According to the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC), there were nearly 59,000 wildfires in the U.S. last year that burned over 7 million acres of land. Currently, 4.5 million U.S. homes are identified as being at high risk of wildfire, making wildfire preparation critical.

According to recent data released by State Farm, the average wildfire paid claim is $224,000, an 8% increase over last year with 95% of those being in California, Oregon, and Colorado. Between April 2021 - March 2022, the highest claims were concentrated in those three states:

California - 65% - $207k average paid claim

Colorado - 24% - $365k average paid claim

Oregon - 6% - $211k average paid claim

The recent wildfire statistics show us that proactive mitigation efforts prior to a fire event are critical before evacuation warnings or orders are issued by the authorities. This is why State Farm reminds residents to be proactive, to adopt mitigation measures in their properties, and to always be prepared for the possibility of an emergency or catastrophe. As the weather becomes hot and dry, this is what you can do to create a defensible space around your property, easily and inexpensively:

Remove dead shrubs, dried grass, fallen branches and dried leaves 5-100 feet around your property.

Keep your roof and gutters clear of debris and remove overhanging branches.

Keep grass and weeds mowed.

Fill five feet around the base of the structure(s) with fire resistant plants or materials, such as gravel.

There’s even more that you can do to prepare on the financial side of things.

Financial action items

Talk to your agent: review together your homeowners insurance policy and discuss your coverage needs to protect your home and its contents in case of wildfire damage.

Understand the deductible: higher deductibles lower your premium, but increase the amount you must pay out of your own pocket if a covered loss occurs.

Understand Market Value vs. Replacement Cost: market value is the amount a buyer would pay for a home, including the land. After all, it wasn’t the best time for visitors. She’d recently been evacuated from her home as a wildfire raged in west-central Colorado. She’d only gotten permission to return to care for the chickens she’d had to leave behind, along with other much-loved possessions.

Luckily, the strangers turned out to be wildfire defense personnel State Farm® hired to protect her home. They turned on and repaired irrigation lines and stayed close to keep an eye on things. They reduced the spread of the wildfire, saved her home and her chickens.

“The customer was in awe,” said State Farm Agent LaVonne Gorsuch. “She said State Farm saved their home. If those men hadn’t been there, the fire would have destroyed it.”

Services that Save

State Farm introduced Wildfire Protection Service in February 2020 for Homeowners (non-renters) in Colorado and Oregon, where approximately 500,600 State Farm policyholders could benefit from the service. The service is added at no additional charge.

During the initial phase of testing, the wildfire response vendor responded to 29 wildfires and visited 1,792 properties, saving over 70 homes from wildfires. No properties were lost once the vendor visited a home identified as being in harm’s way.

Starting April 1, this service will expand to California, Arizona and Washington and include Farm and Ranch customers. These states have seen a significant increase in wildfires in 2020.

This program can give customers peace of mind and help protect property from wildfire peril, offering a new opportunity to be there for our customers when needed most. “We had some fence damage and some smoke damage, but our home is safe,” the Colorado customer said. “Thank you, thank you, thank you... State Farm was there.”

Wildfire Defense Systems Inc. Protects Homes

The Wildfire response vendor makes multiple visits to threatened homes if necessary based on fire conditions. Initially, most visits focus on getting out in front of a fire and scoping what may need to be done should the fire advance on a property. Additional visits are based on fire behavior. Actions taken could include:

Removing combustibles from around the home

Covering up exterior vents with tape

Installing temporary sprinklers, both as a preventative and to raise the humidity around the home

After the fire passes, replacing property that was moved, removing vent covering and equipment

Wildfires,wildfire defense services,chickens,customer,homeowner,insurance,Colorado,story,stories,company_feed

Estimates from these sources should reflect your home's features. When you upgrade or improve your home, you may increase your home's estimated replacement cost.

Be sure to inform your agent about any changes to your home that may impact your insurance coverage needs.

Replacement cost estimates are influenced by supply of labor, demand for labor, and the cost of construction materials. Keeping up with the current market conditions in your area and changing your home insurance coverage amount accordingly, will help you maintain coverage at least equal to 100 percent of the estimated replacement cost coverage for your home.

[TOP]

How long does coverage last for a typical insurance policy?

An insurance policy is a contract. Without them, we couldn’t survive. And our trees-our earth-are at risk. Trees improve our air quality by removing pollution from the atmosphere and giving us clean, fresh air to breathe.

According to the Arbor Day Foundation, more than half of all Americans depend on forest watersheds for drinking water.

The Blaze of Wildfires

Sadly, forest fires and infestation can take away many benefits trees provide to human and environmental health.

As many as 90 percent of wildland fires in the United States are caused by humans, according to the U.S. Department of Interior. Some human-caused fires result from campfires left unattended, the burning of debris, negligently discarded cigarettes and intentional acts of arson. The remaining 10 percent are started by lightning or lava.

Nebraska’s One Million Acre Forest

When you think of Nebraska, football and corn may come to mind. But trees should too. In 2006 and 2012, 50,000 trees were burned in forest fires caused by lightning in the Nebraska National Forest and Grasslands. Burning the Bald Eagle’s and other animal’s habitats. A combined 86,000 acres were burned according to the Arbor Day Foundation. The damage was so bad natural regeneration is not possible, leaving reforestation in human hands.

The Future of Trees

The US Forest Service strives to replicate the natural diversity of trees through its plantings in forests nationwide. Sterling Morton. It is an annual observance celebrating the role of trees in our lives and promotes tree planting and care.

Whether trees provide a backyard swing for your children or a nesting place for diverse habitat, the future of trees is in jeopardy. Without aggressive replanting efforts there will be no seed source to reestablish this unique ecosystem. Replanting trees today will benefit generations to come.

State Farm® is doing their part. The insurance company, in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation, sponsored the replanting of 30,000 trees over the last 3 years.

“Our forests are part of the long and important legacy of the people and the land of our country,” said Matt Harris, Arbor Day Foundation chief executive. “Thanks to State Farm’s commitment, thousands of trees will be planted to help clean the air, protect water resources, and restore habitat and beauty to forests that have suffered devastation.”

Harris hopes others follow in State Farm’s footsteps.

Every year, brush, grass and forest fires burn across the U.S., and more people are living where wildfires are a real risk. It’s not a matter of if it will happen, but when will a community experience a wildfire threat.

To help address this wildfire challenge, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and State Farm are announcing the launch of the project funding awards application period for its’ fifth national Wildfire Community Preparedness Day on Saturday, May 5, 2018, which helps communities prepare for and reduce their risk of wildfire damage.

State Farm is providing funding to NFPA for the Preparedness Day event and a portion will be awarded to 150 neighborhood wildfire risk reduction projects being implemented on Saturday, May 5. Preparedness Day gives people of all ages a chance to plan and participate in a risk reduction or wildfire preparedness activity that makes their community a safer place to live. Project applications can be submitted through March 2. Apply for an award.

During Preparedness Day 2017, more than 400 projects were undertaken in 37 states and 150 recipients received funding from State Farm for activities that helped make residents and firefighters safer when wildfires happen.

According to reports, on average, wildfires burn twice as much land area each year as they did 40 years ago, and the threat continues to increase. In 2017, California saw its largest fire in history, the Thomas Fire, burn over 273,000 acres and claim the lives of two people, including a firefighter. Wildfires once described by “seasons” are now burning earlier and later in the year across the U.S.

"NFPA is pleased to be working with State Farm on our fifth Preparedness Day campaign," said Lorraine Carli, NFPA vice president of Outreach and Advocacy. "For the last four years we have watched participation continue to grow. In 2017 we saw devastating wildfires affect communities across the U.S., but we are encouraged and inspired by the number of residents who feel empowered to take the necessary action with regard to wildfire safety."

“State Farm finds it important to inform and encourage homeowners and communities to adopt effective wildfire mitigation programs that produce stronger, safer homes where lives are saved and a family’s largest investment is better protected,” said Vickie Hodges, Underwriting Analyst.

What is Wildfire Community Preparedness Day?

According to fire science research, individual efforts do make a difference even in the face of a wildfire. Wildfire Community Preparedness Day May 5, 2018, is a national day set aside for residents across the United States to have the opportunity to all take action to complete project work to create communities that are safer from wildfire. It has increased awareness about the importance of wildfire safety and risk reduction projects and motivated participation by residents of all ages, firefighters, and forestry agencies in activities that increase their safety in the event of a wildfire. The purpose of the day is not only to educate and make people aware of their risk of loss to wildfire but also to get them to actively work on a project to reduce their risk of loss.

releases,Wildfires,NFPA,National Fire Prevention Association,Fire Prevention,nobillboard,$500 funding award,National Wildfire Preparedness Day,May 5

A staggering 86%, more than 59,000 wildfires, were caused by people, whether intentional or as a result of human negligence. As the largest property and casualty insurer in the country, State Farm is actively working with organizations like the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) to educate the general public about arson, provide law enforcement with tools necessary to investigate crime, and help communities prepare for wildfires. Prevent Wildfire Arson – Spread the Facts Not the Fire is the theme for 2016 Arson Awareness Week (May 1-7, 2016).

When battling a wildfire, firefighters must utilize a variety of resources at different stages of the fire to ensure the fire is out and the threat is eliminated. Fighting arson is no different and State Farm is committed to helping to provide the necessary resources so that communities are educated and prepared for a fire.

Providing Education and Grants to Help Communities Prepare for Wildfire

For the third year, State Farm is sponsoring National Wildfire Community Preparedness Day (May 7, 2016) with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) by providing $500 grants to 125 projects that reduce wildfire risk, advance general wildfire preparedness, and minimize post-fire impact. The 2016 National Wildfire Community Preparedness Day Recipients are individuals and groups of all ages from 36 states.

Top 5 states for wildfires in 2015

Texas - 9,272 wildland fires that burned 184,418 acres

California - 8,745 wildland fires that burned 893,362 acres

North Carolina - 3,828 wildland fires that burned 15,220 acres

Alabama - 3,198 wildland fires that burned 47,380 acres

Missouri - 3,161 wildland fires that burned 29,893 acres

Training the Best Noses to Sniff Out Arson

As the nation's largest homeowner insurer, State Farm is well aware of the severity and impact of arson on businesses and public safety. To help law enforcement and fire investigators find evidence of arson and serve as a deterrent for future arsonists, State Farm began funding the acquisition and training of accelerant detection canine teams in 1993. Since that time, the State Farm Arson Dog Program has placed more than 360 teams in communities across the United States and Canada. Because canines have a superior ability to discriminate among scents, an accelerant detection canine can investigate a fire efficiently, providing invaluable assistance to investigators when it comes to locating potential evidence of arson.

Donating Vehicles to Police and Fire Departments for Arson Investigations

Many fire departments lack the necessary vehicles to efficiently and effectively investigate fires. This proves to be particularly difficult when departments are in rural jurisdictions. State Farm works with the National Auto Body Council Recycled Rides program to donate vehicles to police and fire departments so arson investigators can safely travel to fire scenes.

Recycled Rides is a community service program in which members of the National Auto Body Council collaborate to repair vehicles donated by insurance, rental car, salvage and auto auction companies to individuals and service organizations. Since 2007, over 1,000 vehicles have been donated by through the Recycled Rides program.

To raise awareness about the problem of arson and improve the ability of police and fire departments to investigate fires in rural and wild land areas, State Farm and Recycled Rides have already or will be donating vehicles to the following departments:

New Bern Fire and Rescue in North Carolina for use by Fire Marshal Danny Hill and K9 Darby. Vehicle repairs and modifications were made by Caliber Collision in Raleigh, NC.

Eastern Sierra Arson Task Force for use by Fire Investigator Jeff Schwing and K9 Remington throughout southeast California. Vehicle repairs and modifications were made by Caliber Collision in Fresno, CA.

Ocala Fire Department in Florida for use by Roseanne Moreland and K9 Gracie. Vehicle repairs and modifications were made by Jenkins Collision Center in Ocala, FL.
