, it can be devastating.

“Losing my mother has taken an emotional and financial toll on my entire life,” said Jesaura Peralta, a senior at Laboratory Institute of Merchandising (LIM) College in New York City. “It’s the biggest tragedy I’ve ever faced, but it’s also made me stronger, determined and goal-oriented.

“When my mom – my best friend – lost her battle with cancer, her funeral and other expenses were a complete financial struggle for my family. She had no life insurance and there was no plan for any of this.”

Jesaura, one of two college students who recently earned scholarships from State Farm® through a program called Life Lessons by Life Happens®, worked up to three jobs at one time to get through school and make ends meet after her mother’s death.

Her mother, Ercilia Alvarez, came to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic in 1984 and raised Jesaura and her older brother as a single parent. “She came to a new country, made a good living and was successful,” said Jesaura. “She also left a loving impact on every person she met.

“Then in 2013, my mom became very ill, eventually diagnosed with stage 4 duodenal cancer,” she said. “When she died later that year, my life changed forever. If she had life insurance, we could’ve grieved for her without worrying about finances every step of the way.”

While no one wants to think about leaving children or young adults behind with no financial resources, it happens. When it does, it can change the path of their young lives.

Life insurance can make a difference in how your loved ones live the rest of their lives if the unexpected happens to you and they are left behind.

Young families, single parents or anyone with doubts about how their kids would get by without them are the ones who need life insurance most.

For Roberto Loera, moving to the U.S. from Mexico was a dream come true. It meant new opportunity and providing a better life for his family back home. Settling in Colorado, he spent years working in construction and ski resorts to support his wife, Maria, and two sons, Roberto Jr. and Abel.

“His children were everything to him,” said Maria. “His family meant the world to him.”

But shortly after his family was able to join him in Colorado, Roberto died of a brain tumor at the age of 47. Just two weeks after he earned his U.S. citizenship, one of the proudest days of his life.

“I tell my children that their father is gone, but he left them a chance for a future that many others don’t have,” added Maria.

When Maria and the boys received U.S. visas to come to the U.S., Roberto shared the good news with Leila Martinez. She is staff member in State Farm Agent Will Comerford’s office.

Knowing that taking care of his family was Roberto’s number one priority, Leila asked him if he had ever thought about life insurance. She explained how it would protect his family if anything ever happened to him.

He bought a life insurance policy that day for less than $20 a month.

“People always think, ‘It’s not going to be me,’” said Leila. “Roberto didn’t think it was going to be him. But he got life insurance anyway to protect his family.”

About a year after his family joined him in Colorado, Roberto began having headaches. They grew worse every day. Doctors discovered the headaches were the result of a dangerous brain tumor and they removed as much of it as possible. Roberto went back to work, but nine months later the tumor returned. Even worse, it had spread.

The doctors gave him just a few months to live. There was nothing more they could do for him.

Thanks to the life insurance Roberto bought before their arrival, Maria and the boys were able to stay in the U.S. while she looked for work. Money from the policy helped pay for funeral costs, medical bills and day-to-day expenses. It even helped Maria set up college savings accounts for the boys.

“Roberto’s life insurance was such a blessing,” says Maria. “It’s something every family should have.”

stories,Life,life insurance,LIAM,Life Insurance Awareness Month,CO,Colorado,Lopez,protect your family,gift of life insurance,brain tumor,US Citizen

Looking at Bobby Petrocelli, you would never know a drunk driver crashed through his home, killing his wife and changing his life forever. Rather than choosing anger, Bobby chose to move forward with his life and embrace forgiveness.

Bobby didn't blame the driver. Instead, he asked what happened in their life that led them to numb their pain with alcohol.

As a high school teacher and coach, Bobby loves teaching youth. This passion inspired him to take his story to high schools, hoping to make a positive influence on students’ lives. At the schools, he shares his story, and hopes after hearing his experiences students will choose a safer path.

“We have all gone through struggles and have been in that place where it seems there is no way out,” says Josh Miles, senior in Saint Petersburg, Florida who has seen Bobby speak. “The answer is never to give up on ourselves, because we all have value and deserve equal opportunities. At the end of the day, our physical appearance doesn't define who we really are.”

After the crash, Bobby realized life is a constant, never-ending shift between successes and failures. We experience hardship both because of our faults and because of the faults of others.

"The greatest gift in this world is to serve others by helping them become who they are meant to be,” Bobby says about his presentations, that are supported by State Farm. “My desire is each student walks away with understanding and empowering their VIP."

“I try to accept everyone, no matter what,” shared Kevin Jimenez, senior at Hialeah Gardens High. “I believe we are all the same in one way or another. Unfortunately, I know a lot of people that don’t. I’ve been blessed to have a good past. Bobby made me feel better about how I think. I matter and so does everyone else.”

Bobby encourages people to use their life experiences to become stronger, more confident, more resilient individuals. The alternative, he says, is letting those experiences drain all their hope and energy. The choice is theirs. Through raising students’ awareness of this choice, Bobby is making a huge impact on student lives.

“By no means was it easy for Bobby to put someone that killed his wife behind him,” says Aundre Fredericks, ShoreCrest Prep School student. “He understood there's a lot of broken people, but that they need to know, as we all need a reminder, that we matter."

If there is one message Bobby and his students want you to walk away with, it is that even though you can’t choose whether or not bad things will happen in your life, you have complete control of how it affects you from that point on.

After Uyntha Duncan's husband Don passed away in 2000, she threw herself into volunteering to help with the grieving process. It helped her overcome the loss, and her community benefited from the service.

She received several awards for her volunteerism. Then, in recognition of her service, strength, and the positive impact she made despite the loss of her 40-year life partner, she was named a State Farm® Embrace Life recipient in 2009.

She was able to focus on volunteer work because of their careful preparation and guidance from State Farm Agent Monte McCunniff (now Brad McCunniff's State Farm Agency).

"Without the careful planning Don and I did with Monte to get the right life insurance policy, I would have never been able to volunteer the time that led to the Embrace Life recognition," Uyntha says. "I didn't need to think about going back to work or being strapped for money. State Farm worked with us to ensure we were prepared."

That preparation continues to pay off years later. Because Uyntha and Don planned for the future and were careful with their money, Uyntha was able to invest her $10,000 Embrace Life award.

"After I received the award, I knew I would save it and donate it to some cause—I didn't know what that cause would be just yet," said Uyntha. "Our philosophy had always been to save and make good choices. When I won the award, I felt it was reward for saving and being prepared."

Uyntha is a nurse by trade and throughout her career worked in different emergency rooms. She knows the importance of a fully-equipped emergency facility. Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, IA tapped that expertise and asked her to co-chair fundraising for a new emergency wing.

Feeling she needed to demonstrate her leadership and set a precedent, she decided to donate her $10,000 to help fund the new facility. In addition - again because of the plan and investment she, Don and Monte put in place - she was able to donate an additional $5,000 of her own money.

"Uyntha is a true spirit of philanthropy. She can see a need in our community and she not only gives financially but contributes her time and talents ultimately making a positive difference. With her help, we are now able to serve acute patients in a state-of-the-art facility now and for years to come," said Heather Bremer-Miller, Executive Director of Covenant and Sartori Foundations.

Uyntha has been a State Farm customer for 30 years. She and Don chose State Farm because friends and family highly recommended the company when they first got married. That choice turned out to be integral in planning for their future.

"We had three children in college at the same time. We started college funds for each when they were born. We added more to them and it grew," she says. "One of the biggest accomplishments my husband and I achieved was they all got through college debt-free."

The couple's belief in the importance of education now extends beyond the family. A scholarship Uyntha established at Hawkeye Community College in Cedar Falls has allowed a dozen students to each attend the college free for two years as long as they maintain a 3.0 GPA.

Don and Uyntha's philosophy has always been to save and make good choices. She encourages others to set long-range goals and stick to that plan too. She credits her success and ability to give back to the help she received from State Farm.

"It's so important to plan when you're young. It's good to be careful with your money and not spend everything you have."

She wishes more people would sit down and plan for their future.

"We were a couple of farm kids and always careful. Save for a rainy day because you don't know when there's a flood coming or when your barn is going to burn down."

Every day, Uyntha gets up and tells herself to "make the world a better place today" - a sure way to fully embrace life.

This expanded alliance will allow State Farm agents the ability to market Blue Cross and Blue Shield health insurance in 19 states.

More than 7,650 State Farm agents, and their licensed representatives, will work with independent BCBS companies in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Maine, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New York, Ohio, South Carolina, Virginia, and Wisconsin.*

The two leading insurance brands first aligned in November 2014, offering consumers the opportunity to understand their choices and purchase individual health coverage with the help of more than 3,200 State Farm agents, and their licensed representatives, at retail locations in Illinois, Montana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas—states where the agreement continues for a second year. The success of the first year initiative forms the ground work for the current expansion.

Starting Nov. 1, 2015, State Farm agents in the newly participating states will market individual health insurance policies for coverage with effective dates beginning Jan. 1, 2016. This alliance provides consumers with an opportunity to obtain personal assistance from State Farm agents who can explain coverage options and assist individuals in selecting plans that best meet their needs.

Certified State Farm agents in participating states will market health insurance plans available through both state-based and federally-facilitated marketplaces established under the health care reform law. Through these marketplaces, consumers who are eligible may also receive financial assistance from the government to help in paying premiums. Agents also will market policies that are available outside of the government marketplaces. In each of the 19 states, Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies will offer multiple health insurance plans from which State Farm customers may choose. Consumers have until Jan. 31, 2016, to sign up for coverage under the Affordable Care Act, for calendar year 2016.

"This expansion of our alliance with the Blue Cross Blue Shield companies to provide individual medical coverage is an important step in helping meet the health care needs of the marketplace, and we are excited about expanding our alliance in these 14 states," said State Farm Senior Vice President Joe Monk. "At State Farm, we help people manage risk and realize their dreams. Marketing individual medical coverage allows our agents to help people manage this key risk, so they can live confidently in pursuing their dreams. We're excited to team up with organizations of the caliber of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies in providing this important protection."

"Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies are committed to helping consumers understand their health insurance choices and help them navigate through what can sometimes be a challenging process," said Jody Voss, vice president of strategic business services for BCBSA. "State Farm's presence in these states is broad and deep, with familiar and convenient community locations. Our alliance with State Farm is a welcome addition to Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies' existing relationships with insurance agents and others who play a valuable role in providing access to health coverage."

* BCBS policies in certain portions of Missouri, New York and Virginia will not be available through local State Farm agents, including: the Kansas City Metro area and Northwestern Missouri; central New York (including Rochester and Syracuse); and Arlington County and the areas of Fairfax and Prince William counties lying east of Route 123 in Virginia.

About the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association

Too often, kids are both the ones most impacted yet least equipped to work through the situation.

But a new program in inner city Cleveland is working to fill those gaps and help kids who have suffered tragedy find a way to grieve, connect and find ways to move forward with their new realities.

You could call it grief camp, but it’s about far more than grieving. “Our goal is to instill in [the kids] encouragement, to motivate them to keep pressing on, to keep living life, but also to facilitate some of the necessary healing,” said Ty Morgan, spiritual director of Cornerstone of Hope, the organization behind the Cleveland program. “After you lose somebody, it does cause a big wound in your heart and your soul.”

Basically, Cornerstone of Hope, which offers a variety of grief and support services in Ohio for people who suffer a loss, recognized that while life insurance and legal arrangements can help protect kids and families on some level, it takes more than that to really address such a loss.

The weeklong program is designed to help kids explore and express their feelings through group activities, counseling and creative expression - and also just have fun.

"This is a camp for grieving kids, but we don’t want to completely emphasize their sadness, their anger, those negative emotions,” said Morgan. “We want them to have fun - they’re still kids – and show them that they can have fun despite their loss.”

Mark Tripodi, executive director and founder of Cornerstone of Hope, said he has seen this kind of approach give kids new ways to express themselves. “We foster different types of interventions for kids to express their grief, and one of the most powerful forms is the performing arts,” he said.

While the first two Cornerstone camps served kids in rural Ohio, the new camp in Cleveland, Camp Heroes, was specifically established to reach a new group of kids in the inner cities.

"We have definitely seen a lot of loss in the inner city, whether it’s from gang violence or other violence, accidental overdose is definitely on the rise in the Cleveland area,” said Shannon Grubich, camp coordinator and counselor with Cornerstone.

Wherever there is loss, Cornerstone offers a model for extending an emotional lifeline to kids.

“This next chapter is going to be difficult because their loved one is not with them, but it doesn’t have to be a terrible chapter of tragedy,” said Morgan. “It can be one of triumph.”

Then, the bottom dropped out.

As the years passed, Ron and Kelly were faced with a multitude of challenges. Ron experienced a back injury, forcing him into early retirement from his construction career. To keep the bills paid, Kelly took over the family finances and began pursuing her real estate license. When Kelly passed away suddenly in 2009, it came as both an emotional and financial shock to Ron and their two children.

“Every day you get up and go to work. Every day you get up and start your car. You take that for granted,” Ron said. “You never take [for] granted something unexpected. When Kelly passed away, it was very unexpected. She was worth everything to us.”

Fortunately, they had someone on their side: Their longtime friend (and insurance agent) Steve. It was now, when things looked their worst, that advice Steve had given years before paid off, enabling Ron to keep his family together.

Investing in the future

Many years before, based on Steve’s counsel, Ron and Kelly had chosen a permanent life insurance plan that accumulated cash value, which had allowed them to fulfill their dream of buying a home and paying for unforeseeable costs, like Ron’s medical bills.

But because of his health problems and the state of the economy in 2009, when Kelly had become the primary wage-earner in the family, finances were so tight that Ron told Kelly that he thought they should cancel their life insurance policy. They met with Steve again, who took the time to walk through their financial options and encouraged them to consider keeping their policy.

“The real lightbulb moment was when Ron realized how much Kelly really did for him and the household and family, and the fact that she did bring in income that he would have to do without if something should happen to her,” said Steve.

For most Americans, the death of a primary wage-earner would mean big living changes. According to LIMRA’s life insurance consumer studies, one-third of Americans believe they would feel the financial impact from the loss of a primary wage earner within one month of the wage earner’s passing. Half say they would feel an impact within six months.

After loss, some relief

Ron was in the group that would feel the impact immediately, and he feared what it could mean for his family. “With Emmet being a minor and Jamie just getting out of school and my serious back problems the last year that Kelly was alive, I’m afraid to think of what would have happened to all of us without our life insurance policy,” said Ron.

In the wake of Kelly’s death, Ron had to take over financial responsibility for the household. He reached out to Steve again, who reminded him they had kept their life insurance policy. In fact, he told Ron, they had actually increased their coverage, a decision that provided the necessary funds for Ron to remain with his sons and keep his home.

“It was a great relief when Steve told me we weren’t going to lose our house, and I was going to be able to stay here with the boys,” said Ron, “[Without insurance] I would have had to instantly liquidate everything or look to my relatives for help. Life insurance takes care of that unexpected stuff.”

What came next, though, was unexpected.

Mickey passed away a month later, and Rob had to grow up quickly and be the man of the family.

But then Rob saw that Mickey had found a way to stand by him, after all. He saw how his father’s life insurance and other benefits helped his mom and sister, and it eased his mind to know they were provided for when he was away starting his football career.

That experience led him to make life insurance the foundation of his own financial plan. “Everybody should have life insurance,” Sims says. “It’s the gift that keeps on giving.”

Making it a main dish

Rob’s opinion is shared by 34 percent of Americans who, when asked to compare life insurance to parts of a family meal, said it was the “main course” in their financial plan. Almost one in five, 18 percent, likened it to a nice-to-have dessert, 16 percent an appetizer for when you’re starting out, and 8 percent considered it a good-for-me-but-I’ll-pass vegetable side dish.

These results are among the key findings of a Harris Poll conducted on behalf of State Farm, which explored attitudes towards life insurance as part of a Life Insurance Awareness Month program in September.

Conversation plus action is key

Sometimes we’re shocked into awareness. When Sonia fell into a coma, her mother and young children had no idea what would come next and had to scramble to make ends meet. Fortunately, Sonia got a second chance. Recognizing the narrow miss when she recovered, she purchased life insurance to help ensure her family wouldn’t face such hardship again.

Sonia’s story reflects a number of realities in the insurance market today: People want to protect their families, but often aren’t taking action and discussing topics like life insurance and estate planning across generations.

A large majority (84 percent) of Americans believe life insurance is a smart way to care for their family’s future and 48 percent say it has been an important part of their family’s plan for generations. However, it is a difficult topic to discuss. Of those with living parents, only 42 percent of Americans have talked with their parents about life insurance and estate planning and 14 percent are planning to initiate a conversation.

Interestingly, despite generational differences, the survey revealed attitudes towards life insurance are fairly consistent across the generations – respondents in all age categories viewed life insurance as an important part of their financial mix and they tended to view it as an asset rather than as an expense.

This follows the overall trends in life insurance, said Mark Morris, a public relations consultant with life insurance industry group LIMRA. “Our research has shown that four in ten people buy life insurance because of a life event – getting married, buying a house or having children,” he said. “Ownership is pretty consistent [across generations] once they have that life event.”

The biggest difference, Morris said, is when the generations are having those events – generally later for Gen X and much later for Millennials than for the Baby Boomers decades ago.

Other key survey findings

Most Americans (76 percent) say their family would be financially protected if the unexpected were to happen to them.

The idea of purchasing life insurance evokes positive emotions (protected – 36%, confident - 22%, relieved – 21%) more frequently than negative feelings (confused – 17%, overwhelmed – 14%, stressed – 14%).

Many are unclear how financial products like permanent life insurance work – 46 percent were unsure if they could borrow against the cash value of a permanent life insurance policy, and another 11 percent incorrectly believed they could not.

While the survey found many similarities across generations in attitudes towards life insurance, the way people expect to interact with their insurance provider is evolving. LIMRA’s Morris noted that all age groups, especially younger generations, are interested in learning about and managing policies online and via mobile device.

“Are the needs of the different generations similar? Yes,” he said. “But their demands of insurance companies are changing.”

But nothing could prepare the 6’3, 320-pound guard for the blow he took just a month after he was drafted in 2006 – the passing of his father Mickey, also a former professional football player from Cleveland.

“You can imagine, I’m at the height [of success], you know what I mean?” remembers Rob. “And then one call. Boom. It’s done.”

In the months and years that followed, Sims struggled with the void left by his father, known in his playing days as the “Gentle Giant,” whom Sims remembers as “a real country man” from Union, South Carolina.

“He was just the best person you would ever meet,” Sims said. “He would take anybody in. He would feed anybody, clothe anybody, anything he could do.”

Finding help, delivering a message of hope

Despite his success in the years following his father’s passing, Sims found himself feeling empty – until he was able to work through his long-standing grief and focus his attention back out to the community, living the way his father would have lived and helping others who suffer loss like he did.

Sims and his family have learned to take their love of Mickey and focus it outward. Now, Sims honors his father by helping others who are on the same journey and raising funds for Cornerstone of Hope so that it can help others find peace.

Cornerstone of Hope, in Cleveland, Ohio, was founded by Mark Tripodi and his wife, Christy, after the loss of their son. The organization is supported by State Farm.

“When we tried to find support in our town, in our community, it was exhausting,” Tripodi remembers. “I’m proud to say that we’ve been in the community for many years now. And all of our programs are geared towards serving grieving children, teens and adults.”

A father’s lasting legacy

And Sims reminds others through his words and deeds what it means to be a father and to leave a lasting legacy: from the memories of a life well lived that children carry, to ensuring the economic security of the family through life insurance and financial responsibility, to doing good works in the community that last long after a man is gone.

“Everybody’s got a time, everybody has got a day when it’s going to be over,” Sims says. “But you leave your mark, just by being the person you are while you’re here and setting your family up for the future.”

<pp:caseid>136797</pp:caseid><pp:subtitle>You Make it Better!</pp:subtitle>

When Claire’s only child, Jude, was born, she instantly fell in love. As the weeks went by, Claire and her mother, Liz, started to notice that something was wrong. Jude cried often and wouldn’t gain weight. Then one day, after five seizures, a call to 9-1-1, and hospitalization, Jude was diagnosed with epilepsy.

Typically, people with seizure disorders have difficulty qualifying for an affordable life insurance policy, but thanks to Jude’s grandmother, he is protected for life. When Jude was 20 days old, Liz purchased a whole life insurance policy for him with a Guaranteed Insurability Option (GIO) rider. It will not only allow Jude to purchase additional insurance in the future without proof of insurability, but it will also build cash value that might be used for other things throughout his life, including future medical costs or education.

“I got life policies for both of my grandchildren right after they were born,” said Liz. “I had purchased them for my children and then wanted them for my grandchildren as well. I like the policy because it’s affordable, it builds cash value, and it offers the guaranteed insurability. It just seemed like the best life-long policy.”

Claire feels their unique story shows how important life insurance is and that it’s something all families should consider. Although Jude’s epilepsy diagnosis was quite unexpected (there is no family history), the disease is actually rather common – according to the Epilepsy Foundation, 50 million people are affected worldwide and almost 500 new cases of epilepsy are diagnosed every day in the U.S.

“As a mother, we believe that we have the ability to protect our children from everything. With Jude having the seizures when he was little, I realized there are a lot of things I can’t protect him from,” Claire said. “There are things in life moms can’t prevent or control. It’s like if there was a big earthquake, you know what – I couldn’t stop it… I couldn’t make the earth stop shaking. But I feel like Jude’s life insurance is a safety net. I know that no matter what happens throughout his life, he will always have that.”

Liz feels Jude’s life insurance policy is a gift that will keep on giving, probably longer than she’ll be around. “It will certainly outlast any of the other type of gifts that a grandmother could give,” Liz said. “Blocks, toy trucks, whatever will be discarded, but this will keep going for him. Because I took the guaranteed insurability rider, he will be able to continue to add life insurance over time throughout his life – like when he gets married or he has a child. He can add more and it will continue to build cash value.”

Despite Jude’s health issues, he is exuberant, active, rambunctious, and goes nonstop from morning to night. He loves taking things apart and putting them back together, making new friends, and is very loving, especially to his mom and grandma.

“Obviously, as a mom, you fall in love instantly…but as I’ve watched him get older and have to go through so much, and he’s just so amazing…that your heart grows more and more every day,” Claire says.

Life insurance helped prepare the family when the unexpected came their way and they are now in a good place. They are dealing with and overcoming the challenges of epilepsy and are positive about Jude’s future. He’s down to one epilepsy medication, attends a regular preschool program, does everything any other five-year-old child does, and has a very bright future.

“I think it’s going to be really great,” Claire said. “I really hope he’s able to inspire other children like him to reach for the stars…because there’s nothing that he can’t do, not with that smile!”

stories,GoodNeighbor,Illinois,IL,epilepsy,seizure,GIO,Protect,Life,insurance,life insurance
