The people of State Farm have served customers with more than 13,700 claims and issued more than $6 billion in payments to families whose homes, cars, and property were damaged or destroyed. And because many claims, repairs, and rebuilds are still underway, we expect total payments could reach $7 billion. Our leadership position in the California homeowners insurance marketplace means State Farm General Insurance Company - the State Farm company that provides homeowners insurance in California - insured more people impacted by this disaster than anyone else.

After the fires, more than 1,000 State Farm employees swiftly deployed to Los Angeles to support customers. Today, more than 200 are still in Los Angeles - away from their own families - working with our customers through the claims process. Los Angeles is also home to more than 500 State Farm independent contractor agents and their teams.


Some were directly impacted by the fires themselves, and they’ve continued to serve customers while supporting recovery in their own communities. By serving others in this manner, these people embody who we are at State Farm, and we appreciate their dedication and hard work. 

In that same spirit, State Farm has given an additional $2 million to various organizations in California like the Red Cross, all helping people affected by the fires. State Farm is also contributing to and working with organizations like Watch Duty to help alert of fires and the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS) to identify and implement more fire resistant building codes and materials. 

There are many forces at work within the California marketplace that are critical to its long-term sustainability. We will continue to work with public and private stakeholders to build a more stable, sustainable insurance market that allows us to match price to risk, so families can find coverage they can count on. Our goal remains to be part of the solution and extend our nearly 100 years of serving the people of California.

One year after the Los Angeles wildfires: State Farm® continues to help

One year ago, wildfires tore through Los Angeles neighborhoods and disrupted thousands of lives. Families across the region lost their homes, their sense of safety, and the routines of everyday life. Rebuilding takes time, and it takes a community. 

Over the past 12 months, we have also seen people show up for each other in powerful ways: neighbors helping neighbors, local organizations stepping in, contractors and volunteers doing the hard, daily work of recovery.

For decades State Farm has been a leader in helping people recover. We have helped people recover from minor inconveniences and large tragedies - from hurricanes to tornados to wildfires. 

We are committed to continuing being a partner with our customers throughout their recovery. We know there isn’t a “quick fix” after a loss like this. Families need time to make decisions and plan their next steps. 

We constantly monitor and measure the claims process and make improvements as we go. And if a customer has questions at any point, our claims teams and local agents are ready to help.
