After the storm has passed, the longer work of recovery begins.

It’s here that the remarkable service of State Farm shines. Bringing the largest disaster response in the industry means a coordinated effort of people, technology and resources, all working together to provide exceptional service to policyholders and support to the community.

State Farm is there

State Farm Claims specialists assist customers at Louisiana Customer Care sites

In addition to thousands of employees remotely helping thousands of customers on the phone and online, State Farm claims operations are on site, day after day, helping policyholders in impacted areas.

In support of Ida response, State Farm set up seven mobile Customer Care sites – four in Louisiana and three in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. These operations bring claims teams and customers together to inspect vehicles, help with questions, and disburse payments.

Over the last two weeks, more than 1,500 customers have been given in-person help at our Louisiana Customer Care sites. So far, our overall claims operations have been able to reach more than 90% of customers who have filed a homeowner claim related to Ida, with 1 in 4 of those claims already settled.

Neighbors helping neighbors

A big part of the State Farm difference is the 19,000 State Farm agents who live and work in the same communities as our policyholders. That means that in addition to access by phone, app, and web site, State Farm customers have a State Farm agent right there in the neighborhood, ready to talk through your hopes, plans, and needs. And when disaster happens, they are neighbors ready to help.

In the wake of Ida, State Farm agents reached out to customers in impacted areas to help the recovery process.

Agent Courtney Gulledge of Harahan, La., lived up to that promise when one of her policyholders, Tassanee Nirandorn, received severe damage to his home. Courtney used draft authority, which allows agents to directly disburse payment toward the settlement of a claim. By providing an advance on claim payments, we can help customers start the process of recovery. Nirandorn was pleased with this service, saying, “On the news, all I have heard is that insurance companies are a pain to deal with, but that has not been my experience. State Farm has been exceptional during this process.”

Supporting the larger community

In addition to helping policyholders recover from the unexpected, State Farm has used its philanthropic resources to support community organizations that are helping the recovery process.

State Farm has issued $900,000 in disaster-relief grants to community organizations in Louisiana, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, plus a $10,000 grant to the Midwest Food Bank in Illinois to provide support to multiple Ida-impacted areas.

Louisiana:

$400,000 to support the local Red Cross chapter of Southeast Louisiana

$150,000 to support Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans

$100,000 to support Northshore Community Foundation

$100,000 to support The Catholic Charities Diocese of Houma – Thibodaux

Northeast:

$50,000 to support American Red Cross New Jersey Region

$50,000 to support American Red Cross Greater New York Region

$25,000 to support American Red Cross Southeastern Philadelphia Region

$25,000 to support the Philabundance organization

“In the aftermath of Hurricane Ida, we are truly proud to work alongside partners such as State Farm who have raised their hand to support thousands of families impacted by this devastating storm,” said Lindsay Mathieson, regional disaster officer of the American Red Cross of Louisiana. “It is that generous support that allows us to provide much-needed comfort and care to help the people who need it most.”

Said Natalie Jayroe, Second Harvest Food Bank President and CEO, “This major support from State Farm will be critical to our response to this latest disaster impacting South Louisiana. Our deepest thanks go out to the entire State Farm team and their customers.”

The work continues

Recovering from a disaster like Hurricane Ida will take time. State Farm claims operations will continue the work of serving impacted policyholders in the weeks and months ahead. More than 98,000 total claims have been received so far for Hurricane Ida-related damage, and every one of those claims is a life changed by this storm.

Being a good neighbor is about more than just one moment or just one act. For State Farm, it means continuing the work until every last claim has been handled and finding ways to help our communities thrive. When the unexpected happens, State Farm is there to help policyholders and communities recover.

stories,Hurricane,Hurricane Ida,Louisiana,catastrophe,Red Cross,grants,catastrophe response,claims,customer care,New York,New Jersey,Pennsylvania,mobile app,Agents,food bank,disaster,recovery,community_feed

Thousands of State Farm agents and employees began to mobilize and prepare to respond to our customers’ needs prior to the storm’s arrival.

The State Farm response to Ida is both local and national. It includes State Farm agents who live and work in the same neighborhoods as our customers; teams of claim specialists trained in disaster response traveling in to evaluate damage on site; thousands of employees in centralized care centers across the country helping answer customers’ questions and file their claims; remote claim teams conducting virtual inspections with impacted customers; and many other resources, all helping customers in their time of need.

Delivering on the promise

In the immediate aftermath of the storm, State Farm began claim inspections in areas safe for entry, focusing on the most severe damage first where possible.

Agents and Customer Care Center employees have responded to thousands of customer calls, helping customers understand their coverage and how the claim process works, including aspects of coverage that come into play when damage is especially severe.

When storms such as Ida cause severe damage to homes, customers may be displaced. Additional Living Expense (ALE) coverage under a Homeowners or Renters policy is triggered when a covered loss causes the residence to become uninhabitable. ALE can cover some increased costs such as housing, meals, and mileage.

Some media reports are incorrectly suggesting ALE does not apply without a mandatory evacuation having been ordered. These reports are seemingly focused on one portion of our ALE coverage for affected policyholders: Prohibited Use. We are addressing the needs of displaced customers. State Farm is paying, and will pay, thousands of Prohibited Use and ALE claims to our policyholders following Hurricane Ida

For customers who have a loss covered under ALE due to the extent of damage to their home, that loss adjustment occurs regardless of the type of evacuation order in their neighborhood. Once a State Farm customer reports a claim to us, we will evaluate their damage. The process from there depends on many factors including the extent of damage and accessibility of the property. (We’re working with local authorities for access when it’s safe.)

We are here for all of our customers and are committed to pay what we owe. State Farm’s policies in Louisiana, the Northeast and other states, are filed with and approved by state insurance regulators in each state, respectively. State Farm honors the terms of the contract with our customers. Altering the terms of the contract for one event would be unfair to all those who have experienced loss from previous disasters.

Getting a boost from technology

In addition to on-site physical inspection of claims and the service provided by local agents, State Farm is making the most of technology to reach customers in more ways and make the process of resolving claims even faster and easier.

Virtual claim handling allows customers to conduct real-time inspections of damage with remote claim teams through their smartphone cameras.

Use of drones and aerial imagery allow State Farm to quickly assess damage and accessibility of storm-impacted areas, and to conduct roof inspections in a way that is safe, efficient and supports social distancing.

Digital pay options allow for claim settlements to be direct-deposited into customers’ bank accounts, getting funds to customers more quickly, whether or not banks are open.

Customers are encouraged to use the State Farm Mobile App and online account access for many self-service options such as filing and tracking claims, uploading documents during the claim process, requesting emergency roadside service, setting up a rental car reservation, and setting up digital pay.

Crews work to assemble the Customer Care Site in Gonzales, LA

Bringing in-person service where it’s needed most

To provide convenient local service to customers, mobile Customer Care Sites are being set up in multiple locations near the hardest-hit areas of Louisiana. And let’s face it, we are all snacking more during the pandemic! Kim Velasco’s Basic Life Skills students range in age from 5-21. Cooking class is a perfect at-home or in-person learning activity for all her special needs students.

“Our students are able to learn and practice important skills. Following a recipe, measuring and kitchen safety are cooking skills they might not otherwise get to use,” Kim said. “We focus on cooking foods in ways students can do themselves, rather than relying on adults around them. These are important skills that help them become more independent and will serve them throughout their lives.”

The chosen recipes align with the week’s academic theme. Rice crispy treat nests with jelly bean eggs, pancakes, grilled cheese and soup have been favorites so far. The recipes are accompanied by pictures so students can see the steps and follow along. After the students complete the recipe, they are encouraged to try the food item and discuss the experience.

With her $2,500 State Farm Teacher Assist grant, Kim’s been able to expand the program. It started at-home as a way to engage students when they were fully remote-learning. Now back in the classroom four days a week, the grant's allowed her to continue it. She’s able to provide a wider variety of ingredients and opportunities to work with different types of foods and techniques.

Students with disabilities often require repetitive practice before mastering a skill. As a result, its overall personal auto rate will drop by 4.2 percent. The total statewide expected impact for State Farm Mutual by this rate decrease in New York will be approximately $63.8 million.

The last auto rate change in New York was a decrease of 2.2 percent in November 2018. Combined, the two auto rate decreases will save New York customers $98.7 million.

“We’re always evaluating how we can best serve our customers and are very pleased to be able to offer this rate decrease in New York ,” said State Farm Senior Vice President Chris Schell. “Lower than expected expenses and losses were important factors, among many, that supported our decision to make this rate change.”

Overall changes in premiums for individual motorists will vary depending on the specific details of an individual customer’s policy and chosen coverages. The effective date for new and renewal business is July 15, 2019. New York customers with questions can contact their local State Farm agent to discuss their individual situation.

In addition to this rate reduction, State Farm agents are able to review with new and existing customers the many opportunities for additional discounts that may apply to an individual’s unique circumstances. A rate decrease combined with discounts offers an exceptional long-term value to State Farm customers.

That’s because a shipment of fleece blankets is being delivered to his furry friends at Lilo’s Promise Animal Rescue.

Located in New Jersey, the no-kill rescue is home to pit-bulls in need of loving homes.

Aladdin’s owner and Lilo’s Promise Community Outreach Coordinator, Michele Schaffer-Stevens says the soft items are a source of comfort for dogs in need.

“Having something like a homemade blanket makes a world of difference verses a concrete floor,” said Stevens. “It’s a touch of home for a dog who is waiting for its forever home.”

Aladdin knows what that’s like. In 2013, weighing just 18 pounds and missing teeth…he came into Michele’s life.

“He’d been treated so poorly by a human being. A pit-bull of his size should be about 48 pounds,” Stevens explained. “I took him in and cared for him. Today, Aladdin is a healthy, happy therapy dog who works in schools, with disaster victims, and hospice patients.”

The six-year-old pit-bull is also an ambassador for dog safety programs – and has worked with State Farm to promote responsible pet ownership.

“These are amazing, resilient animals,” said Stevens. “We love to pay it forward in the community, and working with State Farm amplifies our ability to create good in this world.”

The fleece blankets made for dogs in need are part of the State Farm Neighborhood of Good®. The initiative, focused on the power of volunteering, encourages people to donate their time and talent to make a difference in their local communities.

To promote animal welfare, special volunteer events took place across the country. People were encouraged to visit a local State Farm Neighborhood of Good tent to make a fleece blanket for a rescue dog.

In New York City, the creative opportunity caught the attention of many passing by.

“It felt so good to be part of this effort,” said Kionna McClary. “It doesn’t matter who you are, you are creating a positive impact. Just five minutes can make a difference for an animal in need.”

McClary worked at the tent in New York City – assisting people as they created the soft blankets.

“This was a great learning opportunity for children and adults alike, said McClary. “Many asked how they can continue to stay involved. That’s when I told them about the Neighborhood of Good website.”

The website, www.NeighborhoodofGood.com® connects people to local causes in their community. By typing in their zip code and selecting their interest from a drop down menu, visitors can find a volunteer opportunity close to home.

“There’s something out there for everyone,” said McClary. “Whether that’s pets or music or the environment – it’s about discovering your passion and giving back.”

Interests on the Neighborhood of Good website include, (but aren’t limited to) education, arts and culture, technology, disaster and community services, animals and family services. For people with multiple interests - there’s an “All” category too.

“Many remarked how good it felt to volunteer,” said McClary. “Knowing they were making an impact for an animal in need was the highlight of their day. I’m excited to for more people to visit Neighborhood of Good to continue turning the power of caring into the act of doing.”

And for the dogs at Lilo’s Promise – Stevens says, the gift of a soft blanket, as they wait to find a loving home…is priceless.

“We are truly grateful for the kindness of volunteers. We couldn’t do it without them. A little love, goes a long way.”

To view dogs available for adoption at Lilo’s Promise, visit: www.lilospromise.com

To find volunteer opportunities in your neighborhood visit: www.NeighborhoodofGood.com

stories,community involvement,Aladdin the pit bull,pit-bull,Dogs,Neighborhood of Good,New York,NY,Lilo's Promise Animal Rescue,Community outreach,Michelle Schaffer-Stevens,fleece blankets,forever home,dog safety programs,ambassador,therapy dog,Responsible Pet Ownership,Pay it Forward,create good in the world,Volunteering,volunteer,donate,time and talent,Make A Difference,animal welfare,volunteer events,Kionna McClary,causes,turning the power of caring into the act of doing,soft blanket,kindness,little love goes a long way,volunteer opportunties

Learn how you can "Insure Your Love".

Losing a parent is difficult at any stage of life. But for young adults just starting out, it can be devastating.

“Losing my mother has taken an emotional and financial toll on my entire life,” said Jesaura Peralta, a senior at Laboratory Institute of Merchandising (LIM) College in New York City. “It’s the biggest tragedy I’ve ever faced, but it’s also made me stronger, determined and goal-oriented.

“When my mom – my best friend – lost her battle with cancer, her funeral and other expenses were a complete financial struggle for my family. She had no life insurance and there was no plan for any of this.”

Jesaura, one of two college students who recently earned scholarships from State Farm® through a program called Life Lessons by Life Happens®, worked up to three jobs at one time to get through school and make ends meet after her mother’s death.

Her mother, Ercilia Alvarez, came to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic in 1984 and raised Jesaura and her older brother as a single parent. “She came to a new country, made a good living and was successful,” said Jesaura. “She also left a loving impact on every person she met.

“Then in 2013, my mom became very ill, eventually diagnosed with stage 4 duodenal cancer,” she said. “When she died later that year, my life changed forever. If she had life insurance, we could’ve grieved for her without worrying about finances every step of the way.”

While no one wants to think about leaving children or young adults behind with no financial resources, it happens. When it does, it can change the path of their young lives.

Life insurance can make a difference in how your loved ones live the rest of their lives if the unexpected happens to you and they are left behind.

Young families, single parents or anyone with doubts about how their kids would get by without them are the ones who need life insurance most.

It was like rolling thunder. The roar of dozens of motorcycles is so loud you can physically feel the noise.

That’s what parade-goers saw and felt when more than 100 motorcyclists escorted a white, cargo van down an Albany, street. The parade kicked off the van’s arrival at The Vet House, but also signified a new beginning for homeless veterans.

The Vet House, operated by the Albany Housing Coalition, is a transitional residence, providing safe, temporary housing for veterans in need.

“We can provide housing for up to 28 individuals at a time, which helps reduce homelessness among veterans,” says Albany Housing Coalition Executive Director Joe Sluszka.

The Coalition owns 15 properties, including 57 apartment units. “Veterans typically stay at The Vet House for around nine months, but some need to stay up to a year and half,” explains Joe. “Afterwards, they move to permanent housing, either at our facility or somewhere else. The coalition helps subsidize their rent, if needed.”

This is where the van comes in.

Brand name stores often donate household goods, such as televisions and furniture, to the veterans moving into their new homes. Transporting these items was a challenge.

State Farm and H&V Collision Center teamed up to help. The result is a donated, refurbished van helping move homeless veterans into stable, permanent housing.

“This has been a lifesaver for us and our veterans,” says Joe. “Additionally, our maintenance team uses the van to carry tools and supplies to ensure our properties are in top shape.”

The Coalition, which has been in existence more than 20 years, provides other assistance for veterans aside from the Vet House. Legal services, employment programs, and peer support groups are offered. Case management teams also help veterans regain their independence by connecting them with healthcare resources to obtain physical, mental, and drug and alcohol addiction treatment.

“We were alerted to an older veteran who was living in the woods,” says Joe. “After approaching him, we learned his story. He had owned a roofing business and raised a family. After he and his wife divorced, he turned to alcohol. Everything spun out of control. He lost his business and home and no longer saw his kids. We were able to bring him to The Vet House and secured him a job installing the roof on the state capitol building. During that time, he got healthier and reconnected with his adult son. He and his son bought a house together and now own a successful roofing business.”

The Coalition supports approximately 500 veterans a year and some of their programs have been used as national models. They also won the coveted VA Secretary’s Award in 2013 for outstanding service to homeless veterans.

“I love the impact we’re having on the community, specifically for our veterans in need,” adds Joe.

stories,Good Neighbors,community involvement,Neighborhood of Good,Societal Impact,NY,New York,Veterans,motorcycles,patriots,army,Military,Marines,Navy,air force,Help,assistance

He did well academically, but couldn’t find a good job and felt out of place.

“I grew up in New York City,” explains Freddy. “But my parents retired to Puerto Rico so I followed along.”

He realized he needed a new location and a career. With a lifelong respect of the military, Freddy enlisted in the Army. He went into combat three times, serving in Iraq and Afghanistan as a Black Hawk mechanic and instructor.

He wanted to continue his Army career, but unfortunately Freddy had to medically retire in 2014 due to a traumatic brain injury and back injuries.

“I wanted to stay,” says Freddy. “It’s been difficult adjusting to civilian life. It’s very different and I was struggling.”

“After the Army, I was doing radio broadcasting and videos for local communities, but I was doing things the wrong way,” he continued. “I didn’t have a clue and desperately wanted to attend a school to learn the proper way, but they were all too expensive. So, I prayed, and got a miracle.”

One day, Freddy received an email from the Connecticut Public Broadcasting Network (CPBN), offering free media training for veterans and their family members. Freddy responded to the school that night.

“I needed to attend their classes,” Freddy says. “This was my opportunity to learn something to carry me into my next career.”

He was accepted into CPBN’s Veterans Vocational Training Program (VVTP), which is supported by State Farm. But there was a catch. The classes were in Connecticut and Freddy now lived in Virginia with his family.

“It was scary,” he explains. “I had no place to live near the school, but I wanted this course so badly.”

A week before the program began, Freddy contacted a cousin in Connecticut who he had never met, and asked for help. She offered to rent him a room.

“It was tough leaving my wife and kids, but I thought of it as a deployment,” he says.

“PBN’s service to veterans is like nothing I’ve seen before,” he shares. “The staff treats veterans and their families with respect and kindness. Plus, I met other veterans with stories and experiences similar to mine. It made me feel comfortable and I formed many lasting friendships.”

Freddy attended a second semester while renting an apartment two blocks from the school. He took advantage of every class offered, learning new programs, videoing, editing, radio broadcasting, photography, and more. He even toured TV stations.

“Once Freddy enrolled in the program, he sought out every opportunity for growth and learning, says CPBN Senior Vice President of Education Donna Sodipo. “As a result, he not only passed his Adobe Premier Pro certification exam, but took the time to mentor high school students through WNPR's ‘Radio Lab’ project. His enthusiasm was contagious. Freddy’s dedication and success are remarkable, and speaks to the potential that can be realized through the Veterans Vocational Training Program.”

“The atmosphere around the program is great and they teach in a style that was very helpful for me to learn given all of my service connected conditions,” says Freddy. “I often asked the same questions over and over, but they always responded with patience and understanding.”

Freddy is back living with his family in Virginia, but continues to look for more CPBN courses. He currently creates websites, small videos, and t-shirt and print design, but hopes to own his own radio station one day. His goal is to bring positive messaging to his community, focusing on religion, current news, and sports.

“My experience with CPBN has been unforgettable,” says Freddy. “There is now a part of Connecticut and CPBN in my heart. The entire staff is amazing and they made the adrenaline pump through my veins again.”

“Thank you, CPBN and State Farm, for greatly impacting veterans’ lives, as well as our communities.”

stories,New York,NY,Veterans Day,Military,Service,Good Neighbors,CT,Connecticut,Careers,community involvement

Safe transportation is a necessity for them to fulfill their important community safety role. In fact, adequate transportation for his new partner was one of David’s first concerns. His partner, Patty, is loyal, eager, has an outgoing personality. She also has the most important nose in the fire department.

K9 Patty is an accelerant detection canine, commonly referred to as an arson dog. She is the Beaver Falls Fire Department’s not-so-secret weapon. David and K9 Patty search through burnt debris while investigating fire scenes throughout western Pennsylvania. They look for the presence of accelerants (i.e. gasoline or fuel) which may indicate an arson fire. This evidence is critical in determining how a fire was started and ultimately bringing the arsonist to justice.

Trained through the State Farm Arson Dog Program in April 2015, David and K9 Patty made an immediate impact in their community. Beginning in late August of the same year, abandoned homes in Beaver Falls and neighboring White Township were being burned to the ground. Over the course of a month, at least 11 abandoned homes or other buildings were torched. K9 Patty did her job. She found evidence of accelerants at several of the fire scenes, indicating that the fires might be the work of a serial arsonist.

Because of her work, community fear turned to relief on September 29, 2015. Officers noticed a suspicious individual at an abandoned home that had just been set on fire. Apprehended at the scene, detectives had K9 Patty sniff his clothing for possible evidence. The canine hero alerted to accelerant on his shoes. Based on her alert and other information gathered at the scene, the suspect was arrested and charged with arson

K9 Patty was definitely showing her skills and value to the community. However, there was still a big problem. K9 Patty needed safe and comfortable transport to fire investigations.

Surrounding communities and counties called in the team to investigate fire scenes because of their early success. The City of Beaver Falls didn’t have a car or truck with a dog cage or a heat alarm system for K9 Patty.

Once again, State Farm was there to help. State Farm agents Brian Wozniak, Bethanie DeLuca, and Eddie Isabella attended a community event where K9 Patty demonstrated her skills. They also learned of her need for safe transport. The Beaver Falls-based agents reached out to State Farm Public Affairs Community Specialist Dwayne Redd, and the search was on for a respectable “K9 mobile.”

State Farm associates up and down the East Coast were alerted to the need for a salvage vehicle to donate to the fire department. Claims Salvage Monitors Steven Wisotsky and Bob Jena located a 2013 Ford Taurus in a Long Island auction yard. It had been part of a recovered theft case. Steven and Bob began networking to raise money for upgrades to the Taurus through the Recycled Rides program.

“There were many issues with creating a police or fire vehicle from the civilian version of the Ford Taurus,” Steven said. “Special mounts for the dog cage had to be custom made and welded to the interior. There were issues with the civilian version of the front console verses the police interceptor package. Headlamps and tail lights needed retrofitting to accept emergency lighting. There were endless challenges but we found ways to make it all work.”

After several months of hard work, the team had the vehicle and parts, but still needed donations to modify the car for maximum safety. Steven called State Farm Agent Stephanie Sgroi in Port Jefferson Station, NY and she became involved in the project too.

“I’ve worked with Steven for a couple of years on similar donations,” Stephanie said. “When he asked me to help, it was a no brainer. I hooked him up with the local fire chief and a customer who handles fire equipment for municipalities.”

“Donations started pouring in,” Steven says, “more than we could have hoped for. We had enough to install the dog safety cage to protect the dog from injury resulting from a crash or roll over. We also installed a heat alarm system which has temperature sensors that open the windows and set off alarms when the temperature escalates. We even installed equipment that the fire department needed, but didn’t have a budget for - a light bar, siren, front and rear strobe lights, ghost lettering, and a two-way radio.”

For State Farm Agent Brian Wozniak, it was a special moment when the vehicle was finally completed and put into service.

“It was great to see everyone come together,” Brian said. “New York agents and businesses donated even though they’ll never see the Pennsylvania team in action. We wouldn’t have been able to fund the vehicle by holding raffles and spaghetti dinners. It’s pretty special, and I’m proud State Farm was a part of it.”

Beaver County Commissioner Sandy Egley summed up the donation event perfectly. “Beaver County doesn’t have very many good days, but this was a very good day.”

The following businesses donated either monetarily or in-kind.

Pennsylvania Donors: Beaver County collision Center, Brady’s Run Veterinary, Glick Fire Equipment, Hutch Homes, Jims Visionary Auto + Best Buy Motors, MSA Mine Safety Equipment, Oram’s Doughnuts, McElwain Brothers Body Shop, Novak Auto Wrecking, Zignature Pet Foods and several local State Farm Agents

Like most grandparents, there is nothing more special than spending time with her grandchildren.

Her daughter Kelly came up for the weekend from New York City with her girls, Olivia, four, and baby Mila, 10 months. Lynn’s son, Stephen, who lives nearby, came with his three girls. It was a packed house.

Lynn turned on the portable heater in the back bedroom where baby Mila would sleep since it was so cold outside. Everyone went to bed exhausted after a long day of driving and playing.

At 2:00 a.m. Kelly woke up to baby Mila crying. She went into the back bedroom, scooped up Mila, and brought her into bed. Both fell back to sleep.

At 5:30 a.m. Lynn was half awake when she heard the hallway smoke detector. She initially thought the battery was low but at the same time the ADT smoke alarm was going off. It got louder and louder.

Lynn jumped out of bed and ran to the room with the portable heater. There was a chemical smell in the air. Lynn’s daughter Kelly woke up too. At first she wasn’t worried but then her mom came bursting into the bedroom.

Kelly ran into the room where baby Mila had been sleeping and saw the portable heater was on fire. The flames were already a foot high.

Kelly had Mila in her arms and ran into the room where her daughter Olivia was sleeping. She woke up Olivia, grabbed her hand, and made it out of the front door. Kelly’s eyes were stinging from the smoke but the family was out of the house safely.

Nearly 800 miles away, ADT Dispatcher Amanda Willoughby started her 4 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. shift at ADT’s Knoxville, TN monitoring center. Her job requires her to be calm and ready to assist customers should a monitor go off.

At approximately 5:30 a.m. she received an alarm notification from the ADT system at the home of Lynn Smith. She immediately contacted the fire department to report an emergency.

At the same time Kelly was calling 911 to report the fire, Lynn received an incoming call.

“This is Amanda with ADT security. Is everything okay there?”

Amanda asked if everybody was out of the house and informed Lynn the fire department would arrive shortly. Within minutes, Owasco Fire Department trucks and ambulances were on scene. Thanks to the quick response, the fire only had time to scorch the bedroom carpet and blacken the walls in half the house.

Being Thankful

“We could have slept through it. The smoke could have killed us,” shared Lynn.

State Farm Agent Ray Haynes was also thankful too. As an insurance agent, he knows how devastating a fire can be for a homeowner and was very relieved his customer Lynn and her family were safe.

On April 22, 2016, six weeks after the fire, ADT held an event at Smith's home. ADT presented the company's highest honor, the LifeSaver Award, to Willoughby and the technicians who installed the home's alarm system. The company flew Willoughby in from Knoxville, TN so she could not only accept the award, but also meet Lynn Smith personally.

ADT and State Farm representatives presented $10,000 to the Owasco Fire Department for its efforts that day. Fire Chief Chris Morabito said the grant will fund the purchase of an air compressor to fill firefighters' bottles before they enter dangerous environments like the one at the Smith home.

"Every two and a half hours, someone in America dies in a house fire," Morabito said at the event. "Smoke detectors are a definite need in every house. If you can hook it up to a center like ADT that makes it even better because you know you're getting somebody to call you back and make sure everything is good."

To learn more about an ADT special offer for State Farm customers, visit the ADT Home Security website or State Farm Home Protection & Automation. Inspiring students to seek Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) careers. Restoring a struggling economy. Sounds like some lofty goals.

But the Vestal and Binghamton communities in the Southern Tier of New York state are more than up for the challenge.

The Kopernik Observatory & Science Center, one of the top equipped public observatories in the Northeast, opened its doors in 1974. Today, there are plans to expand the center, creating a science park with an outdoor learning facility, a playground and a (STEM) educational experience.

Currently, Kopernik serves 10,000 people annually. The goal is to double the visitors through expanded programming and the new science park.

Sounds like a great plan. But the community needed more funding. Fortunately, the Junior League of Binghamton heard about the State Farm Neighborhood Assist grant program through a local State Farm agent, Dean Hurley.

Not only did they win one of the 40 grants, but the crowdsourcing program helped kick off the half-million dollar science park project campaign. It reenergized the community about the need and importance of STEM programs. “We will have playground equipment unlike any other playground in the area. It will be a destination for people of the Southern Tier and tourists,” said Rachel Consolazio, a member of the Junior League of Binghamton.

“There’s opportunities to have a merry-go-round that has a generator built into it, so as the kids are running around, they’re creating electricity and running devices. Or, they might learn about friction through a slide,” said Drew Deskur, Director of the Kopernik Observatory and Science Center.

Soon the new, expanded (and free!) park will be open. Those goals aren’t so lofty anymore.

story,State Farm Neighborhood Assist,GoodNeighbor,Kids,New York,Science,Math,SFNA,Technology,stories,gold,Kopernik Observatory,Kopernik Observatory & Science Center,Kopernik Observatory and Science Center,Binghamton,Vestal,STEM,Dean Hurley,Rachel Consolazio,Drew Deskur,Things are Looking Up,A new science park is reenergizing a New York community

(Success, Opportunity, Achievement, Responsibility). A joint project between Buffalo (NY) Public Schools and non-profit Cradle Beach, the program provides long-term mentor support to 310 students.

Project S.O.A.R. matches students with a one-on-one, positive adult mentor, every day – including summers - for 10 years of the student’s life. The mentors, who receive AmeriCorps training, provide hope, opportunities and life changing experiences.

“This (the one-on-one match) is truly the building block of everything else we do. When a student has support every day of their life it snowballs into success, shared Nick Schifano, Director of Project S.O.A.R. I’m proud of the students who have found a purpose and a reason to take their education seriously because of the mentors and Project S.O.A.R.”

“The only way to be successful is to value your education and always have a goal to strive for, Schifano continued. As a program, we have a lot of work to do but we will celebrate the small successes and strive to be our best for the children we serve.”

Since the program’s inception in 2010, there have been several success stories. Here are a few.

Annabelle

As a fifth-grader, Annabelle was argumentative and disrespectful with classmates and teachers alike. Far too often, her actions landed her in the school’s Student Support Room where she missed out on learning time.

Project S.O.A.R. paired Annabelle with an AmeriCorps mentor at the beginning of the 2014 school year. She began to open up and her attitude and behavior improved. She spent more time in class and her grades improved. She was much less disrespectful, and when she was, she realized and apologized.

"What I like about Project S.O.A.R. is that every single morning I give you guys hugs and you’re so happy to see me. Everybody is loving and caring, and I can talk to you guys (the mentors) about everything, especially since you guys helped me through my mom’s passing and everything else over the past two years. Project S.O.A.R. is really fun, and I appreciate everything they’ve done for me.”

Today, the sixth-grader has confidence in her leadership skills, accepts others, and focuses on her academics. Annabelle even participates in class and after school programs. She now brings a positive, contagious energy to class instead of disruption.

Jalissa

When Jalissa was in third-grade, she was quiet and shy. She had difficulty completing assignments, rarely participated in class and often missed school. A struggling C- student, Jalissa didn’t believe in herself or think she could make the honor roll.

After four years working one-on-one with a mentor, she has shown steady improvement. She has more confidence and self-motivation. Jalissa now has someone in her life that gives her the strength to believe in herself and set goals

Today, Jalissa is in sixth-grade and has perfect attendance. Gone is the shy and quiet girl. Now she leads her peers by encouraging them. When others are bullied, she stands up for them. She is an Honor Roll student who is outgoing, energetic, bright, and a true leader.

“My mentors helped me get my grades up and my attendance too,” Jalissa said. “Having a mentor helped me because I have someone to talk to.”

Jason

One of the first nine students in Project S.O.A.R., Jason is now exceeding expectations six years later.

In the fall of 2009, Jason was full of energy and anger. He lacked self-control, and struggled to focus in the classroom. He did not know how to connect with his teachers and peers. Instead, Jason wandered the halls during class.

Though kind and compassionate, his inability to build relationships made him feel left out. Jason’s mentors worked with his mom to develop a plan and paired him with an AmeriCorps tutor and a mentor in his classroom.

The daily classroom interaction Project S.O.A.R. provided allowed his mentors to discover most of Jason’s anger and acting-out stemmed from academic struggles and the need for more one-on-one tutoring.

With someone to count on, and the comfort of daily support, Jason blossomed into a kind, caring, and motivated leader. Last school year, he helped others by tutoring and mentoring the new Project S.O.A.R. third-graders and excelled at summer camp as a peer counselor.

Now a high school student, Jason continues to succeed and is a model for all Project S.O.A.R. students.

Nyshon

Nyshon enjoyed the notoriety his actions generated from his classmates more than getting his education. He barely progressed from one grade to another.

Project S.O.A.R. paired Nyshon with a mentor who helped him write out specific goals. They found Nyshon enjoyed solving mathematical problems. He only needed a little guidance, confidence in his ability to learn, and a caring adult who could answer his questions.

By the end of the 3rd semester of 6th grade, Nyshon settled into his schoolwork. He rejoined the class in a group setting. He no longer had to sit at a single desk on the outside of the group. His behavior had changed for the best.

He achieved perfect attendance as well as the merit roll. His improvement was noticeable, but he would not be satisfied until he reached his goal of making the Honor Roll.

He applied himself more than ever to passing the sixth-grade. He turned his work in on time and boldly asked for extra credit to secure his place on the Honor Roll. His efforts to make the Honor Roll paid off. In the fourth semester, Nyshon earned a 92% GPA to place him on the Honor Roll.

Nyshon also participates in Project S.O.A.R.’s Summer Enrichment Program. “I like going to the Project S.O.A.R. summer camp because I get to spend time away from the T.V. We learn new things and go to a lot of the different places during the summer. Going to a Bison’s game was my favorite part.“

Results gain attention and monetary support

The unique educational and leadership programs offered by Cradle Beach, like Project S.O.A.R., have attracted attention from leaders and businesses in the community. In the past ten years, several State Farm agents from the Buffalo area have worked together to raise and donate more than one million dollars to Cradle Beach. With the continued support of their community, Cradle Beach will help change the lives of hundreds of students, and in turn the community as a whole, for years to come.

Some days it takes her 45 minutes to fit into her motorized chair. Sophia is paralyzed from the neck down.

On September 11, 2013, a motorcyclist set in motion a pile up that began with him rear-ending a bus on a dark road in Long Island, NY. The cyclist then took off on foot, leaving the bike on the road. This caused a chain reaction.

Sophia, driving with her teenage son, Chris, slowly approached the crash site. She noticed an empty parked car in her lane. As she attempted to go around it, another car slammed into the back of Sophia’s car. Thankfully, both Chris and Sophia were both wearing their seatbelt.

Sophia lost consciousness, but remembers yelling for Chris and then waking up in the hospital. Even in the face of her own life-changing injuries, Sophia was relieved when she learned Chris was ok.

A year after the crash, Chris was asked by the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Traffic Committee to speak as a “Saved by the belt survivor”, and kick off their Click It or Ticket border to border enforcement mobilization. Sophia saw her son speak as an auto safety advocate for the first time. She knew firsthand what inspired him to persuade people to wear their seatbelt.

Since graduating from high school earlier this year, Chris speaks to high schools across Long Island during teen driver safety events. He has been an advocate for auto safety since working with EAC (Education Assistance Corporation)and State Farm on a Celebrate My Drive teen driver safety event.

Before the crash, Sophia enjoyed cooking and scrapbooking. Now she enjoys spending time with her neighbors. Once a month they have dinner together, or as they call it, a “chat and chew”. She is supportive of Chris’ teen driver safety advocacy work.

No matter what happens in Sophia’s life, her only wish is that her son Chris is okay. He is. “I’m not done. He’s not done,” says Sophia. They have an unbreakable bond that helps them both to be A-Okay.

You have a bright future ahead so always use your seat belt on every trip, no matter what.

Make sure you tell everyone in your car to buckle up.

Students are creating a new reality where they know and believe they can change the world with words, debates and ideas.

Over the last 10 years, alums from the program, on average, have higher GPA’s, high school graduation rates, college acceptances and more scholarships than their peers.

As one of the nation’s first, largest and most successful debate programs, the NYC Urban Debate League has grown from a program serving one school, to a program serving 100 schools and over 1000 students.

The program is an all-volunteer network, even the debate judges, tournament staff, debate coaches and teachers. This volunteer model makes it possible to offer free summer debate camps.

Camps offer students the opportunity to participate in lectures, lab sessions, practice debates and speeches, college tours, trips to law firms and a tournament. There is no shortage of fun, as camp balances the learning atmosphere with games, raffles and prizes. This year more than 250 students attended the NYC Urban Debate League camps.

The hours students spend researching, debating and presenting in the debate league prepares them for a seamless transition into college. Statistics reveal, 90% of urban debaters graduate on time and 95% of high school seniors in the program are accepted to college - many of them receiving scholarships. One of the greatest benefits of the program is it gives students an opportunity to make their voices heard.

“I grew up in the South Bronx. I always told myself that no matter what was to happen I would make something of myself and I’ve been on that path of doing just that. I have been doing debate for the past three years. It all started as an extracurricular activity but after winning first place in my first debate tournament, I became interested in the challenges of public speaking. I wanted to see where this could lead me in my future. That is why I love the New York City Urban Debate League. You won’t find any activity that makes you think and question so many ideas; read and research so many books; write and speak about the biggest problems in our world; and meet and compete against students across the nation.

As President Obama stated in his speech to American students in 2009 ‘You may not know you could be a President or Supreme Court justice until you joined your school’s debate team!’

Another one of my role models is Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. She was also a young Hispanic women from the South Bronx who wanted to make more of her life. She joined her school’s debate team, went on to college and law school and became the first Hispanic Justice on the Supreme Court.”

“Due to my involvement in debate the Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) staff took interest in me. I was accepted to Hamilton College via their HEOP program and received a full scholarship.

In the letter they said they were most impressed with my debate achievements and being captain on the debate team! Debate has given me so many skills and knowledge. We learn about things we do not learn in class and we compete against the best in the nation.

I would not be valedictorian of my school if it wasn’t for debate! In college I hope to keep on working to help debaters in the Bronx.”

“I have set myself apart from my peers by overcoming a language and cultural barrier to succeed as a student, a debate team member, and a community leader.

Throughout the course of my life, I have always been drawn to challenges. For example, when I was four years-old and still living in the Dominican Republic, I convinced my mother to take me to a tutoring program in our neighborhood.

The problem was the program was for high school students—not pre-schoolers. I was curious about what the big kids were learning, and I begged my mother until she complied.

When I started school the following month, I was the only kindergartner who already knew how to read and write. That experience was my first introduction to the power of learning and persistence.

Such challenges continue to enrich my academic life and performance. As a debate coach for the New York City Debate League, I am committed to broadening my community’s educational endeavors.

Students learn public speaking and argumentation skills, which they in turn use to compete in debate tournaments throughout New York City. Because we come from a crime-ridden community, it is heartwarming to see these students transform. From individuals predestined to fail because of limited resources, to newly changed enthusiasts with a positive outlet to express their ideas of the world.

Through debates about U.S intervention in the Syrian conflict and U.S.-Chinese Relations, participants learn about social issues including human trafficking, discrimination, poverty and corrupt politics. Perhaps the most gratifying of all is knowing I served as a catalyst creating the new reality these students now inhabit–a reality where they can change the world with words, debates and ideas.

My involvement with the New York City Debate league jump started all of my successes. I have completed 1,780 hours of community service and travelled around the country and the world. I have also been the Scholar of the Year at my school for three consecutive years and will be class Valedictorian.

Additionally, I attend Columbia University’s Class as a Coca Cola Scholar, New York Times Scholar, Ronald McDonald Scholar, Dell Scholar and the most prestigious, Gates Millennium Scholar.

I am looking forward to all of the doors the New York City Urban Debate league will open in my future.”

Truth is, he spends his free time giving back to those who gave so much for us. Dylan is part of a not for profit organization called Hearing Our Heroes. For two years Dylan and his friends have visited the VA hospital to provide lunches, run clothing and food drives, and shovel snow and do yard work.

“There is a future for America with kids likes this,” said Nick Mazella, U.S. Marine Corps Veteran.

Hearing Our Heroes is a group founded in 2011 by high school student Sean Egan.

“For me, giving back to veterans is very important because I feel that after my father, a NYFD captain was killed in the 9/11 attacks, our soldiers reassured us all that everything was going to be o.k," Seth shared.

Seth started the group with no funds but a lot of heart and friends who wanted to help. Each of the 150 members will tell you they have learned to appreciate freedom, liberty and America because of the veterans they met through the program. .

Sean faced an uphill challenge to make his dream of helping veterans come true. In 2013 he received the help he needed when Hearing Our Heroes won a $25,000 grant provided by the State Farm Neighborhood Assist program.

“The goal of the Neighborhood Assist program is to empower communities through the individuals that live there,” said Cooper Kennard, State Farm Youth Advisory Board coordinator. “Through these grants, we’re hoping to help build these incredible projects and allow them to be sustainable for years to come.”

Sean believes that a debt to veterans is something that all Americans have in common, and when we meet and spend time with these men and women, and hear their stories, we understand how huge that debt is.

“Our cause encourages and spurs a sense of patriotism in our members that I am convinced we will hand down to our children," Seth said.

stories,New York,NY,Military,Veterans,memorial day,Veterans Day,Good Neighbors,Neighborhood Assist
