The peak period for storm activity occurs between mid-August and mid-October, as evidenced last year by Hurricanes Helene and Milton impacting numerous states in late September and early October 2024.

In 2024, five major U.S. hurricanes tore across more than a dozen states, leaving trails of destruction from Texas to Michigan. Over 200,000 hurricane related damage claims were filed with State Farm from the 2024 hurricanes and customers have received over $1.9 Billion from State Farm to help them recover and rebuild. The damage wasn’t isolated to coastal communities, with many inland states seeing flooding, wind damage, and widespread power outages. The two significant back-to-back hurricanes Helene and Milton resulted in over 166,000 State Farm claims, primarily in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Florida.

Given the potential for high impact storms this time of year, State Farm is sharing preparation tips during the top active months of hurricane season:

Review your insurance coverage. Make sure you have the right amount and type of insurance for your property and to help protect your loved ones. Surge protectors can help protect appliances and electronic equipment from the surge of electricity caused by lightning strikes.

Add a lightning protection system: a lightning protection system, often including lightning rods and grounding systems, can divert lightning strikes away from the building, reducing the risk of fire or damage.

Unplug electronic devices during a storm and seeking shelter at the lowest point in your home if you are home during a storm.

Lightning remains a costly and unpredictable threat for homeowners. Lightning strikes can cause extensive damage to electrical systems, appliances, and even structural issues. The damage underscores the critical need for homeowners to be aware of the risks, invest in protective measures, and stay prepared, especially in high-risk regions where lightning strikes are most frequent and damaging.

After a lightning storm, homeowners are encouraged to look for these common signs of lightning damage:

Charring — a lightning-strike site is often charred by lightning's intense heat. If you believe your home was struck by lightning, consider inspecting the property for burnt patches and charring.

Damaged electrical switches — similarly, the power surges sometimes caused by lightning can lead to burnt electrical switches.

Roof and wall damage — lightning can damage a roof or wall to the point of causing holes or reducing a home’s structural integrity.

Report lightning damage/claim to insurance as soon as possible to begin repair and recovery process.

Consider taking extra precautions to prep your home if you live in a top lightning state. Knowing and managing the risks associated with lightning can help protect your family and property.

Lightning Safety Tips:

If lightning is common in your area, familiarize yourself with ways to reduce risk before and during a lightning storm. For example:

Go indoors at the first sign of a storm.

Avoid touching electronics or anything with a cord, such as your hair dryer.

Stay away from water sources, including pipes, sinks and showers.

Do not stand or lean on concrete structures. Metal bars inside the concrete can conduct electricity.

Seek shelter in a hard-top vehicle if you're stuck outside. Also avoid sitting inside convertible cars, golf carts and motorcycles.

If swimming or boating when lightning is present, get out of the water and onto dry land.

Do not touch metal surfaces, such as a sliding door.

Avoid touching anything served by gas lines, such as water heaters, ovens, furnaces and fireplaces.

If you're outside and shelter isn't available, crouch down at least 100 feet from tall objects, tuck your head in and cover your ears.

If someone has been struck by lightning, call 911 or your local ambulance service immediately. If you are qualified, give the person first aid. Lightning victims are safe to touch and need medical attention right away.

Invest in lightning protection

Your best bet for stopping lightning damage in its tracks may be a lightning protection system tailored specifically to your home's architecture. Such a system creates a pathway for lightning bolts, guiding them safely into the ground.

Install lightning surge protection devices

Lightning strikes on or near a power line or utility service are a frequent cause of power surges. Point-of-use surge protection devices (SPDs), combined with a good grounding system, should protect your electronic and electrical appliances from most electrical surges. An SPD does not suppress or arrest a surge; it actually diverts the surge to the ground.

Service entrance SPDs provide protection for your entire electrical system and are usually installed at the electrical panel(s) or at the base of the service meter. These devices help prevent the entrance of overvoltages, which can cause a fire. Surge protection devices are typically installed in conjunction with a lightning protection system.

Lightning Insurance

While there isn't a policy for lightning alone, your homeowners, condo, or renters’ policy can help get you get you back on your feet if lightning does strike. You can also contact your insurance agent if you have coverage questions about damage due to lightning.

releases,State Farm,Auto,home,Fire,Safety,policyholders,community involvement,Good Neighbors,Neighborhood of Good,natural disasters,Education,lightning,lightning awareness,Lightning Awareness Week,Innovation,Philanthropy,grants,State Farm Agent,Kids,Good Neighbor

Research shows risks can be lessened when residents invest time in preparing their homes and landscaping to reduce the damage caused by embers during a wildfire. Projects undertaken on Preparedness Day, which can range from a short time commitment up to an entire day, can include:

Raking and removing pine needles and dry leaves within a minimum of three to five feet of a home’s foundation, continuing up to a 30-foot distance around the home, as time permits, and disposing of collected debris in appropriate trash receptacles.

Clearing roofs and gutters of dead leaves, debris, and pine needles that could catch embers.

Collecting downed tree limbs and broken branches and taking them to a disposal site.

Screening or boxing-in areas below patios and decks with wire mesh to prevent debris and combustible materials from accumulating.

“Major wildfire incidents resulting in thousands of destroyed homes continue to occur annually in the U.S. and are quickly becoming the dominant type of fire that causes catastrophic multiple deaths and structure loss,” said Lorraine Carli, NFPA vice president of Outreach and Advocacy. “Homeowners need to understand they have a role to play and that they can take action in reducing wildfire risk. Habitat and State Farm are developing a one-year initiative designed to expose participants to monthly topics including diversity, equity and inclusion; action planning; and more. Local Habitat organizations are also encouraged to leverage received grants to engage younger community members in disaster response programs, youth-led fundraisers, and local advocacy training.

“State Farm has a long-standing history of supporting affordable housing efforts, helping create stability for families and neighborhoods,” said State Farm Director of Corporate Responsibility Ed Woods. “It’s part of our philanthropic mission to build stronger communities, especially during this pandemic where we’ve seen an intensified need for housing security. What we saw was injustice, inequity and inequality facing many communities across the country.

To promote change State Farm is pledging $100 million over five years to support minority communities and issues of racial equity and justice. This is just one part of the insurer’s ongoing efforts to bring about change.

“State Farm has a long history and commitment to social justice,” said Victor Terry, Chief Diversity Officer and Vice President of Public Affairs at State Farm. “Today, we take our latest step in this important journey. Doing nothing is unacceptable. Powerful solutions must be brought to the table, and we need a lot of people at the table, too.”

The $100 million contribution will support a variety of community-focused projects, including small business support, funding for affordable housing programs, and educational advancement programs. Funds will be a combination of charitable contributions and community investments.

“This pledge is truly a continuation of our historical, nearly 100 year-support of organizations that help to meet the most pressing needs of the communities where we live and work,” said Terry.

That near 100-year history has included support for affordable housing and economic empowerment for underprivileged communities across the United States. One such organization is the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC). During the 20-year relationship, State Farm has invested $149 million in LISC’s community development programs. Just this year, State Farm provided LISC $10 million in COVID-19 small business funding for Illinois companies struggling in the wake of a global pandemic.

How did it play in Peoria?

This funding will boost under-invested communities and their residents. One example of its impact is Young’s Popcorn Heaven, a minority, female-owned, gourmet popcorn shop in Peoria, IL. Owners, JoAnn and Greg Young, opened their shop in 2015, and like many new, small businesses, they worked hard to achieve a positive cash flow.

The retired state employee and construction tradesman always dreamt of owning their own business. After saving for years, they finally opened Popcorn Heaven. Then, in 2019, they faced a 50% monthly lease increase and began exploring new locations for their business.

After finding a building and researching different financing options, the Young’s came across LISC. Using State Farm funds, LISC provided a $165,000 loan to purchase and renovate a new building.

“The loan helped me increase my production and sales. My new property is in a more trafficked area, it’s a lot bigger and better for social distancing,” shared Young. “But more importantly, it saved two full-time and five part-time jobs, and decreased our overall expenses. It’s also helping us get through the pandemic, when lots of businesses are closing their doors permanently.”

Equity gaps exacerbated during COVID-19

The pandemic created a lot of difficulty for small businesses; 15% have closed their doors permanently. Minority-owned businesses were hit worse: more than 26% of Black- and 19% of Latino-owned businesses have closed.1

Many American workers lost their jobs or had wages cut significantly as well. Hispanic adults were hit the hardest, 61% of Hispanic adults stating they or someone in their household either lost their job or received less wages – compared to 44% of African Americans and 38% of Whites..2

“State Farm helps people realize their dreams. But when some people don’t have the resources to get on a path toward accomplishing their goals – be it an education, an affordable home, or a chance to start the business of their dreams – we strive to be part of the solution,” said Terry.

Sources: 1-Brookings Institute 2-Accion Opportunity Fund

releases,racial equity,racial justice,stories,equality,Community,social justice,$100 million,LISC,Philanthropy,Small Business,entrepreneurship,loan,grant,Victor Terry,Greg Young,Joann Young,Peoria,Popcorn Heaven,community_feed,company_feed

Early in a disaster, waves of support come in the form of needed supplies and manpower. But after those first waves subside, the need remains.

To assist, State Farm has issued $250,000 in grants to on-the-ground nonprofits across California, Oregon and Washington.

State Farm actively supports charitable programs and volunteerism in communities across the country every day. But the company also sets aside special funding each year to respond to natural disasters and other crises. These extra funds supplement the support of agents and Claims teams in these communities. They help meet ongoing human services needs (food and shelter) and future prevention projects.

And the good neighbor spirit of agents further extends the reach of the company’s on-the-ground charitable arm.

Wildfires today are extremely different and more dangerous than they were in the past.
“Today, more families and business owners are being displaced when a wildfire occurs because of evacuation orders and loss of residences and businesses,” Senior Vice President Annette Martinez said. “This leads to an immediate need for shelter, food, evacuation help and medical assistance. These grants will support those recovery efforts.”

“The West Coast recovery effort will be an enormous task,” Director of Corporate Responsibility Ed Woods said. “The organizations receiving grant support through this relief package are some of the first organizations to respond to the devastation and will continue to provide assistance during the recovery phase.”

In addition to the wildfires on the West Coast, State Farm has provided disaster response grants for the Iowa derecho, Hurricane Laura and Nashville tornadoes.

Louisiana agent spearheads Hurricane Laura donation drive

Laura bore down on Lake Charles, La., last month as a powerful Category 4 hurricane, the strongest to strike the state since 1856. Just before 2AM on the Sawgrass Expressway, a speeding car, traveling the wrong way, crashed into Marisa and Kaitlyn with an impact so forceful, it took both of their lives.

"That day we lost our daughter (Marisa) and our daughter at heart (Kaitlyn)," said Gary. "These beautiful, young souls who brought light and love into the world are gone forever."

"They had bright, promising futures," said Kaitlyn's mom, Christine. "Two smart, strong women whose big dreams were just about to begin."

According to reports, the driver hit the pair head on. Her blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit. "This tragedy was 100 percent preventable,” said Christine. “No one should ever experience the searing heartache all of us feel every day.”

Making a Change:

Within 24 hours of losing their daughters – the Catronios, the Ferrantes and their friends made it their mission to honor the legacies of Marisa and Kaitlyn. Not only in their homes, but on interstates nationwide. “Our highways must be safer. So we got to work - starting with the Sawgrass Expressway,” said Gary.

In the winter of 2013, the Catronio family began researching how to block wrong way drivers from entering the road. It’s the mission of Marisa’s Way, a foundation created to prevent driving errors. “It starts with enhanced signage,” said Gary. “We investigated how to alert drivers before it’s too late. The problem is, with some entrances, you can’t see the wrong way warning. Sometimes the signs are too high, too far back, or too far apart – which means car headlights don’t hit them at the right angle – so they don’t illuminate.”

Finding a Solution:

In 2014, Marisa’s Way launched a pilot project using flashing LED wrong way signs.

“They’re not cheap and can cost up to $2,500,” said Gary. “But a representative of Traffic and Parking Control Products and Solutions (TAPCO) heard our story and sent us one. That generosity helped get the ball rolling.”

The enhanced LED blinking signs don’t rely on car headlights to illuminate. Instead, the high tech, low maintenance flashing bulbs help catch drivers’ attention and can trigger a 9-1-1 call to local authorities.

“In 2014, we took a 36 x 24 LED sign with us when we lobbied for this technology in Tallahassee,” said Gary. “The sign flashed as I addressed lawmakers on the steps of the state capitol. Shortly after that presentation, the state approved these signs for testing in South Florida. I recommended putting them on the Sawgrass Expressway first.” Next stop? The Florida Department of Transportation.

“Our team used a working sign to demonstrate this technology to FDOT,” said Gary. “When we gave the presentation one of the members said, ‘Gary - can you do me a favor? Could you shut that off? The LED is so bright, I can barely see!’”

That eye catching comment confirmed what Gary had wanted. “This vivid signage CAN get people’s attention,” he said.

SEEING the Impact:

One year after Marisa and Kaitlyn were killed, LED-Enhanced Wrong Way Blinker Signs are installed on the Sawgrass Expressway. According to Marisa’s Way, since then, 41 out of 42 cars turned around because the drivers realized they were going the wrong way. “Our mission is to save as many lives as possible, said Christine. “We do this for all people in honor of our angels Marisa and Kaitlyn. May they never be forgotten.”

Through the support of community members, organizations and companies like State Farm® – Marisa’s Way continues to educate people young and old about the importance of safe driving. “We speak from the heart,” said Christine. “We discuss the frequency of wrong way crashes, explain why you never drink and drive, and demonstrate how the safety sign technology is used on roads and highways.”

"We're not done yet," said Gary. “Our hope is to expand this program nationwide. With community support and awareness, Marisa’s Way will continue saving lives. If everyone makes safe driving decisions – the magnitude of this mission will multiply.”

drunk driving,drunk driving awareness,TAPCO,TAPCO signs,safe driving,teen drivers,highway safety,Highway Patrol,traffic report,traffic signs,Police,police patrol,First responders,Marisa's Way,Wrong Way Crashes,Central Florida Expressway Authority,Orlando,Orlando Florida,Coral Springs Florida,Broward County Florida,Marisa Catronio,Kaitlyn Ferrante,Forever 21,the sign,story,stories,Philanthropy,Good Neighbors

“Christmas. Christmas is my favorite holiday,” said Conely. “It’s filled with hope.”

Conely, a social service daycare provider, knows what Christmas and the winter holiday season, means through the eyes of a child. By day she looks after children ranging in age from babies to Pre-K. By night, she raises three kids of her own.

“It keeps me busy,” smiled Conely rocking a baby in her arms, coaxing it to sleep. “I’ve worked in daycare since 2008. I love children. Their imagination, their innocence, their humor…and just like Christmas trees, they really light up this time of year.”

But Conely knows, the holidays aren’t always a happy time for children and families.

Tight budgets, hectic work schedules and bills to pay can make the season of giving anything but jolly.

“I found myself in a tough spot last year,” she explained. “I couldn’t afford to buy my children anything extra. I was working so hard, but could not get ahead financially to buy gifts.”

But hope found Conely during the holidays. It came in the form of an evergreen, from the hands of strangers she’d never met.<img alt="Baby Jakaleib is all smiles! His mother Sharee says the holiday season is one of her favorite times of year. The program sprouted in the fall of 1992 – as a means to fulfill the gift wishes of families in need. Since its inception, the spirit of giving has blossomed and grown.

Each November, evergreen trees adorned with paper ornaments pop up at State Farm facilities. The ornaments contain wish lists from children, families or senior citizens who might otherwise receive no gifts during the holidays. State Farm employees pluck an ornament or two from the trees and go shopping.

Some ornaments contain practical requests like soap, shampoo and socks. Others ask for warmth and comfort – in the form of mittens, hats, blankets and stuffed animals. Either way, employees make sure the items they purchase are suited for the special families they’ve never met.

“Last year, my youngest son, JaKaleib received a teddy bear,” said Conely. “But it wasn’t an ordinary bear. This one sang the ABC’s. JaKaleib loved it. He also received a play table and chair.”

In 2016, State Farm employees granted nearly 1,700 gift wishes for Bloomington, Illinois families. Many also volunteered to pack and prepare the presents for delivery.

“It’s like having the magic of Santa and the North Pole here in town,” said Conely. “This kindness has meant so much to me and my children. After experiencing the good will of others, now my 13 and 10-year-old are inspired to give back. I tell them, ‘You have the power to make a difference. We all do.’”

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Giving Tree. A program that started from an evergreen tree, paper ornaments and a choice: to listen and help. But Conely says it’s not about the packages one receives, nor who the gift giver is that matters…

“The beauty is knowing there are people out there who love and care about others – no matter who they are, or where they come from. That kind of gift lasts long after the holidays are over.”

To help your community this holiday season, check out NeighborhoodofGood.com®.

Holiday,holiday shopping,Thanksgiving,Season's Greetings,Black Friday,cyber Monday,Giving Tuesday,Black Friday Shopping,#GivingTuesday,Catholic Charities,Heartland Head Start,Empowering Families,State Farm,Education,Neighborhood of Good,Children,Santa,Santa Claus,Christmas,Philanthropy,parents,families,toddlers,early childhood educaiton,Christmas Tree,Christmas decorations,Bloomington,Bloomington Illinois,McLean County,story,stories

You don't always know what's 'in the cards.'

Meet Sarah Fitterer. A 28-year-old high school graduate turned dental assistant. Sarah, her husband and their two children live in Newark, Ohio. Her husband is on disability and money is tight. The family lives paycheck to paycheck each month. Sarah isn’t sure if they will ever get ahead financially…

Time out.

Sarah Fitterer isn’t 28-years-old. She’s actually an eighth-grade student from Newark. Turns out, her theoretical life is part of a simulation game called, Reality Store. The rules are simple: choose an adult identity, a level of education and an occupation. Monthly earnings and life/family details (i.e., married, single, kids) are predetermined. In Fitterer's case, with a roll of the dice, she aged 15 years, received her high school diploma, and started a family.

The game, and her life, just got interesting. "This experience gave me a real world view of the struggles people go through," said Fitterer. "Sometimes things happen to us that are out of our control. Knowing how to overcome life challenges is really important."

All eighth-graders in Newark city schools take part in Reality Store. Prior to playing, students complete two classroom lessons focused on financial literacy. “We learned education, occupation and earnings are closely connected,” said Fitterer. “I also learned dropping out of high school can have serious consequences.”

The Objective:

This game and its accompanying lessons are part of A Call to College (ACTC). The non-profit organization helps students pursue a path to higher education.

“The more you learn, the more you earn,” said ACTC Associate Programming Director Shannon Chiacchira. “This small phrase has a big meaning. It helps students understand staying in school can lead to a more comfortable, satisfying and financially secure life.”

Let the Game Begin!

Following their classroom lessons, students transform into adults, and the school gym transforms into the Reality Store. With their newly assumed identities, these “adults in action” visit various life stations. They include:

Living Large: You drive a new car, have a topnotch phone plan and shop at high-end stores.

Modest Middle: You drive a used car, talk on an older smartphone, and shop at budget friendly outlets.

Penny Pincher: You take the bus, have a disposable phone, and shop at thrift stores.

Watch out!

If players run out of money before finishing their simulation, they go back to school! A higher education helps them earn more income and greater purchasing power.

“During the game I bought a house. That was my downfall,” said Fitterer. “I should have rented because I ran out of money toward the end of the experience. So, I went back to school and got my Bachelor’s Degree – that helped!”

Fitterer admits, the Reality Store helped her appreciate the support her parents provide. “I’m one of four children,” she said. “Planning budgets can get really intense!”

The Tassel is Worth the Hassel

Mackenzie Wilkins is an eighth grade teacher in the Newark school district. She agrees with Fitterer - the Reality Store helps students understand the value of saving and investing money.

“After playing the game, they realize their moms and dads pay for a lot,” said Wilkins. “This experience helps them see how much comes out of their parents’ bank accounts – whether that’s childcare, groceries, or insurance. They also understand a college education can really pay off.”

Time to Reflect

At the beginning of the school year, Wilkins asks her students to write a letter, outlining their educational goals.

“Most of the letters I receive have career paths involving college aspirations. I always try to push my students to do their best and work towards those dreams.”

Wilkins knows firsthand the benefit A Call to College can provide. After graduating from her Newark High School, she received a Last Dollar Grant. This coveted scholarship helped pay for her college education.

“Today, I still keep my high school and college graduation pictures on my desk at school,” she smiled. “I also have my graduation caps and diplomas displayed. I believe these visuals help students see they too, can achieve their dreams if they work hard and try their best.”

For Wilkins and Fitterer, a visit to the Reality Store, coupled with a mission to succeed, can help anyone win in the “game of life.”

Good Neighbor Stories,Philanthropy,Financial Literacy,Money Smart,A Call to College,ACTC,Newark Ohio,OH,Ohio,Thrift Store,Thrifty shopper,Spending and saving,financial security,college education,college enrollment,back to school,Scholarships,Last Dollar Grant,money saving mom,money smart week,money management,Education,City,Middle School,shopping skills,State Farm,story,stories

But in recent years, he’s earned another name: Money Smart.

Lewis, of Little Rock, Arkansas spent 25 years in the U.S. Navy, before deciding to serve his country in a new way:

From the classroom.

“I’m a financial education teacher, and I love sharing that knowledge with others,” said Lewis. “The journey began when I enrolled in the Troops to Teachers program.”

Established in the 90’s, Troops to Teachers connects service members to K-12 educational opportunities. Shortly after enrolling, Lewis received an offer to teach in the Mississippi Delta. Bordered by the Mississippi River, the area is known for its culture and comfort food…as well as its struggle with poverty.

“It’s a common problem,” said Lewis. “But we’re fixing it.”

Making the Grade:

In 2013, Lewis began teaching at Coahoma County Junior High School in Clarksdale, Mississippi. There, he learned about the Mississippi Council on Economic Education (MCEE). The non profit organization aims to increase financial literacy in Mississippi by providing opportunities for students and teachers to enhance their money smart skills. It even has an economics competition for students.

“If young people can get financial concepts, then we can change our situation in the Delta,” said Lewis. “We can empower more students to make wise choices when it comes to saving and spending.”

In 2016, Lewis prepped and prepared a team of seventh grade students for the MCEE competition. In the weeks and months leading up to the contest, he helped them understand the purpose of stocks, bonds, saving and investing.

“The lessons really resonated with the students,” Lewis smiled. “In fact, one mother called and asked me what I was teaching her son. She said he came home and wanted to buy stocks. With the help of his grandma, he bought shares for his birthday.”

Return on Investment:

By the time the contest rolled around, Lewis’ team was ready to win…

...and they did.

“It was wonderful, said Lewis. "After all, it’s about applying life lessons. The students succeeded in answering questions about interest rates, national productivity and even current events. This victory has expanded their horizons.”

The student success did not go unnoticed. After returning to the Delta the team received recognition from school leaders, city officials and state legislators. They were also invited to tour the state capital and watch the governor sign the 2017 Proclamation of Financial Literacy Month. On top of it all – each team member was awarded a scholarship for winning the MCEE contest.

“This experience has brought more attention to financial education," said Lewis. “In fact, a baseball player came to me and said he wanted to be like the MCEE competition students. He wanted to take part in the economic contest and, ‘be like those smart kids.’ It’s made teaching a lot easier because they see the value in these lessons.”

The added awareness is now translating into better student grades and new career possibilities. “Teachers like Mr. Lewis are powerful tools against poverty,” said MCEE President Selena Swartzfager. “His commitment to financial literacy and the well-being of his students is making a difference. Great things are to come because of him.”

So what’s next for this hometown hero turned teacher? Lewis says, he’s right where he belongs.

“I feel strongly the best place to be is an educator in the Delta. We have the greatest students and leaders in the state of Mississippi. The next time you think about the Delta you will not think of poverty and great crops…you will think of its great students.”

Mississippi Council on Economic Education,MCEE,Good Neighbor Stories,Philanthropy,stories,story,Coahoma County Junior High School,Financial Literacy,Money Smart,United States,United States Veteran,US Navy,Navy,Marines,Money,Banks,Savings Bonds,Fiscal Responsibility,Patriotism,Patriotic,Macroeconomics,microeconomics,US Census Bureau,Poverty,Mississippi Delta,Interest Rates,National Economy,State Farm

Tracy Spader of the K9 Defender Fund found an answer.

“I started the K9 Defender Fund in 2013 out of admiration and respect for the work done by military, police, search/rescue and fire dogs,” said Spader. “These K9’s and their handlers put their lives on the line each day and need to be protected if something goes wrong.”

As the mother of an Air Force Captain, Spader has a deep passion for working dog teams. She’s even opened her home to two military dogs, Buddy and Jig. “It’s a privilege to support the K9’s who work tirelessly to protect us,” said Spader. “No matter the circumstances, no matter the injuries, they’re determined to get up every day and do it again.”

A Kit Fit for a K9

That’s why, four years ago, Spader created the Buddy Bag. With the help of two veterinarians (one of whom spent time with the military), the bag contains supplies specially selected to meet the needs of injured animals.

What’s the cost for a first responder who wants to buy a bag?

Zero dollars.

“Many departments like police and military have experienced budget setbacks. So, the organization donates Buddy Bags to working dog teams in need,” said Spader. “When we provide the bags, I require every handler to give me a verbal ‘YES.’ That means they will work with their veterinarian so they know how to properly use the items found in the Buddy Bag.”

To date, more than 600 Buddy Bags have been donated to first responders in 43 states and areas where the US military is active. While Spader hasn’t heard from every department – she knows the bags are making a difference.

“In Kentucky, an officer and his K9 partner were assisting with an arrest. While stopping the suspect, the dog was injured. Luckily the officer had a Buddy Bag and was able to give aid to his partner at the scene. The dog has made a full recovery and is now back to work. Since that incident, the police department is committed to promoting the use of Buddy Bags,” said Spader.

State Farm is a financial supporter of Buddy Bag program and its commitment to assist emergency personnel. At a recent State Farm Arson Dog training, teams not only detected the presence of accelerants like lighter fluid and gasoline at fire scenes, they also learned how to use the Buddy Bags.

“Many animals in this line of work risk being burned through the course of an explosion, fire or accident,” said Spader. “Rescuers are taught how to administer oxygen, how to perform first-aid for injuries, administer lifesaving drugs and how to use other Buddy Bag supplies.”

So what’s next for Buddy Bags?

“We’re staying busy,” said Spader. “We want to keep supporting K9 units by providing adequate supplies. We’re continuing to fundraise and educate. After all, I’ve seen the difference these furry spirits can make in a person’s life. We need to ensure while keeping others safe, they stay safe.”

To learn more about the K9 Defender Fund or to donate, click here.

Arson,Arson Dogs,First responders,Police,police safety,police department,U.S. Military,Paws With A Cause,animal fostering,foster pets,Animals,Pet Friendly,K9 Defender Fund,labrador,State Farm,storytelling,stories,Buddy Bags,Firefighters,Fire,Fire Safety,Military Dogs,Good Neighbors,Philanthropy,Donor Relations,Kits for K9's,In Case of Emergency...This Bag Can Help

Forty causes will be awarded a $25,000 grant each to assist their communities. Residents of the United States can submit a cause at www.neighborhoodassist.com from June 7-June 21 or when 2,000 submissions are reached, whichever comes first. Ultimately, voters will decide which community improvement projects win big.

State Farm Neighborhood Assist asks individuals to identify causes that would help make their communities safer, stronger, and smarter.

The State Farm Review Committee will then narrow down the field, using a scoring rubric to identify the top 200 submissions.

The public will have a chance to vote up to 10 times a day, every day for 10 days from August 16-August 25 at www.neighborhoodassist.com for their favorite causes from the list of finalists.

The 40 causes that receive the most votes will each win a $25,000 grant. Winners will be announced on Good Neighbor Day, September 28.

Since the program began, State Farm has awarded $5 million to communities across North America, supporting a wide variety of causes, including:

Fighting childhood hunger

Helping homeless veterans

Revitalizing parks

Improving literacy

Offering athletic programs for children with disabilities

“State Farm has a rich history of giving back to the communities where we live and work, helping make life go right,” said Kellie Clapper, State Farm Assistant Vice President. “From identifying an important cause to rallying your community to vote for it, this program is all about neighbors helping neighbors.”

Last year, 72,000 Americans cast 1.8 Million votes for their favorite causes, selecting winners from small towns and big cities. Established as a national park in 2009, local youth say its natural beauty and rich history are a must-see. Now, they’re combining creativity and technology to bring more foot traffic to the falls. Why did they do it?

First, let’s rewind:

Paterson, New Jersey, located 15 miles from Manhattan has a deep industrial history. In the late 1700’s it received funding from an investment group created by Alexander Hamilton, which helped launch its manufacturing base. Shortly after, Paterson became an economic powerhouse – producing products like railroad locomotives, textile machinery, cotton and silk. By the late 1800’s, it was dubbed the “Silk City” due to its high production of the elegant fabric.

Changing times:

A century later, life in Paterson took a drastic turn. Economic changes and declines in manufacturing led to layoffs and limited opportunities. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) ranked Paterson as the most economically distressed city in America.

While jobs, the economy and opportunities have changed…today, a part of Paterson remains the same. In fact, some say it’s become more beautiful over time…

The Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park

“There’s natural beauty right here in Paterson, said high school senior Jeferson Mendoza. “It gives us something to be proud of.” Mendoza is one of 19 students from the John F. Kennedy STEM Academy working to promote and preserve this national park. With the help of a $96,233.63 grant from State Farm, Jeferson and his peers have been working with the Hamilton Partnership for Paterson to create a free smartphone app encouraging people to visit the area. Known as the Mill Mile audio tour app, it guides participants through a 13-stop walking tour of the grounds. As users explore historical sites, the app shares fun facts, park trivia and includes a quiz to test their Paterson history knowledge. There’s even a virtual tour option for those who can’t visit the park in person.

“This project was all about the students,” said Hamilton Partnership for Paterson Program Director, Robin Gold. “They worked hard to make the tour more appealing to young people.” “We put in countless hours of planning meetings, researching, budgeting, writing content, and more,” added Jeferson. “Some of the work was tedious, but I learned so much. I’m confident this project will have a positive impact on Paterson, which is exciting.”

"Prior to the Mill Mile audio tour app, I had only been to the falls a handful of times. Now I visit more often and I encourage everyone to do the same,” said Jeferson. “Believe it or not, the photos don’t do it justice!”

Word of the Great Falls is spreading. In 2016, the national historical park set a record of more than 177,000 visitors.

“This area is special and the park is a soothing environment,” said Jeferson. It serves as a beacon of hope.”

Good Neighbor Stories,Philanthropy,State Farm,State Farm Insurance,Alexander Hamilton,Paterson New Jersey,Silk City,Industrial,Industrial jobs,Industry,Paterson Great Falls,The Great Falls,Niagara Falls,Broadway,Hamilton the musical,John F. For the first time in his life, he’s going fishing. “I’m learning lots of neat things about the water!” He grinned. “I even learned one full grown oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water a day!” <img alt="A big fish and a big smile!
Gabriel is one of many children setting sail on the Atlantic coast to fish, learn and explore. Not even the Florida sun can compete with the bright smiles on their faces.

"We want to help students reduce their fear and anxiety in respect to activities near the water,” said State Farm Agent Stan Harrison. “And we want them to have fun.”

The chance to sail out of the classroom and into the ocean is part of a program called Academic Anglers. The not-for-profit organization located in Melbourne, Fla., provides hands on boating and fishing experiences to children. An experienced fisherman, Harrison has volunteered with Academic Anglers since 2008. He’s led countless fishing clinics - sharing his passion for marine life and water safety with students.

“It’s a joy to watch them learn,” he said. “Through fishing and boating courses, children are exposed to new ways of thinking and gain more respect for the environment.”

Fish Facts and Ocean Fun

The Saturday class begins at the Marine Discovery Center. There, students learn about aquatic life – including how fish, plants and animals thrive in the water. “Did you know horseshoe crabs have eight legs AND they can flip themselves over with their tails?” Malik Harley beamed. “I also learned an octopus has three hearts and nine brains!”

Later that day, a member of the Coast Guard showed the class how to use professional flotation devices to stay safe in the water. Students also learned how to identify marine life, tie fishing knots using a large hook and rope, and cast a line.

“We want to expand their horizons and attract more children to the outdoor world,” said Academic Anglers Fishing Team President Charlie Roberts. “Seeing students gaining valuable experience outdoors - away from TV, computers and gaming systems is really rewarding.”

Making a Splash

That afternoon, students cast their lines in the water…steered the boat…and the best part? They caught lots of fish – including sea bass, sea grunt and red snapper which can weigh up to 50 pounds and live more than 50 years. The students also learned the importance of catch and release.

“I really enjoyed the fishing clinic with my twin girls, Jade and Jada,” said mother Patrice Smith. “We learned about different types of crabs, stingrays, turtles – and I am so grateful we now know how to fish!”

State Farm is a proud partner of Academic Anglers and its commitment to environmental education. Through the years, the fishing clinics have helped at-risk students stay out of trouble, excel in school and give back to their communities.
Excitement filled the home of Lourdes Verea and Dr. Jorge Verea. Their daughter Rebeka just graduated high school, so the family celebrated with a small gathering at their New Jersey house. That evening, Rebeka and her buddy took a break from the celebration. Like any other night, they hopped in the car to pick up a friend. Little did the Verea’s know, it was the last time they would see their daughter alive.

The Clock Struck Midnight

The Verea’s heard a knock at their front door. It came from two police officers who delivered the devastating news no parent wants to hear. "The driver was speeding through a 35 mph zone with Rebeka in his passenger seat,” said Lourdes. “His car slammed into a turning tractor- trailer. The roof of the car was sheared off, killing Rebeka instantly.”

A Time to Remember

Thousands attended Rebeka’s wake. Seeing so many people who cared for their daughter gave the family hope. The Verea’s realized Rebeka’s life had impacted so many people, and they knew…they must keep sharing her story.

Days after the service, the family formed the Rebeka Verea Foundation.

“We aim to educate teenagers on the dangers of reckless driving,” said Lourdes. “Our slogan is, Say Yes to Life.”

12 Years Later

The Verea’s are still brought to tears when speaking about Rebeka, but they’re determined to remain positive, to celebrate her life and to appreciate the countless ways their daughter touched the lives of others.

Every spring, with the support of State Farm, the Rebeka Verea Foundation hosts two educational symposiums in New Jersey – one for educators and one for students. The symposiums feature diverse speakers such as trauma surgeons, car crash victims and police officers.

Each speaker shares their wisdom and experiences with nearly 1,000 students and 500 educators.

Their mission? To educate.

Their goal? To prevent tragedy and promote safe driving.

While the topics are serious, the Foundation also allows time for a light-hearted celebration. The symposium, held in April (the month of Rebeka’s birthday), is a tribute to her life. The students dance, wave glow-sticks, and sing Happy Birthday to Rebeka.

The Work Continues

To keep raising safe driving awareness, a permanent speed machine is stationed at the crash site. A street near the local high school has been named Rebeka Verea Way and Rebeka’s photo and the Foundation logo is displayed on a city police car.Additionally, the Foundation’s annual gala collects money to support Project Graduation in high schools throughout two counties. The event, held on graduation night, is an alcohol and drug free celebration.

“The Foundation is an integral part of our daily lives,” says Lourdes. “Sadly, my daughter died, but we’re working hard to prevent others from experiencing a similar tragedy. We’re always celebrating my daughter’s life. I feel the Foundation is far-reaching and will live on beyond our lifetime.”

Meet *Silvia, of Houston, Texas. Unable to attend school growing up, she couldn’t read or write. But as the author of her life story, she knew she could master the skills needed to create a brighter chapter for herself and her loved ones.

Silvia visited Literacy Advance of Houston and enrolled in classes. Since the 1960’s, the not-for-profit organization has been helping adults improve their literacy through trained volunteer tutors and programs like basic reading, writing and English.<img alt="Listening, Learning, Writing and Registration.
“I wanted my son to know I am the boss. One day he will be the boss. I want him to go further and do more than I am but for now, I am still the boss,” she smiled. Literacy Advance made the learning process easy for Silvia.
Since beginning her literacy journey, Silvia’s skills have improved. She also started her own hair braiding business. Her newly-acquired ability to read and write allows her to reply to client text messages and answer their questions.
Cassandra Brown isn’t learning about black history from a textbook, a computer or even a classroom lecture. Instead, the 17-year-old is discovering the past through conversations with those who lived it.

“We have never been relaxed in our work”

Ms. Esther Bush is the President and CEO of the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh. She had an opportunity to meet with students, like Cassandra, by taking part in a video called, The Historical and Cultural Literacy Project.

“I love this educational approach for our youth, and was flattered to be interviewed,” said Ms. Bush. “It makes me believe the younger generation is going to learn from our successes, our mistakes and understand how African Americans contributed mightily to the growth and development of America.”

“Imagine your dream. Now go after it.”

The creative video is part of the National Urban League’s, Project Ready Program. It gives students an opportunity to research black history, interview those who contributed to it and record their conversations on camera.

“Through these stories, it’s important for students to realize they too can reach for the stars and achieve anything they put their mind to,” added Bush. “We’ve come a long way – and have never been relaxed in our work.”

The Project Ready video examines the history of African Americans, from the Great Migration (1916-1970) to the civil rights movement, to changing times and new century transitions.

"Black History Month is a time for us to honor the past,” said Brown. “When African Americans decided to migrate – we saw a shift in political beliefs, culture, jobs, even music. It changed American society.”

"No matter race, it’s important to remember where we came from,” added Ms. Bush. “Too often we look at our world today and don’t ask ourselves why it’s this way. Just like the past, we must recognize the choices we make today will leave a legacy for children of the future.”

“One person can make a difference.”

Cassandra says taking part in the video - from researching black history to interviewing leaders - was a great way to harness the power of education in a new way.

“I’m not quite used to being on camera,” she laughed. “But I got comfortable with it. And I really enjoy talking with people who’ve made large achievements. It’s an honor and lets me know I too, can make a difference.”

As she advances her education, Cassandra isn’t losing sight of a lesson that won’t fade with time: Strive to help others.

“I want to pursue a career in healthcare because I want to help people live better lives,” she said proudly. “No matter what, I’ve learned my generation can make positive changes to influence the future. It happens when we come together as a community."

As for the Historical and Cultural Literacy video, Cassie encourages everyone to take a moment to watch, honor and learn. “This video is really important and needs to be shared. Because the changes we make today, influence our future.”

Black History Month,Good Neighbors, stories,Good Neighbors Stories,Philanthropy,Black History,National Urban League,Pittsburgh,Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh,Video,Past,Students,Education,Voices of the Past Share Wisdom for the Future,History. You don’t need a ton of free time to volunteer. You just need a big heart and a willingness to help. And 10 year old Minnesotan Sanya Pirani has those in spades.

When Sanya was just seven years old she watched a YouTube video about the life of children after war. She saw kids her own age without clothes, shoes and other basic necessities. All things she couldn’t imagine living without; things she took for granted. From that point, she felt compelled to help others.

“Sanya wanted a popular doll for a long time, so I gave her a little more than $100 to buy one,” Dilshad, Sanya’s mother, reminisced. Sanya felt uncomfortable buying an expensive doll when millions of children didn’t have enough to eat.

Eight year-old Sanya used the doll money and bought 100 pieces of candy. She sold them for five dollars each, making $500. She donated all the money towards feeding a village of 700 people through Feed My Starving Children (FMSC). “She hoped that by the end of 2017 she could finish feeding the entire village of 700 people for one year” Dilshad continued.

Soon after, Sanya found out from the county commissioner the local Crisis Nursery (an organization that helps parents who are dealing with emergencies such as a sudden illness, housing problems, divorce or separation, or financial strains, may need time to resolve the crisis) needed help.

She channeled her artistic abilities and made bookmarks. She sold them at her mom’s work, school and soccer practice. After two months, she made $500 and donated every last penny to charity.

The young humanitarian soon realized she couldn’t save the world on her own, she needed a team. Sanya‘s teacher and principal allowed her to speak to the entire third grade class. Under Sanya’s leadership, the class ended up raising nearly $2,300 for charity. Sanya herself fundraised more than $24,000.

The following year, she partnered with her strongest supporter yet. Her mother’s State Farm insurance agent. Dilshad was meeting with Erik Westrum when he asked her, “Where do you need us?” It’s the former professional hockey player turned insurance agent’s unofficial motto.

“Erik mentioned his work to fight Parkinson’s disease and asked if I was involved in the community. It’s something he asks all of his customers because he wants to support causes we care about,” shared Dilshad.

“Many of my customers volunteer but I was touched and inspired by Sanya and her family,” Erik said with a big smile. “She is an amazing young girl and I knew I wanted to help her help others.” Erik continues to provide donations to Sanya to help her build upon her efforts.

Sanya, with help from Erik and hundreds like him, is still actively helping the local and global community. The preteen has a close relationship with the local Community Action Partnership (CAP) agency raising more than $5000 for the nonprofit. She also ran a successful food school supply drive with local libraries. Globally, she has raised nearly $27,000 for FMSC and more than $2000 for world church services and Aga Khan Foundation.

Her work has not gone unnoticed. Sanya has won awards from the local CAP, was the only child recognized on National Philanthropic Day, and received a Certificate of Recognition from Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton.

Be like Sanya. Do something, anything – big or small that makes a positive difference in your community. Be grateful for what you have and help those who are less fortunate. Please feel free to visit Sanya’s social pages (see above) to support her so she can continue to help those who need it the most.

It can be scary, no matter your age. Now…imagine if you’re a child. Or the parent of a child who’s sick or injured. Banner Children’s at Diamond Children’s Hospital (DCH) in Tucson, Arizona, understands this. It’s working to turn that concern – into comfort.

DCH offers support through a healing services organization called Integrative Touch for Kids (ITK). ITK helps address the trauma and stress related to hospital stays through healing therapies like massage, meditation, play and music.

And it’s all done free of charge.

These therapies are possible because of ITK’s volunteer program, Hospital Heroes. In this program, Adult Hero volunteers skilled in comfort therapies, support families in crisis. Hero services range from gentle massage, to counseling and moral support. The hospital also welcomes Young Hero volunteers through its doors. The Young Heroes, ages 14-21 are trained in caregiving. They spend time with patients - chatting, playing games and participating in activities.

"Children can feel isolated while in the hospital," said ITK Executive Director, Shay Beider. "Our goal with both Hero programs is to help break down those barriers while helping kids and their families feel comfortable, accepted and safe. This allows patients to experience an emotional escape from the hospital atmosphere."

Play therapy happens weekly in patient rooms or a community space at the hospital. Patient family members can also receive healing therapy in the form of meditation or counseling from ITK Hero therapists.

“All Hero volunteers must complete an orientation to learn techniques for interacting with young patients,” Shay explained. “They also learn person-first language. This is a respectful way to communicate with children who have special needs."

The Heroes program also enhances patient care by promoting emotional well-being, reducing stress, and providing support for families. The DCH staff says it’s an incredible opportunity for volunteers to engage in meaningful service. "I’m so proud of our Hero volunteers,” said Shay. “It's amazing to see their dedication to lifting the spirits of kids. Truly powerful!"

To learn more about ITK, check out the video, A Healing Touch.

“We are so incredibly grateful for the gifts of ITK.
Since 1990, the El Paso Gridley (EPG) High School boys’ basketball team has participated in the State Farm Holiday Classic. The team also takes part in an annual community service activity.

Last year, EPG assistant coach Justin Kissinger asked his players if they’d like to watch the Special Opportunities Available in Recreation (S.O.A.R.) teams play basketball. They quickly agreed. EPG players kept the scorebook, worked the clock and cheered for the S.O.A.R athletes from the bleachers. Afterwards, they showed the team some of their favorite basketball drills.

“Our players’ reaction was incredibly positive,” said Kissinger. “As a coach, I wanted my guys to step out of their comfort zone and really connect with the S.O.A.R. players. It’s a great way for them to realize they can use basketball to reach out and touch the lives of others in a positive manner. It’s not all about wins and losses, or how well you played. It’s about making a difference in your life and helping someone else.”

These two words describe one man simply known as “Knis."

Meet Ron Knisley, an avid sports fan who spent a majority of his career working with the not-for-profit organization, Special Olympics Illinois. Through the years, he encouraged students with special needs to play sports, work as a team and ultimately achieve victory.

But Knis didn’t stop there. He wanted Special Olympics athletes to receive the same athletic opportunities and recognition as teens attending local high schools.

Big dreams and basketball

An annual event known as the State Farm Holiday Classic (SFHC), made Knis’ vision a reality.

Since its founding in 1975, the SFHC has grown into one of the largest, annual, coed high school holiday basketball tournaments in the nation. Each year, (between Christmas and New Year’s Day) it welcomes 64 varsity teams to Bloomington-Normal, Illinois.

In 2002, under Knis’ guidance, the SFHC added a Special Olympics Shootout to its schedule. Played on championship day, the Shootout features basketball teams showcasing their skills while playing the game they love. In its first year, the Shootout started small. Just four local teams took the court. Fans weren’t sure what to expect. As the Shootout began, many left to stretch their legs or visit the concession stand.

But those who stayed witnessed something special…

They saw Knis’ dream come alive as Special Olympics athletes took center court, just like the other students. Basketballs thudded the ground, sneakers squeaked on the hardwood floor, and then came the sound…

The swoosh of the net as a basketball glided through it. Then another, and another. The crowd cheered! In that moment the spectators witnessed Knis’ passion and dedication reflected in the athletes’ joyful faces.

A holiday tradition

Since 2002, the Shootout has grown in popularity and participation. It now takes place in front of a packed house filled with thousands of people.

But today, an important part is missing.

Just three years after the Shootout began, doctors diagnosed Knis with an aggressive form of colon cancer. He fought hard to beat the disease, but treatments were unsuccessful. Knis passed away in 2005. To honor the man who made this Special Olympics Shootout a reality, the tournament was renamed:

The Ron Knisley Memorial Shootout, presented by the State Farm Holiday Classic and Special Opportunities Available in Recreation (S.O.A.R.), is still making an impact today. With the assistance of the local S.O.A.R. program, the shootout has grown into a two-day event featuring 16 teams from multiple states.

But Knis’ legacy doesn’t stop there

In addition to the shootout, the State Farm Holiday Classic awards scholarships to graduating seniors. Money received helps cover their college tuition. Scholarship winners are also invited back to the SFHC to officiate shootout games.

Forming Relationships

Nick Patkunas is a scholarship winner who jumped at the chance to return to the basketball tournament.

“The experience officiating the Shootout is one I’ll never forget," said Patkunas. “I hope future scholarship winners will accept this opportunity.”

For Patkunas, it was also an opportunity to reconnect with Special Olympics athletes - especially a player named Kurt Kinley. “I had already built a wonderful friendship with Kurt through another activity,” Patkunas explained. “His high spirits and energy had me smiling the entire time we were together! He's such a great kid.”

Nearly four decades later, the State Farm Holiday Classic continues to give back – providing ALL athletes the opportunity to play, achieve and be recognized for their accomplishments. After all, that was Knis’ passionately dedicated dream. A dream that became a reality.

Good Neighbors, stories, community involvement,Holiday Classic,Basketball,Special Olympics, college scholarships,Good Neighbor Stories,Philanthropy,Bloomington-Normal,Volunteering,Community,State Farm,State Farm Holiday Classic,College, athletics, sports,One Man. But his change in tone, the way his eyes cast down, says it all.

Gene Gaines is similarly reluctant to revisit more painful times. Before Westside Works, he had to spend occasional nights outside because he didn’t have a home.

Howard and Gene were out of work when they decided to take a leap of faith and apply to the Westside Works program. Both men entered a four-week, intensive training construction program. They learned hands-on skills and received industry certifications.

When you talk to them now, it’s as though they’re on top of the world. And they attribute their change in attitude to the power of Westside Works and their new construction jobs.

<pp:caseid>144305</pp:caseid>

Michael Howard had one mission when he began painting murals twenty years ago; combat the graffiti that had sprung up around his neighborhood near Los Angeles,California. Almost 1,000 murals later, Michael’s mission has evolved into much more than simply painting over unwelcomed graffiti. Today, his mission is to use art as a way to empower youth to improve their communities by creating powerful and impactful murals with a message.

Founded by Michael in 1993, Operation Clean Slate (OCS) works throughout Southern California to provide students with a platform to artistically express themselves while enhancing their community. These messages are thoughtfully designed and are part of vibrantly colored murals placed in schools, community centers and many other locations. OCS’s murals promote topics like safe driving, healthy eating, water conservation and encouraging activity and exercise.

With the support of State Farm, OCS recently completed two new murals encouraging students and their communities to drive safely. The murals are located at Valley High School in Santa Ana, CA and at the Boys and Girls Club of Buena Park, CA.

OCS continues to transform blank walls, creating beautiful murals with powerful messages. They are also expanding their work to broaden the number of people and communities impacted by the murals.

Valley High School, Santa Ana, CA

Valley High School alumni and a current UC Berkeley student, Dulce Lopez designed a recently completed mural at her alma mater, Valley High School in Santa Ana, CA. The design includes the message, “Texting…It Can Wait. Don’t text your life away.”

As students and volunteers painted the mural, a number of people walked by and wondered what was being created. One student even stopped and asked, “Don’t text your life away? What does that mean?” That’s the power of these murals. They have the ability to get people thinking about choices that could positively impact their life.

Boys and Girls Club of Buena Park, CA

At the Boys and Girls Club of Buena Park, CA, students carefully painted a mural at their community center. Inside, the students were being taught about road safety. OCS partnered with Impact Teen Drivers to educate students about making positive choices as they become new drivers. Their mural reads, “It’s not worth the hype to drive and type.”

The mural’s impact extends beyond the education happening inside the center, but rather to the community at large. “Operation Clean Slate’s artwork not only enhances the visual appeal of the structure, but carries a powerful and impactful message.” said California State Senator, Tony Mendoza. “The mural at the Boys and Girls Club of Buena Park will serve as a daily reminder to practice safe driving habits, and will hopefully drive meaningful conversations in the community and among young people that will help improve road safety.”

stories,live,Mural,Graffiti,SoCal,Operation Claen State,State Farm,Philanthropy,Community,CA,California
